Van Rooyen admits that studying while holding down a full-time job has been a big challenge. He credits his success to sur- rounding himself with “positive people” and having a strong support system. “It was difficult working and studying part-time, but what kept me going was my firm belief in God and the support I received from my family. “My grandfather knew I was stubborn, from a very young age already – and when I get told I can’t do it, I try even harder to prove that I can do it.” In 2011 his determination paid off when he graduated from UWC with his LLB degree and in 2013 he hit the law books again when he did a six months’ legal practical training certificate at the University of Cape Town. He describes himself as a “champi- on for the underdog”, one who hates to see injustices done to his fellow man. “Law is applicable everywhere and for me the aspect of protecting the human rights of others has always been an interesting one.” Advocate Van Rooyen is considering his next step. “I would love to become part of the legal services in the police and who knows, I might even end up at the national prosecut- ing authority!” Van Rooyen laughs when asked whether he would ever cross over to become a defence attorney. He says there are lots of people who have been wrongfully accused and they too have the right to seek legal counsel – once again appealing to his sense of wronging the right. The plight of the downtrodden is a strong motivation for Van Rooyen – and with the support of his loving family who knows where his sense of protecting the rights of the underdog will take this ambitious and just-minded legal eagle . . . After all, eagles are known for soaring to great heights.

From clerk to lawyerLIEZL BENJAMIN

His grandfather predicted that a youngAthlone police clerkwould one day be-come a lawyer. And recently that pre-

diction came true when Russel van Rooyenwas admitted as an advocate in the CapeHigh Court.

Van Rooyen (32), who hails from Sher-wood Park in Manenberg, attended Wyn-berg Boys High and after he matriculatedthere were many careers that piqued his in-terest, but in the end his grandfather’s pre-diction and a cousin who was already a law-yer, won him over to law.

Van Rooyen admits that studying whileholding down a full-time job has been a bigchallenge. He credits his success to sur-roundinghimselfwith “positive people” andhaving a strong support system.

“It was difficult working and studyingpart-time, but what kept me going was myfirm belief in God and the support I receivedfrom my family.

MUSIC SCHOOLOPENING IN LANSDOWNE

X1Q4QHX5-QK260515

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Womenand Children has raised the alarm

around escalating levels of violence againstchildren. The Centre attributes the higher levels of

violence to an increase in violence in gener-al, with children being caught in the cross-wire – be it gang-related or domestic vio-lence.“Despite all of the awareness raised, at

least three children that we know of havegone missing over the past two weeks. Thesystem is broken and sadly children, ourmost vulnerable members of society, areeasy targets for predators,” says ShaheemaMcLeod, director of the Centre.

MotivateUsing Child Protection Week, which is thisweek, the Centre launched an anonymouspostcard campaign, aimed at exploring themotivation for violence. The campaign, named “I deserve it”, tasked 600Grade 10 pu-pils to describe the circumstances thatwould warrant domestic violence. Respons-es varied, from the unacceptability of vio-lence, nomatter the situation, to violence be-ing deserved when dinner wasn’t ready oran expected (but unconfirmed) affair hadtaken place.McLeod says they are not surprised by the

findings of the campaign. She says oftenthere is a disconnect between what peopleknow to be wrong and how they behave.“Our findings revealed that regardless of

the community and the school, the pupil re-sponses very much depended on the envi-ronment in which the child had beenraised.”Stories of child abuse are commonplace in

South Africa; one out of four children areabused daily and it has been estimated thata child goes missing every five hours. De-spite the country’s child protection laws, policies and programmes, high levels ofabuse and violence are reported on a dailybasis.

Damage“Children are not only affected when theythemselves are the victims of violence – ex-posure to violence, for example towards themother, can be seriously damaging to theiremotional psyche,” says Zeenat Osman, child counsellor at the Centre.“Children who have witnessed domestic

violence may experience a variety of emo-tions ranging from guilt to helplessness, which in turn can lead to behavioural prob-lems or social difficulties. The postcard cam-paign was very insightful in this regard; itprovidedanopportunity to explore the rami-fications of violence through an anonymousplatform.”

Help for abuseGrade 10 pupils from Sea Point High School,Leadership College, Gugulethu Comprehen-sive SecondarySchool andNormanHenshil-wood High School took part in the postcardcampaign.Established in Manenberg in 1999, the

Centre helps victims of violence and abuse.Typical problems faced by the children

who visit the Centre include abuse, neglect, displacement, behavioural problems, sub-stance abuse and difficulties at school.

Abuse ‘seriouslydamages kids’

Children’sthoughts onviolenceLocal Grade 10 pupils took part in ananonymous postcard campaign by theSaartjie Baartman Centre for Womenand Children to explore the motiva-tion for violence. The 600 pupils from Sea Point High

School, Leadership College, Gugulet-hu Comprehensive Secondary Schooland Norman Henshilwood HighSchool gave reasons for the use of vio-lence.

Reasons for violence. When I am impundent and out ofline and get smacked for it.. When someone sexually harassesme.. My mother deserves it when my fa-ther hits her.. When men smack my bum becauseI am dressed inappropriately.. In Islam thehusbandcanhit hiswifeonly if she disobeys more than thrice. He’s not allowed to hit her in her face.

Reasons against abuse.Womenshouldnot bebeaten,wheth-er they are at fault or not. Everyonemakes mistakes. Women do not de-serve to be injured for a silly mistakelike burning food. Men are just pettysometimes.. A women should not be beaten, ourConstitution andBill of Rights says so.Everyone is equal, no-one is perfect,we allmakemistakes.Women deserverespect, love and care and not to bebeaten.. When a woman does somethingwrong for her husband, they shouldtalk about it and not fight about it.. No one deserves to be beaten. It isnot right.

Police pick up the ball inmatch against crimeSeven police stations and 28 sports teamswill participate in a tournament aimed atcombating crime.NGOSportAgainst Crime and theMitch-

ell’s Plain police are holding a seven-a-sidenetball and soccer tournament on Satur-day. About 300 children will participate.Steenberg, Grassy Park, Mitchell’s

Plain, Lentegeur, Lansdowne, Athlone andPhilippi police stations will make up twou.14 soccer teams and two u.14 netballteams each.Strandfontein will not be participating.Matches will last 10 minutes without

changing sides.Cluster commander Major-General

AbrahamGoss says this is aboutmore thanjust building relationships.“Yes, we are giving the children an op-

portunity to play against children fromother areas but it is also to keep them busyand channel their energy in the right direc-tion.Wewant them to get involved in sportrather than a life of crime,” he says.Sport Against Crime president Vincent

Daniels says he has a team dedicated tofinding the areas worst affected by gang-sterism and crime.“We send people out to find themost dan-

gerous areas and then we partner with po-lice to come up with a solution. We noticethat the children are left to their own devi-ces and are being used by the drug dealersto do their dirty work,” he says. “Thesechildren come from a disadvantaged back-ground and are easy targets.”Daniels says he approaches police clus-

ter commanders and asks for their supportbefore moving forward. The organisationis a registered non-governmental organisa-tion and was started 28 years ago.

His plan is to extend the children’s expert-ise in the sport as they grow.“There is lots of talent in Cape Town. We

want to bring teams from all over the worldto share their knowledge and play against thecluster teams in friendly matches,” he says.Goss says the tournament is also about

gaining the confidence of the youngsters.“With the recent case of child molestation

going to court we need to train the childrento talk. Theymustknow that it is okay to comeand report crime to the police,” he says. Hebelieves the police’s involvement will proofthat they support the community.Daniels encourages residents to get in-

volved with the organisation. For more infor-mation call him on 082 865 1144.V The tournament will be held at Rocklands High Schoolin Eisleben Road, Mitchell’s Plain from 10:00 to 15:00.

Indian cyclist visits SA,94th country on world tripMARK WARD

A Cape Town medical doctor, AmitGhosh, has teamed up with Indian ad-

venturer-cyclist Somen Debnath.Ghosh (29) met Debnath, who hails from

the province of Bengal, three weeks ago atthe Shri SivaAalayamHinduTemple in Ry-lands.

Debnath is on an around-the-world bicy-cle tour in aid of HIV/Aids awareness. Hereached South Africa earlier this year – the94th country on his trip. He has already cy-cled 112 600km.

“My goal is to travel 200 000km and visit191 countries, meeting 20 million people bythe end of 2020,” says Debnath.

“From 2009 to 2012, I cycled across Eu-rope. I have travelled in 10 countries in theMiddle East while South Africa is the 10thAfrican country I have visited.

While Ghosh is not joining Debnath onhis journeys, hewill behelping to documentthe adventurer’s travel stories.

“Aftermy first meetingwith Somen I wasintrigued by his determination. I’m fromBengali decent and share his culture. Myfamily has strong roots in India. Becausehis natural eloquence is in Bengali I wantto assist him to create his stories inEnglish. We also share a common vision about advo-cacy around HIV/Aids,” says Ghosh.

Debnath was recently the guest of JPSmith, mayoral committee member forsafety and security. Debnath gave an Indianflag to the City at a ceremony at the Newl-ands cricket ground. It was received byCape Cobras player Mthokozisi Shezi.

Smith jokingly referred to Debnath as be-ing “nuts” for his travels. “One can onlyhaveadmiration for this braveyoungman,”said Smith.

Somen Debnath from India is riding his bike across the world and had a stop in Cape Town. From left are Donny Jurgens (City of Cape Town sport and recreation department), MthokozisiShezi (Nashua Cape Cobras player), Beresford Williams (president of WP Cricket Association),Debnath, JP Smith (mayoral committee member for safety and security) and Cape Town medicaldoctor Amit Ghosh.

The more chefs themerrier in AthloneAfter a much needed makeover the Con-sumer Studies classroom at GarlandaleHighSchool inAthlone is nowall ready, set, bake! This is due to an upgrade worth R50 000

facilitated by GrandWest. The improvedclassroom was opened last Thursday. The Consumer Studies classroom has not

been upgraded since the school’s inceptionin 1982, and was in need of new equipmentand facilities to better accommodate themore than 105 pupils who take ConsumerStudies.According to Heidi Edson, group socio-

economic development manager at Sun In-ternational’s GrandWest, the renovation ofthe classroom included thepurchase and in-stallation of stoves, microwave ovens, afreezer, new under-sink cupboards, newsmall appliances and utensils and a newfridge.“We have also installed a modern demon-

stration table with an overhead mirror tooffer a better platform for the teacher todemonstratemethods and procedures to pu-pils during classes. Various aesthetic im-provements have also been made to theclassroom, including a fresh coat of paint, new taps on the sinks and new counter-tops,” she says.Work at the school was carried out by an

enthusiastic team of GrandWest suppliersand service providers.Garlandale High School is one of 10

schools benefitting from Sun Internation-al’s nationwide schools renovations pro-gramme this year. The programme is fo-cused on upgrading hospitality classroomsat schools in underprivileged communitiesto equip pupils for pursuing further studiesand a career in the hospitality sector. Thissector, like many sectors, is faced with ashortage of appropriate and qualified skills.Garlandale High School is situated close

to the Athlone CBD, and currently has 852pupils. The majority of pupils come frompoverty-stricken communities. In manycases, according to the school’s principal,Dawn Crowie, the school is the only stablefactor in the lives of the children.“It is our mission to ensure that all of our

pupils receive the best education possibleas we believe that education is the only ve-hicle out of these circumstances. Often ourpupils express the desire to take ConsumerStudies as a subject because it allows themto enter the field of hospitality,” he says.

Grade 12 pupils from Garlandale High Schoolhad tremendous fun pitting their culinaryskills against each other in the Sun Master-chef competition which was staged in thenew Consumer Studies classroom to celebrateits grand opening. Opportunity to learn the language of the futureEver wanted to list “coding” as a skill youhave mastered? Africa Code Week is a one-of-kind educational initiative that will be pi-loted at the Cape Town Science Centre fromSaturday to Thursday next week. The event will provide an opportunity for

free workshops for educators and free cod-ing (computer programming) workshops forchildren between the ages of 8 and 11 years.Coding is the literacy of the digital age and

the best way for young children to become

fluent is to learn and play. While technologyis transforming education and learnerslearn how to use it, the reality is that theyrarely learnhow itworks.Asa language cod-ing helpsmake sense of how thingswork, ex-plores ideas and how to make things. Everyinteraction between humans and computersis governed by code. Programming is there-fore fundamental to the understanding ofhow technology works.“Importantly, coding contributes to devel-

oping key skills in mathematics and prob-lem-solving in the classroom environment. It also encourages teamwork and analyticalthinking, all essential 21st century skills forour youth,” says Julie Cleverdon, director ofthe Science Centre. In preparation for Africa Code Week, the

Centre is calling on all teachers, parents, students, businesses, NGOs and educationalinstitutions to take up the opportunity forfree workshops, which will prepare them to

implement coding classes for children. The train-the-trainer workshop is two

hours long and will take place on Saturdayand Sunday at the Science Centre. Free one-hour coding workshops for children willtake place between 1 and 4 June. For more information call Leigh on

The new Ford B-Max, which isscheduled for launch in South

Africa in the third quarter of thisyear, features a unique design, competitive fuel economy and newtechnology, making it among themost advanced compact cars, ac-cording to a statement by FordMo-tor Company of Southern Africa.“The Ford B-Max really challen-

ges traditional small car think-ing,” says Tracey Delate, generalmarketing manager at Ford. “Itsingenious design opens the doors –quite literally – to exciting newideas about what’s possible with acompact vehicle.”Based on Ford’s global B-car

platform – shared with the highlysuccessful new Fiesta – the B-Maxrepresents the company’s visionfor a premium compact multi-ac-tivity vehicle (MAV), providingspace and versatility in a stylishexterior. The B-Max’s Ford Easy Access

Door System provides unobstruct-

ed entry and exit with hinged frontdoors and pillarless rear slidingdoors, integrating the central bodypillars into the doors rather thanit being part of the bodyshell itself. When both front and rear doors

are open there is easy access to theinterior, with a huge, clear aper-ture of 1.5 metres wide, making itsignificantly easier to enter or exitthe rear seats, attend to children inchild seats, or load and unloadshopping. The flexible seating system fea-

tures 60/40 split rear seats that canbe folded flat with a simple “one-hand, one-motion” mechanism.Ford engineers developed innova-tive solutions to ensure the B-Maxdelivers the same outstanding lev-els of crash protection as cars witha more conventional structure. This new model also achieves

good fuel economy and low CO2

emissions.Although the full line-up will on-

ly be revealed at the launch, the

rangewill include the 1.0-litre FordEcoBoost petrol engine, which haswon the International Engin of theYear award three times. The B-Max offers a wide range of

Ford’s latest smart technologies, including Ford’s voice-activatedin-car connectivity system. It is al-so equipped with Ford MyKeyfunctionality, an auto dimmingrearview mirror and full-lengthpanoramic roof.B-Max is true to the Ford fun-to-

drive brand and features torquevectoring control for superior trac-tion and cornering. The car offersagility and manoeuvrability de-signed for the cut and thrust of citydriving.

DANCE

He brings loveof Bollywoodcloser to homeLOUISA STEYL

@LouNotes

Cape Town performance troupeTaare is bringing Bollywood to

your doorstep.Founded by Athlone’s Ahneesh

Valodia, Taare aims to promote andpreserve the Indian arts in “an ori-ginal and creative manner”.ByusingBollywood song anddan-

ce, Ahneesh says they make Indianarts more accessible or appealing toaudiences as well as the troupe’sdancers, helping them maintain alink to Indian culture and traditi-ons.Ahneesh explains that the term

“Bollywood” refers to both traditio-nal andmodern Indian dance styles.“It’s actually any style you can

thinkof,” he says, adding: “It’smorethe creative use of different dancestyles.”Ahneesh started dancingwhenhe

was eight years old and says heknew then already that that’s whathe wanted to do for the rest of hislife. His plan was to pursue formal

training after matric, but his“health started acting up”.Although he was diagnosed with

muscular dystrophy, a degenerati-ve muscle disease, Ahneesh perfor-med asmuch as possible in his teenswhile he still could, until it got to a pointwhe-re heneeded to swop the stage for awheelcha-ir.Dancing had become the centre of his life

though and he couldn’t give up on hisdreams, so he decided to switch performingfor teaching and choreography.

Knowing that “there is a way aroundthings” is what helped Ahneesh cope. Bystarting the troupe, he gets to help otherdancers achieve their dreams.Bollywood has always been Ahneesh’s

first love. As a child he used to watch Bol-lywoodmovies and try the dances himself. While he’s a classically trained dancer, hisBollywood choreography is self-taught.He started spreading the word about

starting a troupe in 2012 and contacteddancers that he knew were not activelyperforming at the time. With word of mouth Taare grew and the

rest, as they say, is history. In the beginning, Taare would ask dan-

cers to book spaces at UCT residences forrehearsals. Today, however, they have aset venue atRustenbergGirls’HighSchoolwhere they rehearse every Saturday from10:00 to 12:00 with extra rehearsals whenthey are preparing for a performance.Ahneesh says the troupe of 30 dancers

is made up of matriculants, students andprofessionals. “They come from all walksof life.”He says the audition process is open to

anyone, with no previous dance experien-ce necessary.Taare performs a few times amonth and

the group performs its own productionsalong with shows at charity, communityor corporate events.Ahneesh says, to his knowledge, Taare

is the only Bollywood dance troupe in Ca-pe Town. While there are Indian danceschools, Taare operates more like a dancecompany. The group runs on a non-profit basis, re-

lying on sponsorships and donations. Atthe moment, they are specifically lookingfor someone to help with their social me-dia management.Ahneesh explains that his troupe exists

to provide a service to the community. They provide a platform for dancers toma-ture their talents and bring Indian danceto a wide range of audiences.V Visit www.taare.co.za or www.facebook.com/TaareDance for more information about Taare andits shows, to arrange an audition or to find out abouthelping the troupe in any way.

Buckland’s hit now onOne of the sold-out hit productions at last ye-ar’s National Arts Festival in Graham-stown,Tobacco, and theharmful effects there-of, is on stage at the Baxter Flipside until Sa-turday 13 June.Directed by Sylvaine Strike and starring

AndrewBuckland, with ahaunting guest ap-pearance by Toni Morkel, the play tells thestory of Ivan, who is not a professor, but istold by hiswife to give a lecture on the harm-ful effects of tobacco, even though he is him-self a small smoker. What follows is not so much a lecture, as

an unfolding of the often hilarious and poig-nant journey of a man trying to be heard forthe first time. The production is an adaptation of Anton

Chekhov’s monologue “On the harmful ef-

fects of tobacco”, re-imagined, in cut-uptechnique, in collaboration with Franz Kaf-ka, Edward Lear, Andre Breton, amongstothers. The creative team is made up of William

Harding (last seen at the Baxter in Strike’sproduction of The miser in 2013), who is res-ponsible for the adaptation, with costumedesign by Strike and set design by Chen Na-kar.V Tickets cost R120 (matinees and Baxter Mondays),R130 (Tuesday to Thursday) and R150 on Fridays andSaturdays from Computicket.
