OUR VISION

‘what a misfortune the Town is in generall under for want of a Grammar Schoole‛ (Portsmouth Quarter Sessions, 23 October 1717)

In 1732 the dying wish of Dr William Smith, Mayor of Portsmouth and Physician to its Garrison, was that the Dean and Canons of Christ Church, Oxford would use his gift of land to establish a grammar school in Portsmouth. Smith’s own education had taken him from Newport on the Isle of Wight to Leiden University, one of Europe’s leading centres for medical training. Smith returned to a successful career in Portsmouth having experienced for himself the transformative power of learning. In his legacy he wished to make it possible for the city’s children to experience the same excellence in education and to develop a hunger for broader horizons. As the oldest school in the city and, uniquely, a non-denominational Cathedral School, we continue to honour the legacy of our Founder, whilst adapting our values for the twenty first century. Our vision is for The Portsmouth Grammar School to have an outstanding reputation as a school in which young people are inspired to learn and develop the confidence to believe in their ability to make a positive difference to the world. We wish our pupils and our staff to be happy and successful, and in that order. The Main Archway is symbolic of our inclusivity as a school community and of our desire to expand horizons:

‘All experience is an arch wherethrough

Gleams that untravelled world’ Tennyson

In the spirit of our founder, Dr William Smith, we seek to provide excellence in all areas of school life and encourage our girls and boys to think not only about where they will be at 18 but where they aspire to be at 25. Portsmouth is, after all, a city concerned with destinations. Our mission applies both to our pupils and our staff and is to:

Ignite curiosity, imagination and passion for learning Value each individual and to celebrate what they contribute to the school and the wider

community Nurture each individual’s intellectual, spiritual, artistic, sporting and social faculties Develop each individual’s confidence to lead and serve in a changing world Provide foundations for the future, from the Nursery to the Sixth Form, for university and

for life

The Junior School The Portsmouth Grammar Junior School was formed in September 2000 by the amalgamation of the former Lower School and Pre-Prep. Children as young as 7 and 8 years old have been at Portsmouth Grammar School since its earliest days but the Lower School for 8 – 11 year boys was not established as a separate entity until 1927. It was at that point that the older pupils moved into the newly acquired Cambridge barracks. The first separate Lower School supplement in the Portmuthian Magazine appears in December 1929. The Lower School, and more recently the Junior School, has continued to occupy the Victorian School, except for a gap between 1932-1937 when they moved into A and B block of the main School and during World War II when the School was evacuated to Bournemouth. The Pre-Prep for 5-7 year old boys was opened in 1977 with Julia Oakley as its Head. Girls first joined the Pre-Prep in 1990. The newly structured Junior School caters for boys and girls aged 4-11 and the Nursery School which opened in September 2001, takes children from 2 years 6 months. We are always happy to hear from parents about any topic of mutual interest. Parents who wish to make an appointment to see the Headmaster of the Junior School should do so via his PA, Mrs A Stutter. The school seeks to work closely with parents and pupils. If parents or pupils have any concerns in either educational or personal terms, they are most strongly encouraged to share these immediately with the school, contacting the Form Teacher by letter, e-mail or telephone in the first instance. The Form Teacher will, if appropriate, involve a Senior Teacher or the Deputy Head, and finally the Headmaster of the Junior School. Should this sequential chain of referral not deal fully with the concern, parents may contact the Chairman of the Governors via the Clerk to the Governors, Mr D J Kent, who is also the school Bursar. We would much rather be bothered unnecessarily than contacted when it is too late. So if in doubt, do contact us. The School Doctors, Dr C Foley, Dr Marcus Saunders and Dr A Scott-Brown, may be contacted via the School Nurse, Sister Deborah Wright, who may be found during School hours in the Medical Centre. The school’s Director of Counselling is Mr Mike Clarke, [email protected] (01983 883 858). Mr Ashcroft is the Designated Officer for Safeguarding Children and oversees all child protection issues in The Junior School.
