Here at Volume One, we love our pets. They’re just another part of the family: furry little friends that need love and care just like we do. So we put together this section as a way to highlight some ways local people’s pet enthusiasm has taken hold and some tips

for proper pet care. Having a pet is a lot of work, but it’s so worth it every time your pup greets you at the door or your cat curls up on your lap in front of the TV. Pets can make families complete, so without further ado, here’s our Pet Project.

BELLA AND TEDDY, TWO LITTLE WHITE FIDO FURBALLS OF FUN, and their own-ers have experienced firsthand the ben-efits of pet therapy – for patient, pet, and volunteer – at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. More pets and volunteers are needed now that Mayo’s Paws Force program is expanding to Mayo’s Barron, Bloomer, Menomonie, and Osseo locations.

“Health concerns can be stressful, and pet therapy visits make a world of difference for many of our patients and even our staff,” says Vicky Zehms, director of volunteer services. “These wonderful dogs and their handlers also make house calls through hospice.”

Bella, a six-year-old Havanese, and her owner Cassie Meinholz, a high school math teacher in the Fall Creek School District, volunteered during the summers of 2012 and 2013, before the birth of her son Hudson in 2014.

“When my husband Kevin and I first got Bella, pet therapy wasn’t even on our radar,” she says. “We trained with her at Rude Dog U, where her tempera-ment and skills caught the eye of the owner, who thought she would be great because none of the dogs on Mayo’s team at that time were small – most were golden retrievers and Labradors – and few could do tricks.”

Bella passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen exam and hospital-setting sim-ulation tests with flying colors. And Cassie successfully completed the spe-cial volunteer and dog-handling train-ing.

“Bella loved doing pet therapy. For two solid hours, she was the cen-ter of attention,” Cassie continues. “Apparently, it was very tiring for her as well because afterwards, she would sleep the entire afternoon.”

“We visited Pediatrics several times, and kids would unintentionally tug on her while petting her, and she took it calmly,” shares Cassie. “She was a good dog before pet therapy, and the patience she exhibited during her time in the program has carried over to her interactions with our son.”

Terri Gardow, athletic assistant at North High School and mom to three teenaged boys, and Teddy, her two-year-old bichon frise and Shih Tzu mix, completed obedience classes at Anne Braue’s Canine Training Center. Terri and Teddy together earned certifica-tion last fall through Pet Partners, the

national therapy animal program that trains and screens volunteers and their pets. The program was established to ensure that “both ends of the leash” – people as well as animals – are well-prepared for any setting.

Terri first became aware of pet therapy when accompanying her moth-er for chemotherapy for brain cancer

at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, where “having a dog there just took our minds off the situation.”

Their first ever pet therapy visit was the most memorable. “Teddy and I were walking in the hallway, and sud-denly Teddy veered towards a patient’s room,” she recalls. After she explained and asked for permission to enter, they

came upon a patient near death sur-rounded by family. “One family member shared that the patient loved dogs, and (asked if) could Teddy be placed on the bed next to him. Teddy immediately snuggled near one of his hands, and while the family was reminiscing about his pet dogs, I noticed a tear falling from one of the patient’s eyes.”

WHEN PET OWNERS NEED TO GET SHOTS OR OTHER MEDICAL TREATMENTS FOR FIDO OR FLUFFY, their options are usu-ally limited to squeezing angry, anxious furballs into carriers and listening to them howl and yowl all the way to the veterinary office and back. The experi-ence can be unpleasant for animals and humans alike. But what if – like the fabled M.D.s of old – small-animal vets made house calls?

One local veterinary business does just that. If you live within a 40-mile radius of Chippewa Falls, Voyaging Vet and Tech Services will come to your door to treat your dog or cat. The business is the brainchild of Patrice Anderson, who got the idea when she began attending Eau Claire’s Globe University in 2008 to become a certified veterinary technician.

“Can you come over and look at this? What do you think about this?” friends with pets would ask her when they learned she was studying to be a vet tech. These pet owners’ desire to have someone listen to them and give their critters personalized attention piqued Anderson’s interest. She graduated from Globe in December 2011, studied for and passed her board exams, and opened the business in June 2012.

Meanwhile, one of Anderson’s former instructors, Dr. Erin Weiss, learned of her business plans and came aboard, put-ting the “vet” in Voyaging Vet and Tech.

“It’s not like we reinvented the wheel. Lots of bigger cities have mobile practices,” explains Anderson, although she notes the closest such practice other than hers is based in La Crosse. “What we do is offer a much more personalized service, and from the conversations I had with a lot of people I decided there was a calling for that.”

Although they have no physical location – just a paw-emblazoned van – Voyaging Vet and Tech offers most of the same services as a traditional brick-

and-mortar vet clinic, including wellness exams, vaccinations, internal medicine tests, and end-of-life care. However, they aren’t equipped to do surgical proce-dures (including spaying and neutering) or to treat immediate emergencies.

So what’s the advantage of a vet service that makes house calls? Convenience, for one thing, Anderson says. “Everybody’s so busy,” she says. “So many people have multiple pets.” For many customers, hav-ing veterinary care come to them makes life less complicated.

Furthermore, a traveling vet ser-vice means less stress for the animals. Anderson notes that vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure can spike when anxious animals go to a veterinary clinic. By contrast, animals are calmer – and their readings are more accurate – when they are in their home environ-ment.

Amy Mewhorter of Chippewa Falls appreciates both of these aspects of being a client of Voyaging Vet and Tech. “They’re in their home setting,” she says of the animal patients, including her German shorthair pointer, Molly. “They

think it’s a friend coming in. There’s not that sterile smell of the clinic. They don’t have to get up on the metal table.”

Anderson says she’s pleased to be able to bring personalized service to her human and animal clients. “I just enjoy working with the public, and the part that I love the most about it is watching

the animal-human bond every day,” she says. “ Yes, these are people’s pets to put it simply, but they are children, they are family.”

VOLUME ONE: From your perspec-tive, what’s appealing about rabbits as pets? JENNIFER HOFFMAN: They are very comforting to me. I love their tiny twitching noses and their beautiful soft fur, their crazy jumps and twists, their high-speed running around furniture. It’s so great when you get home and they are there waiting for you – waking up from their daylong nap to get some pets. To see their eyes light up with excite-ment when they know they’re going to get a treat. They hear the rustle sounds of a bag of kale opening or the snap of a carrot.

Rabbits have an amazing sense of smell – sometimes just opening a bag of raisins or apricots brings them running. Eating a banana gets them so excited that the fur on their backside twitches. They find joy in the basic things in life. Pets, treats, playing. They don’t ask for anything besides the basics and they give me everything in return. It’s very rewarding to me when I see them binky in the backyard, because I know they are unabashedly happy, they are in their element.

What kinds of rabbits make the best pets?

There are different breeds that have different temperaments. There are some that are more nervous, some that are more relaxed. I think mostly if you are looking at getting a rabbit, you need to spend some time with them before-hand. When going through a shelter or rabbit rescue, usually they can pair you up with a good match. They know the rabbit’s personality.

Larger rabbits that are heavier make better candidates for children. Rabbits in general are pretty delicate. They

need to be picked up, held, and put down in a certain way. They have a ten-dency to want to jump out of your arms if you are not careful, and they have very powerful legs that kick out and can scratch you.

How does rabbit ownership com-pare with owning another kind of pet?

Rabbits are of course quieter than dogs or cats. They do make noises, how-ever: They even purr when content. Like all pets they require cleaning up after. They require grooming and nail clipping. They do require a space where they can stretch their legs and hop around daily. During the day they usual-ly nap and groom themselves. It’s ideal if you can have two bunnies that keep each other company while you are away.

Do you have any particularly amus-ing rabbit stories you’d like to share?

I had a rabbit who was name was Lil’ Dickens for a reason. She was so small she would get into everything! She would hide under the bed, where I couldn’t get her. All I would hear is the rustling around. She would “bark” at me when she was upset, which sounds like a grunting noise. She was ador-able; this tiny little girl with so much personality! I miss her greatly; she was with me from 2005 to 2015. I’m not sure how old she was when adopted, but she lived to a grand old age for a rabbit. She would beg for treats on her hind legs and walk backwards. She would go abso-lutely insane for apricots, almonds, and bananas, even running in circles she was so excited. She was so well-trained she would wake up from her nap and be on her hind legs in seconds, begging for treats.

JENNIFER HOFFMAN HAS BEEN IN LOVE WITH RABBITS ever since she got one as a pet while stationed in Hawaii with the Army 17 years ago. Seeking a small household companion that wasn’t a cat (she’s allergic), she found a bunny in a pet store. “It was love at first sight,” she explains. Her first rabbit, was a high-energy Netherland dwarf she named Thrasher who loved to do what bunny aficionados call “binkys,” which she describes as “high jumps while kicking out their legs and sometimes flipping mid-air.” These days, she and her two rabbits, Reggie and Lil’ Girl, are frequent participants in Hoppy Time, a bunny gathering at emBARK, a dog daycare in Eau Claire. Hoffman talked to Volume One about what happens in a roomful of rabbits and what you should know before adopting one as a pet.

Dog owners have dog parks and doggie day cares to allow their pets to socialize. How do rabbits (and their owners) socialize?

Over a year ago, I was at the Eau Claire County Humane Association help-ing a friend adopt two bunnies, and there was a flier posted about a bunny group called Hoppy Time, a playtime for local house rabbits. I was so excited! I took my babies to the first one. At first I was hesitant, because I know how territorial rabbits can be. They like to mark their territory and “chin” the items in their home. They have scent glands under their chin.

But it turns out that when there are three or more rabbits in a neutral space there is no fighting, since there is no one specific’s rabbit scent there. It’s foreign turf. It was such a joy to see all kinds of different rabbits playing together, and better yet to meet other bunny lovers!

What do rabbits do when they hang out together?

They check each other out by smell. They tend to want to show off in front of each other by jumping and zooming around. They are constant hay eaters so sometimes they just chill in a litter box, eating hay. Their ears are always on alert, listening.

At Hoppy Time the rabbits’ humans get a chance to talk about different top-ics, swap ideas on rabbit DIY toys and treats, litter training, neutering, vets, food, and treats. It’s a great place to go with great people who absolutely love their pet rabbits.

What advice would you offer some-one who’s considering getting a rab-bit as a pet?

Do your research! Know what you are getting into. Rabbits require a con-

siderable amount of care, time, and money. Really think it through for the long term. There are a ton of informative sites online such as rabbit.org that pro-vide a lot of information. Plan for owning your rabbit for the next 10 years. Spend some time with them before you make the decision to adopt. I recommend look-ing on petfinder.com. They list all the rescue organizations and shelters where bunnies are available. Often, rabbits that are adopted will already be altered. What’s nice about adopting from a shel-ter or rabbit rescue is they usually know the animal, they know its temperament.

Bunnies love to chew. If you don’t provide them with things to chew on, they will take it out on your furniture, carpet, etc. Bunny-proof your house, putting away cords, putting up books, covering exposed wires. They love to hide under things. If you don’t want them there, you need to block the area.

Bottom line: Adopting an animal is for keeps. You can’t take your children back to the store, why would you do that to an animal? Know what you are get-ting into and the time and commitment that is involved. And of course spay and neuter! Altered bunnies make better companions and will live longer and healthier lives.

If you have to describe rabbits in three words, what would they be?

Unique. Soft. Adorable.
