People of the Civil War Abraham Lincoln - What was his role during the Civil War? (He was President of the United States/the Union during the Civil War.) a. First Inaugural Address - What did he say about slavery in the south? (Assured southerners that slavery was lawful where it existed.) What did he say about secession? (He made the case that states could not secede and that the Union must be preserved.) b. The Emancipation Proclamation - When was it read? (January 1, 1863) What was it supposed to do? (It was supposed to free slaves only in Confederate-controlled areas.) Why did it not work? (Union forces were unable to reach those Confederate areas to enforce the proclamation.) c. Gettysburg Address (p. 508) - What did he express in the speech? (Honored UNION soldiers who had given their lives for freedom and unity.) Where did he think government should come from? (Believed in a government by the people and for the people.) d. Second Inaugural Address (p. 509)- What did he recall in this speech? (Talked about spirit of healing the nation’s wounds at a time when the end of the war was within sight.) What did he urge citizens to do? (He focused on reunification and NOT punishment of the South for the war.)
