Canal of the Mountain King

The fulfillment of a dream more than a hundred years old, Norway has approved plans for the world’s first shipping tunnel to be drilled through the mountains of the Stad Peninsula on the western coast. This rocky finger of land juts out into danger-ous seas, where the Norwegian and North seas meet, resulting in very treacherous weather and wave conditions. Ships often have to wait days for the stormy seas to settle before they can embark on their slow trip around the cape. The mile long tunnel, which will be constructed at the peninsula’s thinnest point, where it con-

nects to the mainland, will be large enough to allow a ship the size of a Hurtigruten Coast Steamer or the average cargo ship to slip through safely. Walkways will be built on either side of the canal to facilitate maintenance and emergency evacuations. The $330 million project will kick off in 2022 and is expected to take three to four years to complete.

Have you heard of the Kavli Prize?

While you may be familiar with the Nobel Peace Prize awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Com-mittee, there is a newer, less-known prize in the news. The Kavli Prize recognizes scientific creativ-ity and celebrates outstanding achievements in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience, and neuro-science.

Established by Fred Kavli who was born on a small farm in Eresfjord, Norway, Kavli later moved to California. He was a physicist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. His lifelong fascination with sci-ence led him to establish the U.S.-based Kavli Foundation in 2005. Since 2008, awards have gone to 54 scientists from thirteen countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany,

Austria, France, Netherlands, Lithuania, Japan, Norway, Russia, Czechia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Nominations for The Kavli Prize open this year September 1 and close on December 1, 2021. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters will award three prizes in 2022, using the recommendations of independent committees for each field. Norway’s Royal Family presides over a ceremony held in Oslo, where prize recipients receive a gold medal, scroll and cash equivalent to one million US dollars. Message in a Bottle Washes up in Norway

On a family holiday in England, a 10-year-old Derbyshire girl named Lilly sent a message in a bottle out to sea. To her delight, it was found on a beach near Kragerø, Norway.

The message was written on a piece of kitchen paper and read “7. July 2020 Dear whoever you are – please, if you find this please post online. I’m from Long Eaton, 10 years old and my name is Lilly.” She and her mother launched the bottle from Chapel St. Leonards in Lincolnshire. In talks about how she came up with the idea, she said, “I think it was just something to do…the arcades were shut and there was nothing really to do...” Harald Christiansen, a friend of the woman who found the bottle, was able to track down Lilly and her mother via a community Facebook group; he was impressed by “the power of the internet.” Lilly and her mother loved receiving a reply and were thrilled that it had been found.

a little in English…

The Munch Museum is finally finished

The Munch Museum in Oslo was able to take over their new building in Bjørvika on Friday. Consequently, it is ready to start moving in. The channel NRK first wrote about the matter.

The museum is scheduled to open in the fall. The opening has been postponed several times. Among other things, there were problems with an air conditioning system. But in Janu-ary it was announced that the issue had been solved.

“So, as of today, it is Munch who has formally built the muse-um and will fill it with content. There is still some work left to do before the building is finished. But now we can gradually move our capable employees in,” Stein Olav Henrichsen said to news agency NTB. He is the director of the Munch Museum.

Henrichsen says on behalf of his 150 employ-ees that he is both proud and pleased. They are ready to get started preparing everything for this fall's opening.

“This is a major milestone in Munch history. And an important step on the way to the goal, which is to open a new, fantastic, large and beautiful museum building for the public.”

He says they will mark the handover with an alcohol-free toast to Edvard Munch. The artist gave all his art to the mu-nicipality after his death. That's how he made it accessible to the whole world.

If everything goes according to plan, the new Munch Muse-um can open in the fall, Henrichsen says.

“When we open to the public, we will have a really big cele-bration. It will be for everyone who wants to join in cele-brating our great artist and the new fantastic Munch [Museum] in Bjørvika.”

The museum will have 13 floors. There will be a roof terrace, bar and mezzanine on top. From the ninth floor and upwards, the building slopes 20 degrees.

Altogether, the building will contain the municipality's collec-tion of Munch's works. There are about 28,000 original works by the artist. In addition, the [Rolf] Stenersen collection will be in the museum.

litt på norsk...

Munchmuseet er endelig ferdig

Munchmuseet i Oslo kunne fredag ta over den nye bygningen i Bjørvika.

FOUNDATION UPDATE

Greetings! My name is Emily Stark and I started at Sons of Norway in May as the Founda-tion Development Manager. I oversee the operations of the foundations and manage our fundraising efforts. Many of you have worked with Connie O'Brien in the past and she's still heavily involved with the Foundation but I'm on board to take a little work off her (already very full) plate. I came to the Sons of Norway Foundation about a month ago from St. Catherine University, where my most recent role was as a Major Gift Officer. Prior to work-ing there, I worked in the Community Relations field for a few different companies in An-

chorage, AK. I'm excited to visit as many lodges as possible and spread the word about how the Sons of Norway Foundation can be a resource to lodges and individuals.

It has been a very busy and exciting first few months on the job. We recently finalized our 2021 scholarship awards and will be giving out $110,000 in awards. $93,669 will go to students studying in the United States and $15,000 will go to students studying abroad in Norway. Applications for 2022 scholarships will begin October 1, 2021. You can find descriptions of all the scholarships we offer on our website: https://www.sofn.com/foundation/

scholarships/.

PLAY LIKE A VIKING When metal detectorist Mick Bott unearthed dozens of small lead objects at the site of a 10th century Viking encampment in Lincolnshire, England, he figured they were just weights. However, experts determined he had actually discovered the oldest known complete set of gaming pieces for the ancient Viking board game Hnefatafl.

Hnefatafl is a strategy game similar to chess. Player 1 sets their pieces in a diamond shape in the middle of the board, surrounding the King. Player 2 sets their pieces along the edge of the board in two tiers. The game is won when the first player maneuvers the King into the corner of the board, or the second player takes the King captive.

You don’t need to go treasure hunting to score your own Viking strategy game. Sets can be found online or at spe-cialty gaming stores. You can even play Hnefatafl virtually by downloading an app to your phone.

For the Good of the Order

Ragnarok, The Norse Gods in Riverdale A Review by Michael Amundsen (Peer Gynt Lodge President)

Netflix spreads some Norwegian joy with the series “Ragnorok “, now up to season two. Filmed in the stunning inland fjords of Hordaland just east of Bergen, “Raganorok” is an addictive tale suggesting what could happen if Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica discovered they were Norse Gods.

Ragnorok, for those thin on their mythology, was the twilight of the Gods, the great end battle when the children of Loki and their allies, the Frost Giants, battle Odin, Thor and all the Aesir and Vanir to the death of pretty much everyone. The old world dies to be replaced with the new.

When this new story begins , the actual Ragnarok has already taken place, or so we think. The ancient Gods are dead. The only survivors are the Jutal family, giants who run the fifth most powerful corporation in Norway while spreading deadly pollution throughout rivers and mountains. They love power and wealth. And they do what they have to do to increase what they love. Are they the bad guys? Of course. They are giants.

Into this small town, appropriately named Edda after the Icelandic saga of the Norse Gods, settle a single mother and her two sons, Magne and Laurits. Magne is a nerd albeit a big husky one. Laurits is a troubled youth who likes to plays tricks. Attending a new school has its challenges, especially when the most popular kids in school are giants, the two attractive Jutal children, Saxa and Fjor. High School drama ensues.

The challenges of being a new kid in a new town turn tragic when Magne’s only friend, the teenage radical environmen-talist Isolde, is murdered in a freak hang-gliding accident by the Jutal father Vidar. Her death, which the local police re-fuse to investigate, sends Magne into a tizzy. He begins to ask all the wrong questions of all the wrong people. But it reaches a tipping point when in a rage he throws a sledge hammer over a dozen city blocks until it crashes into the front window of Vidar’s luxury sports car.

It doesn’t take much imagination to see that Magne and the Jutals are headed for a violent confrontation. And Laurits will take his time figuring out what side he is on. And is doesn’t take much time to discover that the old Gods may not be as dead as we assumed.

“Ragorok” is a fun and suspenseful exploration into the resurrection of the Norse Gods starring actual Norwegians. It is dubbed in English but if you want a sense of the motherland, you can watch it in the original language with subtitles. Ei-ther way It’s an addictive look at high school and Norse gods.
