PETER meets JESUS

John the Baptist said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning round, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"  "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.  The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called… Peter "

PETER is amazed & convicted

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding round him and listening to the word of God, he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."  When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said,

"Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Peter is impetuous & courageousDuring the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to

them, walking on the lake.  When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost,"

they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them:

"Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."  "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came towards Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,

beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.

"You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"  And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.

Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." Matthew 14:25-33

Peter is willing to die for Jesus

Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."Peter asked,

"Lord, why can't I follow you now?

I will lay down my life for you." Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the cock crows, you will disown me

three times!John 13:36-38

God reveals Jesus’ true identity to Peter

"Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied "Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; and still others, …one of the prophets."  "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."  Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earthwill be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth

will be loosed in heaven."  Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the

Christ.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.   Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

"Never, Lord! This shall never happen to you!"

Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

“We were eyewitnesses of His Majesty”

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.   There he was transfigured before them.

His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.   Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here.

If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.“

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a Voice from the cloud said

"This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."

When they looked up, they saw no-one except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them,

"Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Matthew 17:1-9

Peter denies Jesus

Then seizing Jesus, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.  But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him:

"Before the cock crows today, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly. Luke 22:54-62

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,  as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.Peter… bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

"Don't be alarmed," the Angel said.

"You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has

risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.

But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you

will see him, just as he told you.' “Mark 16:6-7

Peter meets the Risen JesusAfterwards Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of

Tiberias. It happened this way:

"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but

the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus.  He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they

answered. He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net

in because of the large number of fish. Then John said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Peter heard

him say, "It is the Lord," he … jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat.

Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught."  Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full

of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.  Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the

disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?"They knew it was the Lord.

Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

Peter is Restored and Recommissioned

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?"

"Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?"He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things;

you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. "  I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself

and went where you wanted;but when you are old you will stretch out your hands,

and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.

Then he said to him, "Follow me!"
