NewsDistrictWelcome to the 2014-2015 school year!

We are so excited to have the kids back and are aiming to have this be the best year ever! A huge thank you goes out to our grounds crew and custodians for all their hard work over the summer—our facilities are in outstanding shape. Another round of applause goes out to our bus drivers for all their efforts in getting our 5,000 kids to school safely and efficiently. We thank our tremendously hard-working staff in advance for all the great things they will do with and for our kids this year. And last, but certainly not least, a huge thank you to you, our Perry community. You make our schools and community what they are—nothing less than the best! Here’s to a great year!

Sincerely,

Marty Bowe and Marlene Capuano

“Our Side of the Story” You may have seen an article in the Repository over the summer regarding our finances that stated we are “eating into its reserve funds…(showing) no end in sight.” We take exception to how we were portrayed, and note that we were never consulted prior to publication. The article was published based on an interpretation of a 5-year financial forecast that we submit to the state each year. We purposely and deliberately file our “worst case scenario,” taking nothing for granted. However, we want you to know that our fiscal responsibility remains of paramount importance, and the district remains strong! We would have chosen these words when talking about our finances:

“Perry is now entering their 18th straight year without asking their voters for more money—a feat that is unsurpassed in the county. Further, their savings balance remains among the highest in the state!”

As you are well aware, the state has cut our funding multiple times dating back to 2007, and we are running in the red. We continue to hold the line on all expenditures to the greatest extent possible. From 2006-2013, our expenditures increased a mere 0.7% per year on average, despite steep hikes in insurance and medical benefits costs, utility rates, food and fuel costs, and a never-ending list of unfunded mandates from the state. We consider that “Perry Pride!” Unfortunately, at the same time, our funding was cut nearly $3,000,000! If state funding remains unchanged, we will be forced to ask the community for additional millage at some point in time, just as every school must.

Please, at any time, if you have questions about our finances, do not hesitate to stop in. We will gladly go over anything, and will maintain 100% transparency.

On a semi-related note, on the same day that the finance article ran, a very nice article on our youth fields initiative ran, but didn’t mention the financing. If you are not aware, we are partnering with our youth athletic programs to develop vacant land we hold into athletic fields for our youth (we are in desperate need of all types of fields!). This will not be done with school district money! We are pursuing this partnership in the hopes of finding a win-win, providing the space and availability that are needed for our youth programs to flourish.

Thank you for your support of our schools! GO PERRY!

Open HouseLaughter, excitement, and anticipation were all evident when Genoa students and families visited during our annual open house! As students entered the building, in tow with filled backpacks of supplies, they quickly headed to their new classroom to meet the teacher and check out the learning community they will share for the next 180 days of school. Our staff has worked very hard over the summer preparing for the start of school. We are grateful to have another opportunity to work with students and families on this educational journal. We would like to welcome our incoming kindergarten class and new students to our Genoa family! Wishing all of Perry Local Schools the best school year! Welcome back!

New Staff This year our students at Knapp are going to be greeted by some new staff members. The new additions are eager to work with the students and their families. They feel so blessed to be a part of the Perry family.

Laurie Essig will be the new secretary at Knapp. She attended Stark State earning her degree in accounting. She has two children: Greg recently graduated from Perry High School and Scott will be a sophomore. Laurie enjoys gardening and spending time with her family.

Rania Fowler will be teaching preschool. She has a her undergraduate degree in early childhood education and master’s degree in curriculum and instruction for early

childhood. She came to Perry after working 16 years in Canton City. One of her favorite hobbies is raising monarch butterflies.

Ethan Kagy is the new PE teacher. He earned his PE degree from Toledo University. He is one of the varsity football coaches for Perry. Ethan enjoys playing golf or doing anything active.

Daniel Risher will be a Title I teacher. He earned his degree in early childhood education and reading endorsement at Kent State. He enjoys camping and boating.

Katie Schulman is an Intervention Specialist. She earned her undergraduate degree in early childhood education. She obtained her master’s degree as an Intervention Specialist. Katie is a runner. She has completed five marathons.

Melissa Watkins is the new guidance counselor. Her undergraduate degree is in psychology and her master’s degree is in school counseling. Her hobby is tending to her new born Ella.

Trimming of the Trees One of Perry’s esteemed bus drivers, Jeff McGill and his wife Jill took some time out of their busy schedules to trim the large oak trees and some of the other trees closer to the building this past summer. Jeff noticed the problem last fall when he would pull his bus through Knapp’s bus lane. He was concerned about visibility while pulling out into the street. The trees no longer cover up the building or message board. Thank you Jeff and Jill for making our school safer for our students. Your expertise has made Knapp beautiful for all to view.

beginning of the Year Fun

On August 14, T.C. Knapp Elementary hosted our annual open house. It was a grand occasion as the students and their parents were eager to enter the building to start off the school year. The students brought in their supplies and took a few minutes to meet their teacher.

“This is a wonderful night,” as one parent stated, “My child couldn’t wait to get here. She misses school so much over the summer!” The teachers also enjoy seeing the students, too. It is amazing to see how much the students grow over the summer. At Knapp the teachers and staff want to wish each student and their families a wonderful school year.

Upcoming EventsThe beginning of the year brings many new adventures and activities. The school will be busy with multiple events for you as parent, and the students. Here are just a few events that will be happening around Lohr.

Starting at the end of August, students will begin their fall fundraiser. The money earned during this time will help support behavior incentives, awards, field trips, new apps for our technology, and more.

The PTO board is beginning to organize their events for the year. They are asking for support from parents that are able to attend and facilitate the two classroom parties. There is a Room Parent Social on September 17 from 7:00-8:00 PM if you are interested in helping.

Lifetouch will be in the school on Friday, September 19 to take the students fall pictures. Everyone in the building will have their picture taken regardless of an order. Students’ pictures will be used for the yearbook in the spring. If your child should miss picture day, a retake option will be available on November 7.

Mark your calendars, the Lohr PTO has organized another even through COSI, Center of Science and Industry, for the school on Friday, October 17. This all day event allows our students to explore a topic in science through hands on learning stations. COSI requires many volunteers for this event in order to offer the different activities to the children. Watch for more information to be sent home on our website if you would like to volunteer.

Staff AdditionsFour new members have joined the Lohr team for the 2014-2015 school year. They will be servicing students in many different capacities. Mrs. Jaimie Brown will serve as our Gifted Intervention Teacher for Lohr, Genoa and Knapp students. She will instruct students in Grades 2-4 in reading math for those identified for the program. Mrs. Brittany Snee, an intervention specialist, has joined Lohr as an Individual Small Group Tutor. Mrs. Snee will be serving our students that require extra assistance in the classroom for both reading and math. Our third new member of the Lohr team is Mrs. Melissa Watkins. Her talents will be utilized as our new Guidance Counselor. Her schedule is shared between Lohr and Knapp students. All three of these ladies have many talents that will serve our students and Lohr families. Our last new member of the team is Mr. Chris Heckman. Mr. Heckman will be a familiar face to many parents that visit Lohr in the evenings. He will serve as our afternoon custodian. From literacy instruction to counseling services, they will be working to assist students in reaching their highest potential. We are very excited to have such a fabulous team at Lohr!

Pto NewsMany new parents ask how they can help support the students and teachers at Lohr throughout the year. Below are several ways to be involved.

Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels: Lohr PTO accepts both Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup Labels. Both of these programs help purchase new supplies for the classroom and school. You may submit at any time throughout the year by sending the labels to school with your child, or dropping them off at the school.

PTO Meetings: All are welcome to join the PTO Board for the monthly meetings. There is no obligation to meet each month. We welcome anyone that would like to know more about the PTO by attending a meeting. A typical meeting is held at the school on the second Tuesday of the month from 6:30-7:30 PM. Please watch for the reminder flyers that are sent home monthly right before each meeting.

If you would like to become more involved with the PTO and their events, volunteering opportunities are available. Events such as the classroom parties, COSI, Princess Ball, Boys Night Out and Family Fun Day all require many volunteers. Watch for the PTO newsletter to have their annual sign up within the first 2 weeks of school!

If you have any questions or concerns for the Lohr PTO, feel free to send in a letter or contact the PTO Board directly: Co-Presidents - Mrs. Janie Page and Mrs. Melissa Trompower; Vice-President - Mrs. Christine Hill; Secretary - Mrs. Rindi Stutzman; Treasurer - Mrs. Rachel Johnson.

PbIS(Positive behavioral Interventions and Supports)

This year Watson Elementary will be fully implementing the PBIS system building wide. PBIS is a behavioral intervention system built around modeling expected behaviors and putting interventions in place when students have difficulty meeting those expectations. This system is not replacing the CLIP IT behavior system that was put in place last year. This intervention program actually supplements that system and adds needed components such as the modeling and intervention support.

Students and parents will notice charts hung throughout the building this year in various areas. These charts, known as a Behavior Matrix, are built around our previously used Bee-Havior expectations of Being Respectful, Being Responsible and Being Safe.

The charts outline what positive behaviors look like throughout the building as well as on the bus. During the first few weeks of school, teachers will take their classes to specified areas of the building to model those expected behaviors. During the first day of school students also took part in a building wide assembly where expectations and behaviors were reviewed.

We will communicate more in regards to PBIS as we continue to grow these efforts throughout the year.

Panther battalion (JrotC)

The Panther Battalion (JROTC) spent July 13-19 at Camp Beaumont in Ashtabula County. The Cadets honed their skills on many activities from rock climbing to canoeing and from rappelling to archery. One of the more challenging events was the high ropes confidence course where cadets had to navigate through an obstacle while suspended 30 feet in the air. True to Perry’s “can do” spirit, the Cadets were the only group attending the camp to have all personnel complete all events. Thank you to all who helped make this possible!

On August 2, the cadets marched in the Hall of Fame parade at the request of Steve Toohy. They helped support The Flags of Freedom’s “Honor the Fallen” float. This float is dedicated to the service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

More Girls Tee Up!The Perry girls golf team has had a complete make-over. It has gone from a program that has been struggling to get young ladies out to play golf, to a program that now has 15 young ladies. These ladies may be new to golf, but they put forth effort each day to get better. The varsity carries six ladies and the JV program now has nine young ladies. The commitment level has now been set to a new standard. Overall, the team is young, but the two seniors have been providing extremely great leadership thus far.

Pfeiffer Upstanders

Pfeiffer Intermediate School is proud to have adopted the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. This program is the only research-based program with data to support the reduction of bullying behaviors if the program is followed with fidelity. This program is supported through the Stark County Educational Service Center and with a grant from the Sisters of of Charity.

The biggest difference in this anti-bullying program from others is that the emphasis is on changing the culture by empowering bystanders, rather than just trying to change the bullies and their victims. Pfeiffer’s committee has met throughout the summer. The committee consists of students, teachers, and parents. While we know we will never completely end bullying, our goal is to create a climate where bullying is not tolerated and where bystanders become upstanders. Our committee includes: Ashley Lockhart, Steve Pritchett, Stacey Evans, Gina Risher, Alison Romigh, Courtney Ehret, Erin Pittman, Rob Laskey, Beth Huprich, Vickie Briercheck, Erica Thom (who serves as our Stark County consultant and also a Pfeiffer parent), Riley Brown, Rebecca DePasquale, Dawson Groff, Amirah Mitchell, Behji Patton, Annabella Studebaker, Paul Wagner and Kathryn Yerian.

In early August, several students recorded a song (pictured top right) which will be used as our theme for the year.
