One of the most common responses Texas Lottery winners give when asked what advice they have for other players is, “Keep trying; people really do win!” And they’re right. Texas Lottery play- ers have claimed approximately $25 billion in winnings since the first ticket was sold in 1992. Here are a few of their stories. On June 5, Gary W. Prenzler of Victoria claimed the first of three new Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 trucks available in the Harley-Davidson ® , Bucks & Trucks Scratch-Off game. “I saw the ticket and scratched off an area . . . and that’s when I saw that it said ‘F-150,’” said Prenzler of the ticket he purchased at the Speedy Stop located at 3302 Sam Houston in Victoria. “I had to pick myself up from the floor.” Just a few days later, the members of the LGroup Managed Trust of Lubbock traveled to Austin to claim $20.9 million, the cash value option of the $36 million Lotto Texas ® jack- pot drawing held on April 29. One of the group’s members, Sharla Pierce, said, “I’m buy- ing a new house. This will give our family lots more room than we have now. I also plan to save for my kids’ college educations.” The LGroup Managed Trust purchased their ticket at the 7-Eleven located at 3402 98th St. in Lubbock. Four days after the Lotto Texas claim, Martha L. Cuellar of El Paso claimed the $94 million Mega Millions ® jackpot from the May 16 drawing. “I’m going to buy a house and a car, and take care of my son and daughter and the rest of my family,” said Cuellar. “And my son wants to go to medical school. . . . This should make that a lot easier!” Cuellar purchased her ticket at the Good Time Store located at 6390 Alameda Ave. in El Paso. One of the most common responses Texas Lottery winners give when asked what advice they have for other players is, “Keep trying; people really do win!” And they’re right. Texas Lottery play-ers have claimed approximately $25 billion in winnings since the first ticket was sold in 1992. Here are a few of their stories.

On June 5, Gary W. Prenzler of Victoria claimed the first of three new Ford Harley-Davidson™ F-150 trucks available in the Harley-Davidson®, Bucks & Trucks Scratch-Off game.

“I saw the ticket and scratched off an area . . . and that’s when I saw that it said ‘F-150,’” said Prenzler of the ticket

he purchased at the Speedy Stop located at 3302 Sam Houston in Victoria. “I had

to pick myself up from the floor.”

Just a few days later, the members of the LGroup Managed Trust of Lubbock traveled to Austin to claim

$20.9 million, the cash value option of the $36 million Lotto Texas® jack-

pot drawing held on April 29. One of the group’s members, Sharla Pierce, said, “I’m buy-

ing a new house. This will give our family lots more room than we have now. I also plan to save for my kids’ college educations.” The LGroup Managed Trust purchased their ticket at the 7-Eleven located at 3402 98th St. in Lubbock.

Four days after the Lotto Texas claim, Martha L. Cuellar of El Paso claimed the $94 million Mega Millions® jackpot from the May 16 drawing. “I’m going to buy a house and a car, and take care of my son and daughter and the rest of my family,” said Cuellar. “And my son wants to go to medical school. . . . This should make that a lot easier!” Cuellar purchased her ticket at the Good Time Store located at 6390 Alameda Ave. in El Paso.

Originally from California, T. J. Petrie, now of Leander, won American Idol ™ – the Texas Lottery®

version, anyway. Petrie found she didn’t have to stay in California to win a dream prize when she became the 10th recipient to claim $20,000, the top prize for the Texas Lottery American Idol scratch game.

“This is the largest amount I’ve ever won in my life,” said Petrie. “I bought three of the American Idol scratch games and didn’t realize I had won anything at first.”

Petrie told Texas Lottery officials she has already made plans for her winnings. “I want to buy a new truck and get new glasses

for my daughter,” she said. “This was a way-huge surprise and blessing. For a single mom, it was a really cool experience.”

Petrie bought her winning ticket from the Quix #403 store located at 707 South Hwy. 183 in Leander.

It wasn’t the sort of lucky break that one would normally hope for, but Donell Campbell of Dallas got lucky with an Ace of Spades Scratch-Off ticket—after fracturing one of his fingers.

“I was on my way to Parkland Hospital because I fell off a ladder and fractured my little finger,” Campbell said. “When I took out my wallet to find my insurance card, I realized I had a ticket and scratched it.” Campbell uncovered a $1,000 prize on the Ace of Spades ticket!

Campbell said he planned to use his prize money to pay his hospital bill and buy new eyeglasses. He bought his lucky ticket at the Save-Way Food Store located at 1562 E. Ann Arbor Ave. in Dallas.

Pac-Man™, the dot- and ghost-gobbling arcade game character, has been featured on a Texas Lottery Scratch-Off ticket since last May. Jody Davis of Sherman gobbled up a $1,000 prize from a Pac-Man ticket she purchased in June at Happy Stop, located at 300 Charlie St. in Whitesboro.

Davis was buying Lotto Texas® tickets when she spotted the Pac-Man ticket and thought, “What the heck,” and bought $10 worth of Pac-Man tickets. Davis went out to her car and scratched the tickets, then went back inside the store to confirm that she had indeed uncovered a prize.

“She checked it and said ‘Way to go, girl. You just won $1,000!’ We did a high five!” said Davis.

Davis planned to use her winnings to redecorate her guest bedroom.

Sandra D. Brown of Arlington found what she thought was a “lucky penny” on the pavement at a gas station on her lunch break one day in July. That same day, Brown purchased a Wild 8’s Scratch-Off at JR’s Food Mart at 1141 W. Division in Arlington. She later used her lucky penny to scratch the Wild 8’s ticket, uncovering an $800 prize. It was a lucky penny, indeed!

Brown and her husband used the winnings to go on a “special date” and to pay the expenses for a ceremony to renew their wedding vows. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Joseph E. Dyson of Harker Heights had won prizes on lottery tickets in the past, but nothing

quite like the $10,000 prize he won from a $250,000 Riches ticket!

“I had played World Poker Tour® $100,000 Texas Hold ‘Em™ and won $20,” Dyson said. “I cashed it in and asked the clerk what other $10 ticket they had.” The clerk pointed to the $250,000 Riches ticket, so Dyson bought it.

Dyson scratched his $250,000 Riches ticket in his car. He said, “When I saw the ‘10x’ symbol I thought I’d won $10 or $20, because I’ve done so many other times. When I scratched the $10,000 amount, I went back in the store to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. What a rush!”

Dyson planned to give the winnings to his wife. “She has plans for it,” he said. Dyson bought the ticket at Shorty’s Convenient Store located at 908 Terrace Dr. in Killeen.

“I just felt lucky,” answered Cynthia Caimanque when asked how she picked the two Scratch-Off tickets that

brought her a total of $9,500 in winnings. Caimanque, of Brownsville, stopped at Las Guera’s, Inc., located at 1031-C Elizabeth St. in Brownsville, to buy her tickets.

“I was with my mom, and I got so excited, I started jumping up and down,” Caimanque said. “She

wanted to know what was wrong with me, and I yelled, ‘I won, I won!’” Caimanque had scratched off a

$7,500 prize on a Bonus Break The Bank ticket, and a $2,000 prize on a Monthly Bonus ticket!

Caimanque said she would use her winnings to pay off bills, pay for school, and go to Las Vegas.

Sandra Parker of Austin used the numbers from her old mailing address, 722, when she bought her Pick 3™ tickets for the May 26 day drawing. “I played it two ways,” Parker said. “I played 2-7-2 for $2, and 7-2-2 for $1 in Exact or Any Order.”

Parker later stopped by another store to inquire about the winning numbers for that date. “The cashier didn’t know, so he pulled the numbers up and showed them to me,” she said. The numbers drawn were 2-7-2, meaning that Parker’s Pick 3 ticket was worth $660! “I screamed and jumped for joy,” Parker said. “What a way to start my summer vacation!”

Parker planned to use the winnings for car repair and to take her daughter to Six Flags Over Texas. “We are going to stay all day and ride all the rides!” Parker said.

Parker bought her ticket at Stop-N-Go #02169 located at 4602 E. Stassney Ln. in Austin.
