Personal Astrology Lesson 1

Introducing Astrology

Planets, Signs and Houses

An astrological horoscope is like a map of thesky for your instant of birth, looking from theviewpoint of your birthplace. Your moment ofbirth gives a "freeze frame"--an exact snapshotof the positions of all the planets (which takefrom 88 days [Mercury] to 250 years [Pluto] tocircle around the Sun). No one else has thesame horoscope as you--unless they were bornin the exact same place, at the exact sameminute, as you were.

Your "sky map" (horoscope) places planets inany of 12 signs and any of 12 houses. Theplanets also have angular relationships with oneanother (such as 90 degrees apart, 120 degreesapart, etc.) which are called aspects. As wediscuss the meanings of these factors, you donot need to memorize words or phrases. Wewill be interpreting the placements in yourhoroscope from several different viewpoints andeach one will shed new light on the topic. Simp-ly stay open to your impressions as theselessons proceed, and you will discover you haveabsorbed the basic essences of astrology’s fourbuilding blocks: planets, houses, signs andaspects.

Your day of birth determines the sign of thezodiac occupied by the Sun. That is your "Sunsign" which many popular columns abbreviate tojust "your sign." The zodiac is like a ring out inspace which has 12 sections--the signs. Welook out from Earth and see the Sun in front of aparticular section, or sign, of the zodiac on aparticular day of the year. Because the Earthalways takes 365-1/4 days to go around theSun, we "see" the Sun in front of the same signof the zodiac at about the same day of eachyear. The Sun is always "in" (in front of, fromour point of view) the sign of Aries on March 24,no matter what year it is. However, the Sunenters the sign of Aries on March 20 someyears, and on March 21 other years. Similarly, the Sun moves from Gemini to Cancer either

June 21 or June 22. People born near a timewhen the Sun is about to change signs mayneed to supply their year and time of birth inorder to determine which s ign thei r Sunoccupies.

The other planets, however, go around theSun either faster (Venus and Mercury) or moreslowly (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptuneand Pluto) than Earth does. Therefore, theirpositions in the signs of the zodiac do not matchthe yearly order of the Sun. We need to knowboth your year of birth and your day of birth todiscover which zodiac signs are occupied by theother planets. (The Earth does not occupy asign because everything is calculated from theviewpoint of where you were born on Earth.)

Your Sun ( ) is in the sign of Sagittarius ( ).Your Mercury ( ) is in the sign of Sagittarius( ).Your Venus ( ) is in the sign of Scorpio ( ).Your Mars ( ) is in the sign of Leo ( ).Your Jupiter ( ) is in the sign of Libra ( ).Your Saturn ( ) is in the sign of Cancer ( ! ).Your Uranus ( " ) is in the sign of Gemini ( # ).Your Neptune ( $ ) is in the sign of Libra ( ).Your Pluto ( % ) is in the sign of Leo ( ).

Think of each of the planets as representinga drive or need within you. For example, theSun represents our need to shine, our need forrecognition, our self-esteem and pride/shameissues, as well as vitality, life force and creativ-ity. Mercury represents our need to communi-cate; Venus our need to enjoy the physical worldand the world of relationships; Mars our need toassert ourselves; Jupiter our need to believe andto aspire; Saturn our need to structure life andtest reality; Uranus our need to change andalter; Neptune our need to merge and seektranscendence; and Pluto our need to relateintimately with another person and with our ownpsyche.

The signs modify the planets, like adverbsmodify verbs in English. You express the drivesymbolized by the planet in a manner describedby the s ign i t occupies. Here are a fewkeywords for the signs. We’ll be giving moredetails later as well, so don’t feel you have to

You can mix and match to get several possi-bilities just from this brief introduction to planets

and signs. Remember, that the symbols ofastrology work on many levels. Everything hasmore than one meaning, so be open to multiplepossibilities as you think of combining these listsin different ways. Also note that most potentialshave both an "up" side and a "down" side--apositive and a negative. Astrology simplymirrors our potentials. We have the power tomanifest either side in our lives (and we canalways change from one to the other if wechoose). Let’s take a quick look at some of thepossibilities implied by the sign your Sun is in.

in life.

We have not exhausted the meanings of yourSun, but will do more with it later. We suggestthat, sometime before the next lesson, you takea few moments to mix and match the above keyphrases for your other planets and signs. Thinkabout the potential positive options as well asthe possible negative options for each combina-tion, and recall that each sign placement isfurther modif ied by the house the planetoccupies and by aspects formed to otherplanets. Even if people share the same place-ments by signs their personalities may be quitedifferent. The four building blocks of astrology(planets, houses, signs and aspects) intermixand intermingle in a unique fashion for eachperson.

______

Your time of birth may be needed to knowyour Moon sign, because the Moon changessigns about every 2-1/2 days. Also, if you wereborn on a day when the Sun or a planet waschanging signs (near a boundary point of thezodiacal circle), you will need to know your timeof birth to know which sign that planet is in. (Forconvenience, astrologers call the Sun and Moon"planets" even though the Sun is a star and theMoon is a satellite.)

Your time of birth also identifies whichhouses are occupied by the planets. Housesare a division of space based on the Earth’s 24-hour rotation. The Earth turns completely on itsaxis in one 24-hour period (creating our day andnight). The space within which we turn isdivided into 12 areas called houses. As we lookout from your place of birth, at your moment ofbirth, the planets will be in the area of spacedesignated as one or another of the 12 astrologi-cal houses. Houses are shown as wedges (likepieces of pie) in a circular horoscope.

Your Moon ( ) is in the sign of Virgo ( ).

Your Sun ( ) is in the 1st house.Your Moon ( ) is in the 11th house.Your Mercury ( ) is in the 2nd house.Your Venus ( ) is in the 1st house.

Your Mars ( ) is in the 9th house.Your Jupiter ( ) is in the 12th house.Your Saturn ( ) is in the 9th house.Your Uranus ( " ) is in the 8th house.Your Neptune ( $ ) is in the 11th house.Your Pluto ( % ) is in the 9th house.

Houses represent inner drives and needs, but houses have other meanings too. Theyrepresent certain areas of life, and other peoplein our lives, as well as inner psychologicalissues. Thus, for example, the 3rd houserepresents communication issues, our capacityto learn, and also symbolizes the people we firstpractice learning and communicating with:brothers, sisters, neighbors and people near-at-hand. Following are very brief descriptions forthe houses. You need not memorize these. Wewill be returning to the topic later. As you readover the list, notice that certain common threadsare associated with a planet, a sign and ahouse. This shared symbolism is one of theways astrology makes i t easy to spot therepeated (and most significant) themes in achart. For example, you can see that Mercury,Gemini, and the 3rd house share a commonthread revolving around communication. We willdiscuss these common themes more in Lesson3.

1st house: personal action, identity, self-expres-sion, spontaneous instincts, physical body, earlyexperiences.

2nd house : possessions and pleasures, sensuality, money, comfort, stability, earningpower, tactile beauty.

3rd house: communication, relatives, learningcapacity, lightheartedness, local environment, short trips.

4th house: home, family, emotional vulnerabil-ities, protective instincts, nurturing parent, realestate.

5th house: risk-taking, procreation, creativity,onstage activities, lovers, children, recreation,speculation.

6th house: competence, efficiency, work,

health, handling of details, colleagues, routines, service.

7th house: partners and partnership, need forbalance, harmony, aesthetics, contracts, com-petition, grandparents.

8th house: depth investigations, shared moneyand resources, intimacy instincts, sexuality, surgery, endings.

9th house: aspirations, beliefs, values, worldv i e w ( r e l i g i o n / p h i l o s o p h y ) , o p t i m i s m ,grandchildren, long trips.

10th house: sense of responsibility, career, authorities, reality principle, rule-making parent, status.

11th house: drive for individuation, originality, friends, groups, networking, future, children ofother people.

12th house: desire for infinite love and beauty, union, mysticism, imagination, unconscious, hidden matters.

If we take a quick look at one meaning ofVenus--your need for pleasure or what youenjoy--in terms of house placement, we mightsay:

Venus in 1st House: You enjoy action, self-expression, spontaneity. You like yourself. Youdelight in doing your own thing.

Although these examples give you someinitial impressions, every planet (and house andsign) has a rich array of possibilities. We couldcertainly say more about Venus (and we will--later). Keep in mind that what is most importantin any horoscope (and in the personality) isrepeated themes. Whatever is emphasized inthe person will be said again and again in thehoroscope. Always stay alert for issues thatcome up again and again in the horoscope. These lessons will help you learn to spot major, important repeated themes in horoscopes.

One of the simplest ways in which a themecan be repeated is when two or more planets

occupy the same sign or occupy the samehouse. In your chart, the following repetitionsoccur:

You have Mars and Pluto in Leo. So theLeonid themes deserve more attention: creative,risk-taking, charismatic, fun-loving, generous, exciting.

You have Jupiter and Neptune in Libra. Thusthe Libran themes are repeated: cooperative, diplomatic, fence-sitting, competitive, aesthetic,other-oriented.

You have the Sun and Mercury in Sagittarius. Thus the Sagittarian themes are highlighted:benevolent, optimistic, extravagant, enthusiastic, idealistic, philosophical.

You have the Sun and Venus in the 1sthouse. This means that the 1st house themesare repeated: personal action, identity, self-expression, spontaneous instincts.

You have Mars, Saturn and Pluto in the 9thhouse. So 9th house themes are expanded inimportance: aspirations, beliefs, values, worldview (religion/philosophy), optimism.

You have the Moon and Neptune in the 11thhouse. Therefore 11th house themes areemphasized: drive for individuation, originality, friends, groups, networking, future.

Personal Astrology Lesson 9

Learning to Spot Aspects Aspect Meanings

In spotting aspects, it is helpful to rememberthat the circle of the horoscope has 360 , soeach sign is 30 . Therefore, a sextile (60 aspect) occurs when planets are two signsapart. Squares (90 aspect) involve planetswhich are three signs apart. Trines (120 aspect) form between planets four signs apart.Quincunxes, or inconjuncts, (150 aspect) linkplanets separated by five signs. Oppositions(180 aspect) are present when planets are sixsigns apart. It is helpful to remember thesequence of the signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini,Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius,Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Note that thecircle starts again with Aries, so Aries is the"next" sign after Pisces.

If, for example, we consider your Ascendant,we note that its position is 08 18. We can thusassume that any planet at or around 8 degreesof a sign is probably making an aspect to yourAscendant, as shown below:

8 degrees of Capricorn (2 signs ahead) issextile.8 degrees of Virgo (2 signs behind) is sextile.8 degrees of Aquarius (3 signs ahead) is square.8 degrees of Leo (3 signs behind) is square.8 degrees of Pisces (4 signs ahead) is trine.8 degrees of Cancer (4 signs behind) is trine.8 degrees of Aries (5 signs ahead) is quincunx.8 degrees of Gemini (5 s igns behind) isquincunx.8 degrees of Taurus (6 signs away) is opposite.

When planets are very early or very late in asign, however, just counting signs will NOTshow you all of the aspects which are present. For example, in your chart Mars at 02 55 istrine (

) Pallas at 28 11 within 5 degrees, even

though Leo is 3 signs from Scorpio.

Counting signs will "work" for most aspects, but is more effort and slower than using the ele-

ments and qualities--the fastest way to spotaspects. [If you do count signs, remember thathouses are not the same as signs. Signs arealways 30 . Houses, the wedges of thehoroscopic wheel, may be smaller than 20 orlarger than 45 . Two planets which are squareeach other, for example, will always be about90 apart in the zodiac (usually three signsapart). However, the planets might be only twohouses apart in the horoscope (when housesare "big"), or the squaring planets could be fourhouses apart (when houses are "small"). Whenlooking for aspects, you cannot count fromhouse to house.]

Remembering the elements and qualities isthe easiest way to spot aspects (and is useful inidentifying repeated themes as well). Here is areview of the elements and qualities for thetwelve signs.

Aries: cardinal fireTaurus: fixed earthGemini: mutable airCancer: cardinal waterLeo: fixed fireVirgo: mutable earthLibra: cardinal airScorpio: fixed waterSagittarius: mutable fireCapricorn: cardinal earthAquarius: fixed airPisces: mutable water

In working with aspects, except for planets inthe very early or very late degrees of a sign, ele-ments trine one another. Thus, planets near thesame degree of fire signs (

   ) trine one

another. So do planets near the same degree ofthe earth signs ( ); planets around thesame degree of the air signs ( # ); andplanets around the same degree in the watersigns ( ! ). Your chart has trines involvingthe following planets in the elements shown.

1st Planet 2nd Planet Orb Element @ 05 29 @ 02 55 2 34 fire% @ 11 45 @ 15 43 3 57 fire" @ 15 # 50 @ 15 15 0 36 air" @ 15 # 50 @ 17 02 1 11 air @ 19 40 " @ 15 # 50 3 50 air

You also have the following "out of sign"trines in your horoscope:

1st Planet Elem 2nd Planet Elem Orb @ 02 55 fire @ 28 11 water 4 44

Note that in Astro’s standard Color Charts, planets in fire signs appear in red; planets inearth signs print in green; planets in air signs areaqua; while planets in water signs are printed inblue.

When three planets (or points) each trine oneanother, the configuration is called a "grandtrine." It is one form of a repeated theme.Grand trines suggest strong potential talent (butalso possible excesses). Harmony is highlightedbetween the drives symbolized by the planetsmaking the grand trine. In addition, the signsusually share one element, emphasizing skills inthe related areas (e.g., confidence and expres-sion for fire; practicality and realism for earth;objectivity and communication for air andempathy and sensitivity for water). Houses mayalso share an element, and imply assets for therelated areas.

Your chart does not have a grand trine.

Because the elements (and qualities) of signsmake i t eas iest to spot aspects , we areemphasizing signs here. Do not forget that thefinal analysis will also include the nature of theplanets involved (the single most importantfactor) and the nature of the houses involved. We look to signs first merely as the simplest wayto see most aspects.

As we have noted (in Lesson 6), the signssharing a certain element have commonalities--share threads. Thus, the trine aspect suggestspotential ease, natural harmony, commonality. Itcan also point to extremes as it is easy to over-do "what comes naturally." Trines suggest inneragreement (and potential excesses) and high-light potential talents.

Fire trines point to initiative, confidence,

extraversion, spontaneity, and pioneering spirit.Earth trines represent practicality, a feeling fortangibles and the earth, common sense and sta-bility. Air trines symbolize communication skills, objectivity, equalitarian instincts and the capacityto detach. Water trines indicate sensitivity, intui-tion, merging instincts and a feeling for patterns.

You might note that, in terms of signs, youhave the greatest number of trines involvingsigns in the element of air. This suggestspotential talent in terms of the intellect, com-munication, detachment.

In Lesson 8, we noted that certain conjunc-tions involve planets whose themes are "easy"to combine, while other planets’ themes aremore challenging to blend. Conjunctionsbetween planets which are "naturally" trine oneanother mix themes that blend easily, reinforceand support one another (but may be overdone). This includes the fire planets/asteroid with eachother ( ) ; the ear th p lanets andasteroids with each other ( ); the airplanets and asteroids with each other ( " );and the water planets with each other ( % $ ).Conjunctions between planets which share anelement emphasize the nature of that element, and suggest potential talent in terms of the ele-ment represented.

Jupiter and Chiron, which are conjunct inLibra in the 12th house, share the element offire, suggesting that it will be relatively easy foryou to focus on initiative, creativity, expressive-ness. Your talent may flow particularly in thearea of desire for infinite love and beauty, union, mysticism, imagination (according to houseplacement), or in terms of being cooperative, diplomatic, fence-sitting, competitive, aesthetic,other-oriented (based on sign placement).

Ceres and Vesta, which are conjunct inSagittarius in the 2nd house, share the elementof earth, suggesting that it will be relatively easyfor you to focus on pragmatism, achievement, being grounded. Your talent may flow particular-ly in the area of possessions and pleasures, sensuality, money, comfort, stability (accordingto house placement), or in terms of beingbenevolent, optimistic, extravagant, enthusiastic,

Qualities square and oppose each other. The cardinal signs (

 ! ) each square the

next. Alternating cardinal signs oppose eachother (

/ and ! / ). Ditto for the fixed signs

( ) and for the mutables ( # ).

In addition to single squares, a chart can fea-ture what is called a "grand square" or a "grandcross." This requires four planets (or points),each one square the next. Visualize the "naturalwheel" with 12 equal size wedge-shapedhouses, and put Aries in the 1st house, Taurusin the 2nd, etc. The angles on a natural wheelform a "grand cross"--a large cross through thecenter of the circle. Each angle is 90 from thenext. The Ascendant at 0

 squares the IC at

0 ! which squares the Descendant at 0 whichsquares the Midheaven at 0 .

If you were to draw lines, connecting theangles where each one meets the horoscopecircle, you would create a large box around thehoroscopic wheel--symbolizing the "grandsquare." A grand square and a grand crossrefer to the same configuration: four (or more)planets and points, all of which are square (andopposite) one another. Generally, such a con-figuration will share a quality by sign (e.g., allcardinal, all fixed or all mutable).

Your horoscope does not contain a grandcross.

A grand cross is one form of a repeatedtheme: the configuration emphasizes that certainissues must be faced. The challenges inherentin such placements have been cal led thecardinal dilemma, the fixed dilemma and themutable dilemma.

Thus you can guess (correctly) that conjunc-tions between planets which share a quality arechallenging. For example, cardinal Mars’independence and loner instincts vie with thedependency/nurturance focus of the cardinalMoon. The drives of both the Moon and Mars

compete with the partnership/sharing urges ofPallas and Juno (or Venus in its Libra sense),while the executive drive and urge to controlwhich cardinal Saturn symbolizes can be atodds with all of the others.

Similarly, Venus’ fixed urge for personalpleasures and possessions vies with the Sun’sdesire to love and be loved, to shine and beadmired. They both compete with Pluto’s drivefor insight, self-discipline and self-control, whileUranus represents the urge for freedom, variety, change and openness to humanity.

With the mutables, the "quantity" (curiousabout everything) focus of Mercury (in theGemini sense) vies with the "quality" (putknowledge to work) focus of Mercury (in theVirgo sense) as well as Ceres and Vesta.Letters 3 and 6 (mutable) focus on everydayreality, the here-and-now details of people andtasks in the vicinity which can compete with thequest for truth, the focus on long-range idealsand values of Jupiter (and Letter 9 in general).Jupiter’s intellectual aspirations may be at oddswith the quest for infinite love and beauty whichNeptune symbolizes. The "idealism" of Jupiterand Neptune can challenge the focus on here-and-now reality to which the Mercury-ruled signsand houses point.

Reread the interpretation (in Lesson 8) ofthese conjunctions and see how the themes canconf l ict with one another and need to beintegrated.

Combining conflicting themes takes aware-ness and discipl ine. Usual ly, integrat ioninvolves either taking turns (between competingdrives) or finding a way to do a little bit of each. The "cardinal dilemma" (or balancing act of

integrating the four different cardinal urges)involves making peace between freedom,dependency/nurturance, equality and control. On an outer level, it includes keeping room in lifefor self-expression and self-development needs, home and family, partnership relationships, anda career . A card ina l d i lemma might beemphasized through squares between cardinalsigns, cardinal houses, and/or cardinal planets.

The "fixed dilemma" calls for integration ofself-indulgence, self-expansion, self-control andself-proportion. Security needs may vie withrisk-taking instincts. The issue of power mayneed to be faced, particularly in terms of sharingthe sensual/sexual/financial world with someoneelse. Loyalty, endurance, willpower and con-stancy could be issues. Fixed dilemmas can behighlighted through planets, houses and signs.

People with the "mutable dilemma" may facethe challenge of being scattered (jack/jill of alltrades and master of none) or deal with trying tointegrate dreams, ideals and perfectionism withthe real world of work and communicating toothers. With each dilemma, integration meansthe individual is more versatile, able to bedifferent people in different situations, able to ac-tualize various sides of his/her being at differenttimes in life. Squares between mutable planets, houses and/or signs can highlight the mutabledilemma.

Your chart has squares involv ing thefollowing planets in the qualities shown:

Air and fire are considered elements com-patible with each other. Both tend to be "up"elements--more lighthearted, more extraverted, more present and future-oriented, inclinedtoward variety. Earth and water are consideredcompatible elements. Both tend to be more"down" elements--more serious, more introver-ted, more past and present-oriented, inclined

toward stability, safety and the status quo.Compatible elements sextile and oppose oneanother. Fiery

If you memorize your oppositions (as will besuggested below) and know your elements, seeing sextiles becomes very easy. Planets thatare near the same degree (within a 3 orb forsexti les) of f ire and air signs--but are notopposite each other--are sextile. Planets nearthe same degree of earth and water signs--butnot opposite--are sextile each other.

Sextiles imply mild harmony. These parts oflife are usually compatible and easy to combinewith each other. Thus, conjunctions involvingplanets which are "naturally" sextile each otherare easier to express positively. ______

There are six polarities in astrology: pairs ofsigns (and houses) opposite one another. Eachpair of oppositions shares a quality (e.g., bothcardinal; both fixed or both mutable). It is helpfulto memorize these six pairs. They make up theoppositions. Knowing oppositions allows you todistinguish between them and sextiles withoutcounting signs. Following are the basic sixpolarities in astrology:

Aries opposes LibraTaurus opposes ScorpioGemini opposes SagittariusCancer opposes CapricornLeo opposes AquariusVirgo opposes Pisces

Of course, these polarities can be reversed. That is, it is just as accurate to say "Libraopposes Aries" as to say "Aries opposes Libra."

Oppositions point to areas of life where weare looking for a balance. They are oftenexperienced as a seesaw: it is easy to go up onone side (overdoing one end) and then up onthe other side (overdoing the opposite). It isalso relatively easy to identify with one end of anopposition and attract other people (especially

loved ones) who express the opposite side(often to excess). The challenge is to find amiddle ground, a happy medium, a point ofsynthesis that allows for the best of both.Although oppositions share a quality (just assquares do), they are easier to integrate thansquares are. There is a natural partnershipinvolved in the opposing themes. Each needsthe other, and there is an inner pull towardsynthesis.

By now, you are familiar with the basic 12-letter alphabet so could extrapolate the themesof the oppositions. Think for a moment aboutthe polarities, then check the short listing below.(You can supply more details on your own.Refer back to Lesson 3 if needed.)

1/7 (includes

2/8 (includes / ): self-indulgence versus self-control; personal possessions and pleasuresversus shared possessions and pleasures;"mine" versus "ours".

3/9 (includes # / ): short-range versus long-range; immediate environment versus goals forfuture; early learning versus advanced educa-tion; vicinity versus faraway places.

4/10 (includes ! / ): mother versus father; com-passion versus pragmatism; home versuscareer ; domest ic i ty /dependency versusdominance/authority.

5/11 (includes / ): heart vs. head; loved onesvs. friends; excitement/passion vs. detachment/humanitarian perspectives.

6 /12 ( inc ludes / ) : rea l versus idea l ;pragmatism versus dreams; nitty-gritty detailsversus Ultimate Oneness; criticism versus rose-colored glasses; focus versus diffusion.

You have the following oppositions in yourchart. Note that oppositions almost alwaysinclude a house polarity as well as a sign polar-ity. Look particularly to see if any polarities arerepeated (repeats are marked with an asterisk).

Once you can identify the oppositions, quincunxes become easier to see, as theyinvolve the signs on either side of the opposition. For example, Cancer opposes Capricorn. Therefore, Cancer is quincunx Sagittarius (thes ign before Capr icorn) and Cancer a lsoquincunxes Aquarius (the sign after Capricorn).

Take a moment to see if you can work outeach two signs that quincunx every sign of thezodiac, and then check your thinking against thelist below. (Some authors and books will call thequincunx an inconjunct.)

quincunxes and (1st house is "naturally"

 qu incunxes and (12 th house i s "naturally" 5th & 7th).

Note that quincunxes put together two signsof incompat ib le elements. Furthermore, quincunxes combine signs that have nothing incommon. Normally, the elements are different(and somewhat incompatible, i.e., fire with wateror earth; earth with air or fire; air with water orearth and water with fire or air). Furthermore, quincunxes cross the major thirds of the zodiac.(One can divide the zodiac--and houses--intot h i r d s : p e r s o n a l , i n t e r p e r s o n a l a n dtranspersonal. The first four signs and housesare personal; the next four are interpersonal andthe last four are transpersonal or universal. Thiswill be discussed in more detail when we look atother themes in the chart.)

Because we are combining incompatible ele-ments and qualities, and crossing the majorthirds of the horoscope, the quincunx is the mostdifficult aspect to integrate. People often feel a"forced choice" situation with a quincunx: "If Iwant this, I can’t have that." They may feelunable to put the two drives together. They mayfeel pulled in very different directions. Thechallenge is to, nonetheless, find a way to havea little bit of both, or to take turns between thethemes involved in a quincunx.

Your chart has the following quincunxes:

It could be quite a challenge for you to com-bine these themes in your nature. You mightswing between them, or project one end(attracting other people who overdo it), or

Our major focus, thus far, has been inhelping you to learn to see aspects. Some inter-pretation has occurred along the way. However,as indicated earlier, the most important factor inall aspects is the nature of the planets involved. Thus, our next lesson will involve interpretationsfor every single one of your aspects in terms ofthe planets which are connected. After that, wewill consider methods for integrating house andsign data as well.

Personal Astrology Lesson 14

More Themes

Although repeated issues in a horoscopemay be ref lected by a single letter of theastrological alphabet, things are often not sosimple. Interpretation is a matter of knowingwhat various factors have in common, how theyback up and reinforce one another and how theycompete and conflict with one another.

Included below are some suggested themeswhich combine two or more letters of theastrological alphabet. Each theme is identifiedby a simple description. Following the colon is alisting of the letters of the alphabet which con-tr ibute to that theme (share that theme).Preceding the name of the theme is a fraction inp a r e n t h e s e s . T h i s f r a c t i o n g i v e s t h eapproximate odds of a given theme. Forexample, since the freedom theme includesthree letters (1, 9, 11) of the 12-letter alphabet, itwould tend to come up about 1/4 of the time.Or, from another perspective, people’s chartswhich emphasize 1, 9 and 11 for more than 1/4of their letters have a high emphasis on theneed for freedom.

(1/4) Freedom: 1, 9, 11(1/3) Closeness or Interpersonal: 4, 5, 7, 8(1/6) Competence/Critical Judgment: 6, 10(1/3) Intellectual Focus: 3, 6, 9, 11(1/4) Organizational Skills: 6, 8, 10(1/6) Idealistic: 9, 12(1/4) Beauty Focus: 2, 7, 12(1/2) Security Needs: 2, 4, 8, 10(1/3) Risk-Taking Needs: 1, 5, 9, 11(1/6) Relationship (one-to-one) Focus: 7, 8(1/6) Parental Orientation: 4, 10(1/4) Power Drive: 5, 8, 10(1/3) Personal ("I") Focus: 1, 2, 3, 4(1/3) Transersonal (greatest good for greatestnumber) Focus: 9, 10, 11, 12(1/3) Mechanical Skills: 1, 3, 6, 11(1/3) Past-Oriented: 4, 8, 10, 12(1/4) Future-Oriented: 5, 9, 11

Look again at the seven major categories ofemphasis in a chart: occupied houses and signs,

planets conjunct angles, the most aspectedplanet, the planet with the most close aspects, planets "at home" by house or sign, housesoccupied by their ruler and houses ruled by theirnatural ruler. Here is what those categories looklike for your chart (with asteroids):

Occupied houses and signs: 1st (occupied by: ) 2nd (occupied by: ) 9th (occupied by:

Note that each sign or planet is followed bythe letter of the astrological alphabet whosemeaning it shares. Because each of thoseletters is emphasized in one way or another, anytheme is important in your nature if all of itsletters appear at least once. Thus your charthas the following themes emphasized:

Freedom

There is a strong freedom theme in yourbasic make-up. This indicates an intense needto be yourself, be original, unique and not likeanyone else. You are likely to resist beingpinned down and tied down by anyone. Naturalself-expression becomes important; the "yesman" role does not appeal. You like going yourown way.

Closeness

There is a strong closeness theme in yourbasic identity. This indicates a strong involve-ment with other people on a face-to-face level.Warmth, caring and the ability to love may bequite marked. However, your associations witho t h e r s c a n b e c o m p e t i t i v e a s w e l l a sharmonious. You are learning about yourselfthrough interacting with others, but it is notnecessarily all sweetness and light. Indeed, if

you feel those around you are getting too close, you may choose to retreat, within yourself, for atime. You need some alone time to processyour inner reactions to all this interchange.

Strong family connections are one way tomeet your need for attachment. Pets may alsobe sources for a caring exchange. Sharing, intimacy and one-to-one relationships matter toyou.

Idealistic

There is a strong idealistic theme within yournature. This can be expressed as high personalstandards for your behavior or as feeling thatyou have a lot to measure up to. Your life canbe guided by a sense of inspiration from above. You may also demand more than is reasonableof yourself or feel that you already are perfectand need expect nothing more. A seeking, asensing, a yearning for something more in yourown life and behavior is important.

Beauty needs

There is a strong artistic theme in your basicmake-up. This can be real talent for creatingbeauty as well as a natural feeling and apprecia-tion for the aesthetic. Expression can rangeover many areas--from the beauty of nature, ofpainting, photography, sculpture, handicrafts, tocreating a meal that is a work of art, making alovely garden, sewing exquisite clothes or otherforms of expressing a feeling for harmony, grace, design and balance.

Security needs

You have a strong need for security in termsof your basic self-expression. Less inclined torock the boat, you tend to seek out the safestpath, take the tried-and-true variation andgenerally go with the known, the predictable, thestatus quo. Both physical and emotional secur-ity seem bulwarks in an increasingly changingand challenging world.

Risk-taking needs

You have a strong need for risk, creativity

and change in terms of your basic self-expres-sion. Inclined to take chances, to lay it on theline, to play the odds (and even go against theodds), you are seeking to expand your optionsand widen your horizons. (If overdone, youcould simply split from any situations you defineas too confining.) Independence of action inorder to pour out from your own center is vital. You recognize that some kind of gamble is oftennecessary to go beyond what has been donebefore. You are open to growth, eager to domore.

Relationship (one-to-one) focus

There is a strong relationship theme in yourbasic nature: learning through other people. This can be a comfortable, peer exchange withmutual pleasure and sharing. Or, it can be com-petitive, game-playing, with contests to see whocan get one-up on the other. You learn muchabout yourself through observing and interactingwith other people.

Parental orientation

Parental themes are strongly emphasizedwithin your nature. This could indicate that yourparents had a profound impact and influence onyour development. They may have been majorexamples (positive and/or negative) for you--what you want to do or what you do not want todo.

It is also possible that you could come acrossto other people as rather parental. This caninclude being strong, responsible, dependable, nurturing, protective and inclined to take care ofothers. Your relationships might easily slip intoparent/child interactions rather than equalexchanges. Unfinished business with yourparents (old feelings, old "buttons" gettingpushed) might be met again through the peopleyou work with, love, etc.

This theme also points to a polarity whichcould be a recurring focus in your life: momversus dad, home and family versus work in theworld, unconditional versus conditional love, gentleness versus authority, and compassionversus pragmatism. Balancing these supposed

opposites could be a life-long quest for you.

Power drive

There is an intense power drive in your basicnature. This can express a determination to runyour own life, a need to win, and/or a desire tobe on top and in charge. Directing the competi-tive zeal into sports, games, business or fightingfor causes helps cut down on conflicts in otherareas of life. If not positively channeled, theneed to win can lead to power struggles, fightsand unpleasantness with people you prefer tocooperate with. Your determination to havethings "right" often means having them yourway. You need a place to put your full powerout onto the world--to strive, to push, to win, torun things exactly as you want--with end resultsthat are positive and affirming for everyone con-cerned.

Personal focus

You are likely to be very aware of what youwant and need in life. Probably fairly secure inyour basic sense of self, you tend to be clearabout who you are and your desires in life. Ifcarried to an extreme, this can manifest asself ishness or self-centeredness. But, inmoderation, this indicates a good capacity toknow yourself and satisfy your basic desires inlife.

Transpersonal focus

You are likely to feel a part of somethingbeyond just your own, personal self. Whetherthat connection is to humanity, to God, to apolitical or social cause or simply a sense of un-ity with Life, you tend to operate from a broadperspective. Rather than focusing on yourindividual needs, you probably include questionsof the greatest good for the greatest number anda historical perspective. Some sense of howdecisions and choices impact the world andwhat they might imply for other people or societyat large is central to who you are.

Past-oriented

A strong feeling for the past is suggested.

This might manifest as sentimentality, as aninterest in history, antiques or anything thatlooks backward. Memories may be important.Nostalgia is possible. This sensitivity to whathas been can help you to learn if used wisely. Ifoverused, you might be too bound by oldpat terns in some respects. Somet imes, releasing and letting go is a challenge. In itsmos t cons t ruc t i ve fo rm, you have fu l l yincorporated (on an emotional level) your pastexperiences and use the wisdom gained toimprove your future.

Future-oriented

You are likely to have a strong feeling for thefuture. You may have talent for visualizing andimaging what lies ahead, for planning futuregoals. A progressive bent to the mind is pos-sible. You may sometimes be living more for thefuture than in the present (if this theme is over-done)--perhaps dreaming great dreams, but notreally grounding them. When constructivelyapp l ied , th is theme h igh l igh ts c reat ive ,groundbreaking abilities to bring the new intobeing, to reach for the stars. The optimistictenor of this motif often contributes to a con-fident thrust into life. You are probably willing totry, to pioneer, to move ahead in life as you tendto trust the future, and believe that what liesahead will be even better.

If you ignore asteroids, your emphasis factorslook so:

Occupied houses and signs: 1st (occupied by: ) 9th (occupied by: % ) 11th (occupied by: $ ) (Letter 5; occupied by: % ) (Letter 7;occupied by: $ ) (Letter 9; occupied by: )Planets conjunct angles: % (Letter 8:

Competence

There is a strong theme of basic competencewithin your make-up. This is an orientationtoward efficiency, productivity and pragmatism. You have a talent for spotting flaws and areinclined to want to improve things. If directedtoward the material world, your urge to "make itbetter" can be extremely valuable, making you ahighly appreciated worker. If directed towardrelationships, you may be hard to please andinclined to nit-pick. If self-directed, you may betoo self-critical and spend all your time focusingon liabilities rather than assets.

Skill at understanding how things work, agood capacity for discipline, a sense of responsi-bility and a strongly practical streak exist withinyou. Excessively harsh judgments could lead tofeeling blocked, inhibited and inadequate. Yourrealistic approach can lead to many solid, helpfulaccomplishments in the world. You appreciateresults and like to create something lasting withyour efforts.

Intellectual focus

The need for mental stimulation is verystrong in your nature. You naturally seek tothink, communicate, and exchange information. You may teach, talk, write or communicateprofessionally, or you could simply enjoy alifestyle of constant learning and sharing ofknowledge.

Ideas and people are essential in your life. You thrive on intellectual exchanges and need tobe challenged mentally. Concepts, theories, and vicarious learning come easily to you. Youmind is likely to affect all parts of your life, be-cause it is a central part of who you are.

Organizational skills

There is a strong theme of focused attentionwithin your basic make-up. This shows potentialtalent for organization, efficiency, thoroughness, the hand l ing o f de ta i l s , w i l l power anddetermination to do things well. If carried toofar, it can be picky, critical, judgmental, annoyingand practically drive other people crazy. Be

sure your penchant for details and desire tohave things just right has a positive outlet.

Mechanical skills

This theme indicates potential skill withmechanical things. The accent is on a combina-tion of finger dexterity, metal tools and weapons, and new technology. You may have an instinc-tive sense of how things work and what isnecessary to make physical objects functionmore efficiently. You may be a natural withrepairs. Some of the "fixer-upper" qualities ofthis combination can be directed toward themind. Curiosity is likely to be marked. Youprobably have a strong drive to learn and yourmind may work quite rapidly. However, you arealso likely to have skill with handicrafts ormechanical abilities.

______

There is also another approach to looking forvarious themes in the horoscope. That is to seehow much the theme factors reinforce oneanother. For example, since Letters 1, 9 and 11are freedom factors, we would look to see howoften (in a given chart) Mars, Jupiter and Uranusaspect one another or occupy each other’s signsor houses. Clearly, you will need a certainamount of practice (and seeing lots of charts) inorder to decide whether the theme factors arereinforcing each other a lot, a l i t t le, or anaverage amount.

Below, we will list how the various themefactors reinforce each other in your chart. Wehave also run means (averages) and standarddeviations (on 10,000 charts) for these intercon-nections. Checking interrelationships among themeletters without the asteroids is left as an exercise(for space reasons).

A third approach to spotting themes would beto use the "combinations of two" (covered inLessons 7 and 13).

The following combinations of two areemphasized:

1/5: Sun in 1st, Mars in Leo, Ruler of 1st in Leo,Sun trine Mars.3/4: Ruler of 3rd in Cancer, Ruler of 4th inGemini, Moon square Mercury.6/9: Ruler of 9th in Virgo, Ruler of 6th in 9th,Ceres in Sagittarius, Vesta in Sagittarius, Ceressextile Chiron.9/10: Ruler of 10th in Sagittarius, Saturn in 9th,Jupiter square Saturn.9/11: Ruler of 9th in 11th, Ruler of 11th inSagittarius, Uranus trine Chiron, Jupiter trineUranus.

These "combinations of two" suggest that thefollowing themes may be relevant:

Freedom Theme: see earlier text.

Competence Theme: see earlier text.

Intellectual focus: see earlier text.

Risk-taking needs: see earlier text.

Parental orientation: see earlier text.

Mechanical skills: see earlier text.

Future-oriented: see earlier text.

In addition to the basic "building blocks" ofastrology (planets, houses, signs and aspects),other factors or ways of grouping factors can bemeaningful in the quest for repeated themes. That will be our next topic.

Personal Astrology Lesson 27

Analyzing Beliefs and Values

This lesson will cover the area of beliefs, values and faith. Our assumptions about truth, reality, and the way the world is affect our ac-tions. The horoscope can help pinpoint basicbeliefs, including those of which we may be lessconscious.

As discussed in Lesson 18, beliefs in thehoroscope are particularly related to Letters 9and 12 of the astrological alphabet. Letter 9 hasto do with our intellectual world view, whetherwe look to religion, philosophy, education, aspiritual leader, a guru, travel or other forms ofexploration and adventuring for a sense ofmeaning. It is our quest for truths that can beput into words and expressed in the world, ourdr ive for u l t imate knowledge. Let ter 12symbolizes our yearning for the emotionalexperience of union with the Whole, our urge forcosmic consciousness, our seeking of infinitelove and beauty. Paths may vary from artistic, healing, helping or escapist activities, but theshared thread is a quest for the sense of union,of absolute ecstasy. Both 9 and 12 are keys toour ideals and ideas, where we place our faith, what we va lue and be l ieve is u l t imate lyimportant in life.

It is possible to make a case for includingLetter 11 (perhaps at half-weight) as it is con-sidered related to "hopes and wishes" and toone’s future orientation. This analysis, however, will focus only on Letters 9 and 12 which seemthe major keys to conscious and unconsciousfaith, trust, values and assumptions about life.

Factors will be listed in order of importance(those requiring the heaviest weight given first).Aspects other than the conjunction or parallelwill be dealt with separately. Conjunctions andparallels show automatic blending. The otheraspects indicate how other parts of life relate toyour beliefs and values.

First we consider any conjunctions to Jupiter(9), Neptune (12), Chiron and the rulers of your

9th and 12th houses.

Conjunctions to Jupiter: Juno (7), Chiron (9 &11).Conjunctions to Neptune: Juno (7).Conjunctions to Chiron: Jupiter (9), Juno (7).Conjunctions to the Moon ruler of the 9th: none.Conjunctions to the Sun ruler of occupied Leo inthe 9th: Pallas (7).Conjunctions to Venus ruler of the 12th: none.Conjunctions to Pluto ruler of unoccupiedScorpio in the 12th: Midheaven (10).

Second, we consider any planets (their basicnature) in the 9th and 12th houses. We includeany planets within two degrees of the 9th house, but occupying the 8th or 10th, as well as anyplanets within two degrees of the 12th, butoccupying the 11th or 1st houses.

Planets in 9th/12th house: Mars (1), Saturn (10),Pluto (8), Jupiter (9), Juno (7), Chiron (9 & 11).Planets within 2 of the 9th/12th: Neptune (12).

Third, we tally any parallels to the relevantbodies. We also include their house place-ments. We list the cusps ruled by planetsoccupying the 9th or 12th houses. (Forexample, if the Sun is in the 12th, on what cuspdoes Leo fall?) We also list the houses ruled byany planets conjuncting the beliefs/valuesbodies. Planets in Sagittarius and Pisces areshown.

House of Jupiter: 12th.House of Neptune: 11th.House of Chiron: 12th.House of the Moon ruler of the 9th: 11th.House of the Sun ruler of occupied Leo in the9th: 1st.House of Venus ruler of the 12th: 1st.House of Pluto ruler of unoccupied Scorpio inthe 12th: 9th.Houses of Planets within 2 of the 9th/12th:11th.Parallels to Jupiter: none.Parallels to Neptune: none.Parallels to Chiron: none.Parallels to the Moon ruler of the 9th: none.Parallels to the Sun ruler of occupied Leo in the9th: Vesta (6).

Fourth, we look at the signs of the beliefs/values bodies and houses in which Sagittariusand Pisces fall (and whether they are occupied).

Sign of Jupiter: Libra (7).Sign of Neptune: Libra (7).Sign of Chiron: Libra (7).Sign of the Moon ruler of the 9th: Virgo (6).Sign of the Sun ruler of occupied Leo in the 9th:Sagittarius (9).Sign of Venus ruler of the 12th: Scorpio (8).Sign of Pluto ruler of unoccupied Scorpio in the12th: Leo (5).Sign placements of planets conjunct or parallelbeliefs/values bodies: Libra ( ), Libra ( ),Libra ( $ ), Libra ( ), Libra ( ), Scorpio( ruler of 9th), Sagittarius ( ruler of9th), Gemini ( " % ruler of 12th).Signs of Planets within 2 of the 9th/12th: Libra(7).Occupied signs in the 9th/12th House: Cancer(4; occ by ), Leo (5; occ by % ), Libra (7; occby ).Houses occupied by Sagittarius: 1st, 2nd.Houses occupied by Pisces: 4th, 5th.Unoccupied signs in the 9th/12th House:Scorpio (8).

The next step is to scan your results, notingwhich letters of the alphabet, or which themespredominate. Remember that the factors listedfirst should be weighted more than those listedlater. We will give you a listing based on simplerepetitions without differentiating in terms of

weight, and we will also list themes which aresignif icant according to our computerizedweight ing sys tem. I t i s l i ke ly tha t bo thapproaches point to significant issues in terms ofyour beliefs and values.

Keeping in mind the overall chart (as always),let’s look at possible themes in terms of ultimateanswers.

Letter 1: 6 Letter 5: 4 Letter 9: 7Letter 2: 4 Letter 6: 5 Letter 10: 2Letter 3: 3 Letter 7: 15 Letter 11: 6Letter 4: 3 Letter 8: 5 Letter 12: 8

Letter 7, Letter 12, idealism, beauty focusand relationship focus may be significant basedon repetitions.

Letter 9, the element of fire and risk-takingneeds may be significant based on weights.

Your chart has no themes that are significantboth ways in this life area.

______

The final step is to incorporate aspects otherthan the parallel and conjunction. These otheraspects indicate the relationships between yourdrive for faith and other parts of life (e.g., self-e x p r e s s i o n w i t h L e t t e r 1 , f r i e n d s a n dindependence with Letter 11, etc.) First, youdivide all aspects to belief factors into harmony(sextile, trine) or conflict (square, opposition, quincunx). [If you wish to include other, moreminor aspects, the semi-sextile is generally con-sidered harmonious, while the octile and tri-octile are conflict aspects. Contra-parallels arealso considered conflict aspects.]

Then you consider the nature of the planets, houses, rulerships and signs involved in aspectsto your trust/faith factors (weighting the planetsmost, then houses, rulers and signs). You mayend up with a very mixed bag, or an emergingpattern. You could have a lot of conflict (orharmony) from the area of beliefs to a specificletter of the alphabet, or particular theme (suchas fire or freedom, etc.).

You can look at aspects also from theviewpoint of simple repetitions (e.g., how manytimes do belief factors conflict with Letter 4?) orfrom a weighted focus (planets being mostimportant, then houses, with signs last.) We donot recommend trying to assign actual weightsto planets, houses and signs. Rather wesuggest you use your global, intuitive capacity tosee patterns while holding priorities in mind. Ifyou have the impression that a certain letter hasa lot of harmony, or a lot of conflict, that isprobably a relevant conclusion.

It is quite possible that there may not be astrong theme in terms of harmony or conflict toyour basic assumptions. Our computerizedweighting system finds the following to be signifi-cant.

Your beliefs and values have the mostharmony to Letter 2: There is potential harmony between yourhighest values and your ability to enjoy thematerial world. Your comfort and predilection forease reinforce your vision of reality. Your beliefsystem is likely to support your ability to enjoymoney, possessions and sensual pleasures.

Your beliefs and values have the most con-flict to Letter 9: There is potential conflict in the area of faith, values, goals and beliefs. You may lack faith (inyourself or a Higher Power), have excessivefaith (rash, foolhardy), faith in inappropriateareas (looking to a human being to satisfy allyour needs) or simply confl ict ing values.Examination, clarification and the establishmentof value hierarchies can work wonders.

In terms of transcendent truth-seeking, you

have potential conflict, competition and the needto integrate the theme of freedom.

5. Katherine Kuhlman, a noted psychic healer, had a stellium in the 10th house (Pluto, Jupiter, Neptune, Ceres) withCeres, Jupiter, and Neptune in Cancer. Uranus and Mars in Capricorn in the 4th closely oppose the Neptune. Whatelement combination is in high focus? What are some characteristics of that combination? What theme is emphasizedwith those houses and signs?

14. What are the three planets associated with the possibility of mechanical skills and why?

15. If Moon, Pluto, Saturn and Neptune have the most aspects and the most CLOSE aspects in a chart, what theme dothey suggest?

16. Jerry Brown has 2 planets and an asteroid in Aries in the 9th; Jupiter in Aquarius; 2 asteroids in Sagittarius; Chiron inthe 11th; Mars conjunct Uranus and Mars square Jupiter.

What theme do these placements reinforce with each other?

17. What does NOT belong in the following list (and why):Sun in the 5thMars in AriesVesta in VirgoCeres in 6thMoon in the 9th.

(All positions exist in Gloria Steinem’s chart.)

18. Robert Redford has a stellium in Virgo in the 6th house. The 6th house stellium includes Venus, Neptune, Mercuryand Moon in Virgo as well as the Sun in Leo. Leo is on the cusp of the 6th house.

What planet(s) are “at home” by house and/or sign? Is the 6th house occupied by its rulers (natural or actual)? What word would NOT be an appropriate description for these placements: competent, dedicated, linear, careful, conscientious, focused on work, concerned with health, impulsive, a good craftsperson, able to figure out what iswrong and fix it.

ANSWERS

1. Fire—spontaneity, pioneering instinct, confidence, enthusiasm, need for excitement, possible addiction to adrenaline.

2. Relationships (or one-to-one focus) is the theme. Bette Midler was buddies with Shelley Long in Outrageous Fortune. Her close friendship with another woman was also central to Beaches.

3. Beauty or aesthetics. 4. Power.

5. Element combination is earth/water. “Mud” people tend to take themselves and life seriously and can be eitherdepressive or very nurturing and protective. They are oriented toward safety. The theme which is emphasized is parental:to be in charge, to assist, to be responsible, to look after, etc.

6. Risk-taking. 7. Security needs. 8. Closeness or interpersonal.

9. Idealism—search for the perfect vision or dream.

10. Future-oriented with 5, 9 and 11. When you add Letter 1, risk-taking is implied. (Risk-taking is, of course, also true for5, 9 and 11 without Letter 1.)

11. Letters 3, 6, 9 and 11 are involved. They share an intellectual or mental focus.

12. Letters 6, 8 and 10 are present. They share a theme of obsessive-compulsive qualities or organizational skills. If wesubtract Letter 8, we are left with 6 and 10 which emphasize work, productivity, competence and critical judgment. If wesubtract Letter 6 instead and add Letter 5, we would have a power theme.

13. The signs represent a personal focus. The houses represent transpersonal or universal focus. The combinationsuggests he needs to be personally active and involved in affecting the universal (“big”) scene—the greatest good for thegreatest number. This can include personal action (Aries) and monetary involvement (Taurus) focused through the lawand judiciary (9th house) or executive branch of the government (10th house). He wants to affect the establishment, thepowers that be, large-scale issues.

14. Mars, Mercury and Uranus are associated with mechanical skills. Mars rules all metal tools and weapons. Mercuryrules the eye-mind-hand coordination and visual perception. Uranus is associated with new technology of all kinds.

15. Past orientation. (Letters 4 and 10, the parental axis, are particularly associated with antiques as well.) Generally, water and Letter 10 are concerned with what has come before.

16. Freedom.

17. Moon in the 9th does NOT belong. All the other positions involve a planet or asteroid occupying a house or sign of thesame letter of the astrological alphabet as that planet. That is, the planet is “at home” by house or sign.

18. Mercury is “at home” by sign (Virgo) and house (6th house). The natural ruler of the 6th (Mercury) is in the 6th. Theactual ruler of the 6th (the Sun which rules the Leo cusp) is also in the 6th. The word which does NOT belong in thatdescription is impulsive.

Letter 9 has to do with ourintellectual world view, whether we look to religion, philosophy, education, a spiritual leader, a guru, travel or other forms ofexploration and adventuring for a sense of meaning. It is our quest for truths that can be put into words and expressed in theworld, our drive for ultimate knowledge. Letter 12 symbolizes our yearning for the emotional experience of union with theWhole, our urge for cosmic consciousness, our seeking of infinite love and beauty. Paths may vary from artistic, healing, helpingor escapist activities, but the shared thread is a quest for the sense of union, of absolute ecstasy. Both 9 and 12 are keys to ourideals and ideas, where we place our faith, what we value and believe is ultimately important in life.

Letter 1, Letter 7, the element of air, the cardinal quality, freedom, risk-taking needs, relationship focus, power and mechanicalskills may be significant based on weights.

Letter 1: I Will Find Truth—MY WAY

You tend to trust action and your own experience. Usually disinclined to accept the dogmas or traditions of other people, you willseek out a direct, personal experience of truth or the meaning of life. Your values revolve around self-expression, assertionand being true to one’s self. As a result, you might be very strong, active, courageous and in touch with who you are andwhat you want. Or, you could see your goal as reaching that state of freedom to be yourself with no strings, no inhibitionsfrom others.

You can be very active in your pursuit of ultimate knowledge—whether through traveling, studying, religious pursuits, spiritualquests or other avenues to figuring out the answers of the universe. One potential danger is the role of missionary. If youbelieve you have found the FINAL truth, you may slip into the position of a true believer and aggressively push your versionof religion/spirituality/ science/the answers to life upon other people. The result could be religious arguments (even minorwars!), heated philosophical discussions, conflicts over whose version of reality is more correct. You need a faith that makessense to you personally, but remember to allow other people room to have beliefs and perceptions different from yours.

Freedom

The freedom to search for the truth is one of your highest values. Placing a priority on liberty, you seek a sense of personalindependence and the ability to roam the world and search anywhere for life’s meaning. Inclined to reject the dogmas ofother people, you need to find your own sense of what the universe is all about.

Risk-taking Needs

You put your trust in a sense of optimism, faith and the willingness to go for more! Courageous and forward-going, you tend toseek out constant challenges and opportunities to grow and expand in understanding. Generally pioneering in your beliefs, you are unlikely to accept the status quo. Independent and creative in your thinking, you are able to move beyond outdatedideals and values. You tend to rock the religious (spiritual/scientific) boat in your search for further insight into the meaningof life.

Mechanical Skills

You are likely to believe in the intellect. You may trust and value thinking, communication, and learning. You could feel tornbetween trying to understand everything versus learning a few items thoroughly and well. Your “fixer-upper” tendenciescould be overdone into criticism and nitpicking if carried too far. You are likely to strive for constant mental growth, seekyour own, personal answers (independent of others’ ideas) and explore many byways in your quest for life’s meaning. 13. You can look at aspects also from the viewpoint of simple repetitions (e.g., how many times do belief factors conflict withLetter 4?) or from a weighted focus (planets being most important, then houses, with signs last.) We do NOTrecommend trying to assign actual weights to planets, houses and signs. Rather we suggest you use your global, intuitivecapacity to see patterns while holding priorities in mind. If you have the impression that a certain letter has a lot ofharmony, or a lot of conflict, that is probably a relevant conclusion.
