Pigeon problem causes a flapTAURIQ HASSEN

MANY welcome waking up to thecheerful chirping of birds outside,

but the effect is slightly less pastoralwhen pigeons are running amok in yourceilings.

Residents across Lavender Hill can’t takethe fowl play any more; hordes of pigeons areslipping into the spaces above their flats, andfears of poor hygiene accompany the birds’infuriating noise.

ResidentEliseWilson says she is sickof hit-tingher ceilingwithherbroomin theattemptto hush the pigeons, which are fighting overmates right above her head.

Dust falls from ceiling, and the flats areprone to infestations of fleas and ticks, Wil-son says. “These are dirty birds ... and theyare creating all sorts of problems for a lot ofthe residents in this community.”

Fellow resident Phillip Adams says the“dirty birds” are not the only problem; mice

and rats also make their way into the loftyspaces, and when they die the flats stink forweeks.

“It’s sickening, and this cannot be healthyfor the people living here,” Adams says. “TheCity of Cape Town has known about this prob-lem for a very long time, because this is notsomething that only started happening theother day.

“You can go to every flat in this area andthey will tell you the same thing about thebirds. It’s very unhealthy, because you don’tknow what these birds are carrying.”

Community leader Clive Jacobs says hehas the same problem in his own flat. He sayscomplaints were lodged with council, and theflats were inspected in May, after which itwas apparently determined that the roofsneeded “bird-proofing”.

“They said they would go around to the oth-er flats and check out the problems,” Jacobssays. “They even made my ceiling loose andnever fixed it, but said they would be return-ing. They have yet to come back.”

Jacobs says the birds are particularly infu-riating in the early hours of the morning,making “unusual noises” and continuously“flapping their wings”.

“This is a ridiculous problem to have, butit has a simple a solution that is not being en-forced by the City of Cape Town.”

Dr Ivan Bromfield, executive director forCity Health, says birds’ nests can be infestedwith lice, mites and various other insects.

“The health risks that could be associatedwith the exposure to birds, their droppingsandcontents of theirnests canvary frommildskin irritation to fungal or bacterial infec-tions, depending on the level of exposure.”

Jacobs says no illnesses have yet been re-ported to him by residents.

Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, MayoralCommittee Member for Human Settlements,says he is aware of the pigeon problem.“Birds are visible on most roofs, and tracesof nesting have been found inside the roofsof the flats,”he says. “This is anongoingprob-lem that worsens during the breeding sea-

son.”Sonnenberg says council workers remove

nests in problem houses and then seal entrypoints to stop the birds from returning.

The councillor says it is extremely difficultto control these birds, and encourages resi-dents to keep reporting their grievances totheir local Housing Office.

“The maintenance section should then in-vestigate and remedy the problem,” says Son-nenberg.

Grant Thornton, one ofthe people behind an inter-national business reportlaunched on InternationalWomen’s Day, says SouthAfrican businesswomenhold 27% of senior manage-ment positions, beating theglobal average of 20%. This

is largely attributed to theSouth African govern-ment’s work in promotinggender equality in theworkplace.

Women in business stillhave a long way to go insome respects, though: only3% of South African compa-nies surveyed had a femalechief executive officer – 5%lower than their globalcounterparts.

As such, PSA is workinghard to garner recognitionfor thewomenwhoso richlydeserve it, and praises thoseleading ladies who do theirbest to elevate South Africa.

In keeping with its Wom-en’s Month celebration,PSA is profiling some of itsmembers who have foundsuccess as dynamic busi-nesswomen.

The Clover Mama mis-sion

The first high-poweredwoman under the limelightis Professor Elaine Vlok,who is the corporate socialinvestment manager for theaward-winning Clover Ma-ma Afrika Trust. PSA inter-

viewed her about being awoman in business and hersecrets to success, andtouched on some of the chal-lenges she experiences.

“Our business, CloverMama Afrika Trust, is a na-tionwide corporate socialinvestment programmethat empowers women tobecome self-sustainable,”says Vlok. “Our servicesare empowering Clover Ma-mas with skills trainingsuchas sewing, cookingandbaking, the bread ovenproject, food gardening,quilting and flower arrang-ing.

“We also provide themwith the necessary start-upequipment and material, aswell as continuous supportthrough regular monitor-ing and evaluation visits.”

She says it is a major chal-lenge to find new partnersto help the project with fi-nances, services or both.“The project has become fartoo big for Clover to manageon its own, and to maintainthe service we provide to-wards creating a better fu-ture for South Africans, weinvite other individuals and

corporates to join us on thisjourney of sustainability.”

Vlok says there are 465people who are permanent-ly employed by the CloverMamas. Most of them wereoncevolunteers earningon-ly stipends; now, throughthe Clover Mama self-helpprojects, they are earning abetter living.

“We have always beenpart of the Proudly SouthAfrican initiative, whichwe are very proud of... Thebuy-local concept is super,”says Vlok of PSA’s drive tostimulate South Africa’seconomy through gettingpeople to buy local goods.“We need to support ourown.”

Vlok says Clover MamaAfrika’s vision is to have aClover Mama in every com-munity in South Africa.“Currently we have 35 Ma-mas in 35 geographical re-gions,” she points out withpride.

A NOTORIOUS drug den inRetreat is still up for auc-

tion after a potential buyer waslinked to the home’s previousowners.

The infamous house at 44 SixthAvenue has been the centre of nu-merous drug raids, and was eventu-ally seized by the Asset ForfeitureUnit, says Eric Ntabazalila, Nation-al Prosecuting Authority (NPA)spokesperson.

The home was put on auction andawarded to the highest bidder – buta cross-check revealed that the per-son behind the bid was likely inleague with the building’s priorowners.

Ntabazalila says the house isback on auction, and it’s hoped areputable bidder will come forwardin short order. “We can confirmthat there are people bidding for thehouse at the moment, and we arehoping the house can be sold assoon as possible,” says Ntabazalila.

Southgate says he was delightedwhen he heard the house was final-ly to be sold. “We heard rumoursthat a close friend or relative mighthave bought the property,” he says,worrying that drug dealers will oneday terrorise the area from thehouse again.

“This is a major problem in thatcommunity, and residents have al-ways been concerned over the ac-tivities at the house.”

Indeed, despite the confiscationof the problem building, Sixth Ave-

nue remains a hive of illegal activi-ty, and people can still be seen mill-ing around the infamous den.

Colonel Noel Joseph, SteenbergPolice Station commander, admitsthat the house has caused “severalproblems” for the police. “Therehave been numerous raids in thepast, andwe still identify thathouseas being a problem in that area,”says Joseph.

The latest raid took last Tuesday;police arrested a man and a woman,aged 32 and 27, after confiscating anundisclosed amount of tik from thehouse.

“Residents reported that they didnot leave the house, which broughtdown the raid last week, but we willcontinue to monitor this house un-til it gets sold,” says Joseph.

Both suspects appeared in theWynberg Magistrate’s Court lastweek; their cases were postponedand they were remanded into custo-dy.

Numerous residents, who wishedto remain anonymous, spoke frank-ly to People’s Post about their fears.One woman says “drug sales” takeplace in the “open, for everyone tosee”.

“We cannot have this sort ofhouse damaging the community,because it’s not fair on our childrenand the residents living in this com-munity. We must get rid of thishouse.”

Another resident says “gangs” ofpeople linger on the street corners,“keeping a lookout” for police.

“They make it so obvious thatthey are dealing with illegal stuff,

and it does not take a genius to fig-ure out what they are up to.”

Another angry resident says thepeople associated with the houseappear completely at ease. “Theylook so casual, and most of them areso young. They don’t look con-cerned at all – it proves that thesedrug dealers are not afraid of thelaw any longer, because they getbailed out either the same day or

the next.”A concerned Southgate says he is

sending a detailed letter to parlia-ment about the sale of the house.

“We must be assured that whoev-er buys this house will not turn itinto yet another drugoutlet,” says South-gate.

Ntabazalila, mean-while, is firm that

the NPA will screen potential buy-ers to ensure they are “clean”.

“We are happy to confirm that theprocess is already underway, andit’s just a matter of identifying po-tential buyers,” Ntabazalila says.

The programme for the day in-cluded the recitation of poetrywritten by officers from each of thepolice stations – something Venterdescribed as “top-notch”.

Reverend Jeremy Jobling fromChrist’s Church Kenilworthopened the day with prayer, and

went on to introduce two survi-vors of abuse, who proceeded toshare their heartbreaking taleswith the audience. The PolmuscaPolice Choir had a few minutes tosing a couple of touching songs,and later, a few officers from thecluster also took to song with theirown rehearsed performance. Thecommitment and dedicationshowed by the officers entrancedFugard to such a degree that, shesaid, in her 17 years of experience,she has never seen such a high-cal-ibre event before. She went as faras saying she was positively“shocked” when she first saw theprogramme. The perception dur-ing the day left no-one in doubtthat the police have plenty of heartto go with their brawn, and thatthey take abuse of women and chil-dren seriously.

“I WAS FAMOUS for my knees. I haveknocked someone out with my knees… I

even think I felt a girl’s spine as I kneedher in the stomach once.”

It is somewhat hard to believe that thesewords come from a petite and beautiful blue-eyed blonde. But looks can be deceiving – Ol-ivia Jackson was rated the number one fe-male fighter in the world in 2009 by the WorldMuay Thai Federation, and took the title ofSouth African Muay Thai champion in 2004.

More recently, this relentless warrior hasstarted doing stunt work in movies, specialis-ing, of course, in fight scenes. On top of that,she’s a trainer and manager at The Armoury,a boxing club in Woodstock, and somehowstill finds the time to work as a model.

With over 10 years’ full-time professionaltraining in martial arts, and five of thosespent training and living in the heart of MuayThai in Thailand, Jackson is no stranger tobruises, cuts, black eyes and sexist remarksin an arena once dominated by masculinity.

“I got into Muay Thai because of modelling,just to keep fit,” she recalls. “I really enjoyedit, and started competing in fights – but even-tually it didn’t go down so well with the mod-elling, what with all of the cuts, bruises andblack eyes.”

This didn’t stop her, though, and beforelong she was starved for competition. “Thereweren’t really any female competitorsaround for me to fight in SA, so I went to Thai-land to compete professionally,” she ex-plains. Sexism is a constant presence in theworld of boxing, Jackson says, but it’s farworse in the male-dominated culture of SouthEast Asia.

“I realised that women fight for passion –men do it for money,” Jackson reveals.

“Women get paid much less for a fight.Women would get about 30 000 Thai Baht[around R7 000] for a fight, and men would getbetween 50 000 and 60 000 [R12 000 to R14 000].

“I started training at a world-famous gymin Thailand with people from all over theworld, but there was a certain part of the gymwhere no women were allowed – not eventheir toes.

“Women could also not climb over theropes when entering the ring; we had to gobeneath the bottom rope. But you get used totheir way of doing things.”

And Jackson certainly did, staying in Thai-land to train and fight for just over five years,becoming fluent in Thai and getting morethan 29 professional fights under her boxingbelt; she even fought at the Thai queen’sbirthday bash in front of more than 100 000people, and went on to win the match.

Jackson’s reputation spread, and she be-came known as “Sexy Muay Thai Olivia” tomillions of adoring Thai fans, while photosof her were splashed across Thai magazinesand newspapers.

But Jackson says people often misconceivewhat fighting is about, be it Muay Thai orboxing. Rather than being about aggressionand size, she says, the art of fighting is aboutfinding yourself and reaching your own lim-its.

“Never go into a fight and try to hurt some-one out of anger or aggression – that’s whenyou will get knocked down,” she warns. “Dur-ing a fight there is a lot of pressure, and the

only thing that crosses my mind is not to dis-appoint myself or my trainer.

“It is not about winning or losing, it isabout giving 120 percent.”

The other side to the nightmareANDRE BAKKES

SEVERAL lives hinged onone fateful second in March

2006.

One second Jannie Olivier wascycling with his son on Main Roadin Tokai; the next, he was lying inhis own blood. One second An-dries Zuidema was driving with afriend; with the next, he inadvert-ently took a life.

For Zuidema, however, the sec-ond that followed lasted five longyears. “My life is like a PVR decod-er, except that it’s been on pauseall this time,” states the 29-year-old.

He contacted People’s Post andoffered to share his experience af-ter this paper covered the Olivierfamily’s thoughts on his sentencelast Tuesday (“Cyclist’s killer getsslap on the wrist”).

The judge presiding over Olivi-er’s case effectively sentenced himto three years’ house arrest, com-munity service and a R5 000 fine,but the repercussions of that re-grettable second have haunted Ol-ivier ever since.

“It was the opening of a night-club in Claremont, and ja, we werethere quite late,” he remembers.“My friend had too much to drink,so I said that I would drive ushome.

“I took his car while he wassleeping in the passenger’s seat.Then, as I passed the Blue RouteMall turn-off on Main Road, I sawa highly visible group of cyclistson my side of the road. They werecycling next to each other, so Idrove in the middle of the road.

“About 100 metres after I passedthem I was still in the middle of theroad, and then suddenly I heard aloud noise. It was pitch dark, be-cause three street lights were outright at that spot. I was convincedthat someone had thrown a brickat the windshield.”

Zuidema decided to drive on, hesays, because he had just read ofa hijacking committed there threeweeks before by men who hadstopped a car by throwing a brickat it.

He says he inspected the carnear his friend’s house in TokaiRoad and saw that the damage tothe vehicle was far worse than hehad imagined. He hurried back tothe scene.

“If I knew I’d hit someone in thefirst place, I would’ve stopped –that I can guarantee!”

He was very concerned aboutOlivier, and kept asking whetherhe’d be OK, he says. “It’s a toughthing to go through,” he contin-ues. “The police questioned me,but they never took a statement. Iwas taken to a hospital so that theycould draw some blood and do a so-briety test.

“I’d had some drinks that night,but I wasn’t drunk.”

The judge later dropped chargesof drunken driving.

“Look,” Zuidema says, “thewhole episode was always verydifficult, but at the same time I’mrealistic. It happened, and I’mvery proud of how I handled it. Ialways stayed within the law anddid whatever people asked of me.

“I know how horrible it is to losea father at a young age,” he saysbefore adding that his own father

died when he was 11 years old. Zui-dema says he has always wantedto let the Olivier family know howsorry he is, but his lawyer advisedagainst it.

The man goes on to speak of hisfive years of frustration in court.“I think the court system in SouthAfrica is an absolute mess. Youand witnesses sit there, and no-body seems to know what’s goingon!”

The saga reached a crescendowhen the judge finally came to averdict in July this year, and nowZuidema is still paying for whathe’s done.

“My work hours are from 07:00to 17:00, and I must be back homeat 17:30. Breakthrough for blind literatureLILLIAN AMOS

THE League of the Friends ofthe Blind (‘the League’) wantsgovernment to throw itsweight behind the fight for atreaty that will allow blindpeople to share reading mate-rial across borders.

The League is an associatemember of the World Blind Un-ion (‘the Union’) which is cur-rently fighting to ease the copy-right restrictions on books.

The Union’s President, Mary-anne Diamond, said: “If this trea-ty is implemented millions of vis-ually impairedpeople all over theworld will benefit.

Braille books can not currently

be share and exchanged becauseof copyright, if this treaty is putinto progress, blind people wouldhave access to a variety of booktitles.

The League’s Executive Direc-tor, Phillip Bam, said the impor-tance of the proposed treaty can-not be underestimated.

“People living with a print dis-ability still have very limited ac-cess to books and other publishedworks. Only some 5% of pub-lishedbooksare evermadeacces-sible in richer countries and lessthan 1% in poorer ones.

“So this will definitely help thepeople of South Africa in a bigway.”

Sergil January (25), who wasshot five years ago and lost his

sight, is currently completingmatric. He said: “The treaty is go-ing to make an immense changein my life because currently Iwant to finish my school careerand it’s difficult when therearen’t books to help you.”

For now January’s sister helpshim learn and study by readingout loud to him from normalbooks.

“My sister reads for me then Irecord her from my phone. I tryto remember as much as I canand I also playback whatever Iforgot. She is a big help but thetreaty would help me to read thebooks myself, with braille.”

January is also trying to raisefunds to buy a laptop and Jawssoftware that would enable him

to scan pages onto the laptop,then the software “read” thewords of the document out loud.

The software is estimated to beapproximately R9 400.

Asking Principal FletcherFisher from Athlone School forthe blind how this would affectthe staff and students at theschool he said: “This treaty willbe a big help for our school andblind people in general. It willmake it easier for our learners tobe educated properly and it willalso make it easier for me and thestaff to teach thesechildren properly.”

Diamond said: “TheUnion is committed toa legally binding in-strument, a treaty. If it

is not a treaty, guidelines or vol-untary laws, we believe therewill be no real commitment tochange.

The treaty now lies in thehands of the World IntellectualProperty Organisation’s stand-ing committee on copyright andrelated rights.

The Union said it is very en-couraged by the progress made atthe mid-year meeting in Juneand is looking forward to thecommittee’s next meeting in No-vember.

THE Y.E.S. project of the Lavender HIll Develop-ment Trust, a public benefit organisation, was

launched on Monday 25 July at the Lavender HillHigh School.

The Y.E.S project, previously known as the “Lend ahand in Lavender Hill” project is mentored by the Wyn-berg Rotary Club.

The vision of the project, as the slogan, “Youth empow-erment through school”, says, is to bring an empoweringmind-set and along with that, social change to the schol-ars at the high school.

At the beginning of 2008 two sports fields were builton the school ground in the hope of enabling an attrac-tive school infrastructure. Now the Y.E.S. project wantsto ensure the sustainability of the sports fields.

Founder June Orsmond said: “It is important thatthese facilities last so that many generations of young-sters after this one, can benefit from the long term visionof the Y.E.S project.”

The project concentrates heavily on youth empower-ment. Orsmond said: “There are a lot of negative thingshappening around these children and they get pulled in-to it so easily. Gangsterism, drugs, teenage pregnancyand the list goes on.”

“Of 300 Children register for grade 8 only 80 make itto matric. We believe that by getting our young peopleoff the streets and involved in healthy, positive after-school activities, we will introduce them to a more struc-tured way of life and empower them to make better lifechoices and to take their new found confidence and self-worth forward into the community, slowly helping tobuild a better nation. It is reaching the youth of the na-tion where they have to be – at school.”

Orsmond also said the projecttakes existing infrastructure (theschool) and improve it.

Guests at the launch were enter-tained by Lavender Hill Highdancers and singers as well as theSouth African Navy Marimbaband.

Pangbourne College, a privateschool in England’s rugby boysteam, handed over R10 000 in fundsraised for the trust’s sustainabili-ty fund.

Malcolm Abrahams, a parent atthe school said: “Theboys fromtheschool generally come from well-off backgrounds. They were verytouched when they saw howthings are at Lavender High. Theythen decided to raise funds for theschool for them to share theirwealth in a way.”

Principal of Lavender Hill HighFaseeg Manie said: “There is defi-nitely a need at this school for so-cial change. The youth is at high risk of being caughtup in the illicit things happening in the community. Wewant the school to be a safe haven for these youngsters.The Y.E.S project is shaping them in a healthy, produc-tive and constructive way.”

According to Manie, the Department of Cultural Af-fairs and Sports have also played a major role becauseeveryday from Monday to Friday there are coaches tohelp the youngsters train.

Asking Manie how the project has helped the schoolso far he said: “I can see the change. Youngsters whoare involved in the project now come to school lookingforward to the day because they have a purpose and theyare excited.”

The Y.E.S project has four phases. The first was infra-structure, to build the fields and put the fences up, whichwas already achieved. The second is to sustain the R1.6million infrastructure investment. Phase 3 is to imple-ment the aims of Y.E.S. through key staff appointmentsand building upgrades. And phase 4 is to generate com-mercial income from the fields, and hopefully a futurepartnership with the community.

Orsmond said: “A lot of progess has been made withinfrastructure development. Lavender Hill High Schoolis now an inspiring green oasis with two beautiful newplaying fields. But we have to keep it green. So our focusat the moment is Phase 2, the creation of a strong sustain-ability fund.

There is currently a Y.E.S lease. A fantasy lease of asmall block of playing field where people can donatemoney to develop and maintain an enabling environ-ment at the High School. The amounts range from R100to R425 a month for 12 months or from R1 200 to R5 100once off. Farewell, friend BrianYOUR recent article on the sudden passing ofBrian Gaffney does justice to the person thatwe all knew and grew to respect (“Saluting alegend in his time”, People’s Post, 2 August).

Brian personified the SACOS slogan, “nonormal sport in an abnormal society”, and hiscontribution will long be rememberedamongst those who fought for change in ourcountry.

I had the privilege of meeting Brian morethan 20 years ago when I joined the Battswoodfamily, and have fond memories of the manybaseball meetings we held in our family homein Wynberg.

I was a rookie administrator at the time, butBrian and Eric Dorman nursed me along aswe prepared to embrace the long-awaited

change in our sporting environment.Brian will be remembered for the role he

played in shaping the lives of many sportsmen and women, and his legacy will serve asan example to the many talented young folkmaking their mark in our communities.

He has joined the Heavenly Hall of Fame,where others have gone before him. RichardBarnes, Sylvia and Arthur Jeftha, HaroldSimmons, Vernie Wessels, Vincent Baadjiesand Lennie Kleintjies are just some of thenames that come to mind.

He was a legend in his time and will be sore-ly missed.

Women’s worldTODAY on Women’s Day (9 August) and through-out August, South Africa will rightfully take timeout to honour and celebrate its women.

While International Women’s Day, celebrated on9 March, advocates on a global scale the rights ofwomen, South Africans will celebrate Women’sDay this week to honour the day thousands of wom-en marched on the Union Buildings in Pretoria in1956 to protest against the carrying of pass books,one of the oppressive requirements of the Apart-heid regime.

Since the birth of South Africa’s democracy in1994 the country has progressed in leaps andbounds in the advancement of women’s rights.

Today, many South African women can holdtheir heads high, and have much to be thankful forsecure and protected by progressive legislationthat promotes equality.

Yet at the same time women in many parts of thecountry continue – often silently and unnoticed –to live with the scars of physical, emotional andpsychological abuse.

For many women the threat of violence in theirhomes, and places of work remains very real.

But while we acknowledge these shortcomingsthis month let us also recognise the victories wonfor women; nationally and abroad.

Today we find women in top government posi-tions, within business and civil society, all servingto promote a diverse, robust economy thanks to thecontribution made by ever growing capable compe-tent, authoritative female professionals.

We are fortunate to live in a country where wom-en are encouraged to be individuals taking owner-ship of their own reproductive health, with govern-ment and the private sector coming to the party.

Ideally mothers should now re-enforce what ishappening within the broader society and teachtheir daughters principles of self-worth and theirsons the value of women, while fathers re-iteratethe same ideal.

With the world’s women taken care of, the futureseems bright.

The future success of our country is relative tothe growth and development of women.

‘Strike a woman, strike a rock’HANRIE BOSCH

WOMEN’S DAY marks a momentous fist onthe door of South Africa’s history – a fistheld high by the women who helped pulldown the pillars of apartheid.

The day has its roots in 1956, when 20 000women marched to the Union Buildings in Pre-toria to protest against the pass laws of the time,chanting the now-famous slogan “Strike a wom-an and you strike a rock”.

In honour of Women’s Day today, People’sPost took to the streets to find out what makesevery Capetonian woman special. FlorencePahlan, for one, feels women are the glue thatholds families and the nation together. “As awoman”, she says, “I am proud of who I am: amother, a daughter, a wife and a lady. I am veryspecial to my family and my two children. I lovewho I am, and every woman should”.

Rhoda Campbell says women are worth cele-brating because they bring joy to people’s lives.“We are the nurturers, the friends, the house-keepers and the always-on-call doctors to every-one.”

Louise Davies, meanwhile, feels women arestill battling for equality in a “man’s world” –a notion that prompted her to start her ownbusiness. “It’s best to work on your own andbe the maker of your own destiny,” she says.“Even though things have got better, it is stilla man’s world.”

Shakira Lagadien, on the other hand, feelsmen and women have become equals.

“Men and women have become the same inthe working environment; everything a mancan do, a woman can do – and just as well.”

But she also feels women should be lauded asindividuals and survivors: “We should also cel-ebrate and help all women who have survivedabuse and rape, or who are being abused.”

People’s Post found a heartening appreciationfor women in men, too. Rachel Nyoka doesn’tthink she’s worth celebrating, but her husband,

Tapiwa, has other ideas. “My wife is special– she always goes out of her way to supportme and our daughter,” Tapiwa says. “No oth-er woman on Earth could have done whatshe has done for me.”

He thinks men also deserve celebration,

though. “We were all made different for areason, and we are all special in our ownways. I feel that everyone should be celebrat-ed, not only women.”

Didi Nganduna, though, feels men couldnever hope to match a woman’s capabilities.

“Good women can make a good nation,family and community,” he says.

“My mom showed me right from wrong...Women are like bees: if you don’t treat themwell, they will sting – but if you do treat themwell, they will give you honey.”

BERESFORD WILLIAMS’ eleva-tion to the position of presidentof the Western Province CricketAssociation can be described asa natural progression of a man awho lives the game.

The 48-year-old Southern Sub-urbs resident last week took overthe reigns from Mohamed Ebra-him, whose double term of twoyears each ended at the associa-tion’s annual general meeting.

Western Province (WP) has beenSouth Africa’s most successfulcricket association since unifica-tion 20 years ago, and Williams iswell aware of the challenges thatawait him. “The association hasbeen very successful over the past

20 years,” Williams says. “The Co-bras are preparing for the Champi-ons League – they are the champi-ons of two of the countries’ majorcompetitions. So, as you can see, it’sa tough challenge ahead for me.”

Williams started playing cricketas a six-year-old; he was a buddingleft-arm spinner for St Augustineand later captained the WP schoolside before going on to excel asbowler and batsman for the old WPCricket Board.

Before he was elected to his newposition – unopposed – he served invarious capacities, and was also amember of the WP executive be-tween 2003 and 2008. He has alsoheld the position of chairperson ofSt Augustine since 1999, but he’shad to vacate this position after hiselection to his new post.

He honed his administrativeskills under the stalwarts of thenon-racial sport struggle of PercySonn and Norman Arendse. “I ad-mired people such as Hassan Howaand Sonn,” Williams says. “Theywere real principled people fromwhom I learnt a lot.”

Williams says he has met withWP’s staff, and is being introducedto the aspects of the organisation’sadministration. Mindful of the as-sociation’s success, Williams plansto work hard to do its legacy justice.

For one, he will be concentratingon providing space for a collectiveand strategic leadership, and he hasnumerous ideas around keepingthe association in winning form. Hewants to create opportunities foreverybody in the association to ex-cel, and is set on ensuring financial

stability, all with the aim of helpingthe organisation further transforminto a dynamic, open-minded struc-ture.

Thinking outside the bounds ofthe association, Williams wants torenew a relationship with JAG toenhance amateur cricket, and re-main one of the leaders of amateurcricket in the country.

“I am committed and passionateabout serving the organisation, andultimately strive to enhance thewonderful achievements made todate,” he says. “As a leader the onlyway to get what you want is by help-ing enough people get what theywant first.

“As Sir Winston Churchill oncesaid, ‘We make a living by what weget; we make a life by what wegive.’”

THE coming weekend will see thekick-off of the 2011-2012 Premier Soc-cer League (PSL), and both of CapeTown’s teams – Ajax Cape Town andEngenSantos –aregearingup for theirfirst matches.

After pre-season training, severalwarm-up matches and the arrival and de-parture of a number of players at bothclubs, the time to commence their titlechallenges has come.
