On April 14th the Physician Assistant Class of 2013 participated in the Walk for the

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The PA walk team raised $1,256.00 for NAMI Gulf Coast and had a blast walking and interacting with Mental Health professionals from the area. Thanks to everyone at UTMB who supported us in our

fundraising endeavors! We appreciate your support of our efforts to raise awareness about Mental Illness and provide financial resources to NAMI Gulf Coast to help families affected by Mental Illness.

What is your title? My title is Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy, SHP. UPDATE: The editor had no idea that during the assembly of this newsletter that Patricia Fingerhut would be appointed as the new Chair of the Occupational Therapy Department starting September 1st! This was great timing to spotlight Dr. Fingerhut!

CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES! Where is your hometown and tell us a little about your personal life? I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada which is the 2nd province from the west, just north of Montana. It is truly the land of the ice, snow and midnight sun though the summers (June-August) are gorgeous. My husband, children and I moved here in 1998. I have three grown children, a boy and 2 girls, the oldest two being married. No grandchildren yet but I get my baby fix on Thursdays when I practice with early childhood intervention. We have a delightful border collie mix dog, and my hobbies are reading and gardening. What do you like best about UTMB Galveston, SHP and OT? The best part of UTMB, SHP, and the MOT program are the people. I truly enjoy my colleagues and the students. Their enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in to get the job done makes coming to work fun every day.

THERAPY CLINICS INTERNATIONAL

Physical Therapy Students Spend 6 Weeks Working in Guatemala

This year, we again had the opportunity to partner with the University of Texas Medical Branch, in which we provide a six-week clinical rotation site for their physical therapy (PT) students, and their students get to experience, first hand, the joys and challenges of providing rehabilitation services in a developing nation.

During the six weeks, the students participated in a medical outreach in a local village, worked in our adult and pediatric therapy clinics at ASELSI, evaluated patients for our wheelchair giveaway, performed house visits, observed a surgery at a local hospital and much more. Through these experiences the students gained valuable critical thinking skills, an appreciation for cultural differences, a greater understanding of Spanish and some K’iche phrases, and lasting experiences and friendships. The students

described their time as a “great experience.” They loved being able to practice a variety of physical therapy skills, having the opportunity to work in and experience a different culture, seeing how people live and work, learning from and teaching our local workers, and learning about the medical system in Guatemala. They also enjoyed the variety of experiences they had living with local families, such as learning to cook local foods, singing local songs, and visiting local sites. Through it all, the students were changed, and the local people were as well, thanks to their open hearts and willingness to serve our workers, our patients, and our community.

Seven years ago our therapy program ran on Tuesday mornings, serving seven children. Over the years we have grown. Currently, we have therapy all day Tuesday and Friday and treat forty-eight children. Currently, we have more children waiting

to be evaluated and admitted into the program, but we do not have the space. We need to hire more workers to serve these children. Can you help? Tax-deductible gifts can continue to be made online or at CTEN, PO Box 291307, Kerrville, TX 78029-13027.

Third year Physical Therapy Students Lisa Osborn (left) and Sharon Hasemann (right) show off their “farewell gifts” from the staff at ASELSI in Chichicastenanga, Guatemala. Lisa and Sharon participated in Global Health electives that helped in preparing them for this 6-week international clinical rotation. They were immersed in the language, culture, and health care system in this country. The staff at ASESLI were appreciative of all that the students brought to the clinic through their physical therapy skills and genuine interest in contributing to the needs of the patients that they served while at ASELSI. Both students felt that the 6-week clinical experience in Guatemala was extremely valuable to their professional development as well as their understanding of the PT role in this global health experience.

TSRC Annual Conference in Austin

On May 24th and 25th, 2012 twelve juniors from the Respiratory Class of 2013 attended the Annual Texas Society for Respiratory Care Conference held in Austin at the Renaissance Hotel. The conference was filled with information about new treatments and information about the future of Respiratory Care. In addition to the lectures over the course of two days, there was a hall of vendors showcasing the new technologies that are available. The vendors and lectures provided new insight and invaluable information. Four RC students represented UTMB in a quiz bowl competition where they won several rounds before being eliminated before the quarter finals.
