Mission of the Week If a family member or a friend of mine is hurt,

I will stop playing to help them.

Sharing the Gospel John 12:12-16 Everyone in Jerusalem heard Jesus teach, and saw him heal the

sick. They followed him wherever he went. They cheered when-

ever they saw him. When he arrived in town on a donkey, they

shaded him from the hot sun with palm leaves. Imagine what

kind of parade you and your friends would have for Jesus if he

came to teach in your class or came to visit your town.

Liturgical Whiplash

One of my seminary professors told us, “The Roman Rite is de-

signed for people who pray every day.” After we had stared at him in

confusion for a while, he went on to explain: The very amount of repeti-

tion from day to day and Sunday to Sunday and year to year allows the

liturgy to seep into us and slowly work on our souls. For instance, we

sing the Sanctus every Sunday at Mass, and most of the time it passes us

by. But once in a while, the thought may strike us: “Wow! So this is

what the blessed in heaven sing every day!”

In the same way, as we go through the solemn ceremonies of Ho-

ly Week this year, we never know which part of which day’s ceremonies

will speak to us and lift up our hearts and minds to God? Will it be bear-

ing our palm and singing in the Palm Sunday procession? or shouting

“Crucify him!” with the mob? Will it be when Jesus washes the feet of

his disciples on Thursday? or when we leave in silence after Jesus has

been taken away to the altar of repose? Will it be when we kiss the feet

of the Crucified on Friday? or when we sing the first Alleluia on Satur-

day? It is all part of letting God speak to us through the liturgy. We do

not know until it happens, until some aspect of the liturgy enters our

hearts and draws us to God.

“Could you not watch one hour with me?”

After the Mass on Maundy Thursday, the Blessed Sacrament will

be taken in procession to the altar of repose, which will be set up in the

work sacristy on the Gospel side. There will be seats and kneelers, as

well as a selection of prayer books for you to borrow and return. It is a

pious custom to visit the altar of repose for an hour, in commemoration of

Christ’s agony in the garden. Adoration will continue after Mass until

midnight. Many people try to visit the repository in many churches on

this night.

In other news, the Feast of the Annunciation, which ordinarily

takes place today, is transferred this year to Monday, April 9. The days

of Holy Week and Easter Week are such important days on the Church’s

calendar that they admit of no other celebration than that of Our Lord’s

Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Our Lady’s Annunciation is one of the

few feasts on the Calendar that is so important that it is transferred to the

next available day (rather than being skipped) when it comes into conflict

with a feast of greater dignity.

Also, please see elsewhere in the bulletin for the complete Holy

Week schedule. This will include expanded confession times on

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Also, on Saturday morning

we will have the traditional Blessing of Easter Food. This most espe-

cially includes lambs, eggs, bread, and new fruits, but you are welcome to

bring other foods or the makings of your whole Easter dinner to be

blessed.
