PRESS RELEASE HBV-003-2013 PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL COMMEMORATES THE 116 th ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARTYDOM OF DR. JOSE RIZAL Los Angeles, 02 January 2013 The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles headed by Consul General Maria Hellen Barber De La Vega observed commemorative events marking the 116 th Anniversary of the martyrdom of the Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal with the theme Rizal 2012: Ehemplo ng Sambayanan sa Tuwid na Daan. Wreath laying ceremony The Philippine Consulate General in cooperation with Dr. Jose P. Rizal Monument Movement (JPRMM) held a wreath laying ceremony on 29 December 2012 at the International Sculpture Garden, City of Carson, California. The event was participated in by the leaders of the various Filipino-American Associations in Southern California. The program included invocation by Ms. Naomi Armada, Founder and Executive Director of the Philippine Heritage Institute International; welcome remarks by Mr. Chito Mandap, chairman of JPRMM; recitation of “Huling Paalam” by Mr. Apollo De Rosas; and, two (2) song performances; singing of patriotic song, entitled “Bayan Ko” by a member of Knights of Rizal, Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles Chapter, Mr. Rudy Fernan and “Wind Beneath My Wings” render ed by minor Kyra De Castro. Officials of the City of Carson, Mayor Jim Dear and Councilmember Mr. Elito Santarina also delivered their brief messages recognizing the event as the acceptance of Filipino culture in mainstream America. Consul General Maria Hellen Barber De La Vega as the keynote speaker of the event highlighted the significance of Dr. Rizal’s legacy to the development of our country under the administration of President Benigno S. Aquino III. In view of the inclement weather, the wreath laying before the life-size monument of Dr. Jose P. Rizal became the last part of the program concluding the commemorative event. Induction of Knights of Rizal, Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles Chapter Consul General Maria Hellen Barber De La Vega, inducted the Officers of the Knights of Rizal (KOR) on 30 December 2012. In attendance too was Sir Tom Rodriguez of the Knights of Rizal of the Philippines. In her remarks, Consul General De La Vega emphasized that KOR officers should remember the legacy and works of Dr. Jose Rizal in carrying out their responsibilities in the organizations. Led the Floral Offering at the bust of Dr. Jose P. Rizal organized by the Filipino- American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) held on 30 December 2012, at the FACLA Community Center in Los Angeles. Attended the Commemoration Program hosted by the Council of Philippine American Organizations (COPAO) of San Diego County, San Diego California also held on 30 December 2012. The program included a presentation of the excerpts from the play “Rizal Atbp” and dance performances by the group “Ang Lahi”.
