PERRY SO CONDUCTOR In the 2015-16 season, conductor Perry So made debuts with the Houston, New Jersey, Grand Rapids, Sarasota, Omaha, Shanghai and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestras, and returned to the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, Cape Philharmonic, the Round Top Festival, and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias. In that season, he gave three world premieres and his wide-ranging programs included works by composers as varied as Rameau, Beethoven, Schumann, Glazunov, Schoenberg, Chen Qigang and Guillaume Connesson. The 2016- 2017 season includes his German debut with the Rheinishe Philharmonie Koblenz and appearances with Orchestra New England, Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias, and the Royal Danish Ballet for Jewels. An inaugural Dudamel Conducting Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he received the First and Special Prizes at the Fifth International Prokofiev Conducting Competition in St Petersburg. His recording of Barber and Korngold's Violin Concertos with violinist Alexander Gilman and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra received the Diapason d’Or in January 2012. Recent highlights include debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra, the China Philharmonic, the Residentie Orkest in the Hague, and the Israel and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras. The latter he took over with five days' notice, and was immediately reinvited for the following season. Following his stint as conducting fellow at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he has been a frequent guest both at Walt Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. During his tenure at the Hong Kong Philharmonic, first as Assistant, then Associate Conductor, he led the orchestra with Lang Lang in an internationally televised celebration of the 15th Anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China. He toured the Balkan Peninsula with the Zagreb Philharmonic in the first series of cultural exchanges established after the breakup of Yugoslavia. In recent years he has appeared with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Zürcher Kammerorchester, the Royal Danish Opera, the New Zealand Symphony, the Japan Philharmonic, Singapore and National Taiwan Symphonies. He has conducted productions of Mozart's Cosí fan tutte and The Magic Flute, Britten's Turn of the Screw, Handel's Giulio Cesare, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Bernstein's Candide and Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus. His passion for working with young musicians has taken him to the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Round Top Festival, the Manhattan School of Music, the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, and the Yale School of Music. He has assisted Edo de Waart, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Gustavo Dudamel, Lorin Maazel and John Adams. Born in Hong Kong, Perry So studied Comparative Literature at Yale University, and currently lives in New Haven, Connecticut.
