Wolfgang Aulitzky, MD is the Medical Director of the American Austrian Foundation. He is Associate Dean for International Medicine and Distance Learning, Adjunct Prof. of Clinical Urology and Adjunct Prof. of Clinical Reproductive Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is also Associate Prof. of Urology at the University of Innsbruck and was Visiting Scientist at the Population Council at Rockefeller University, New York. He is a member of the American, German and Austrian Societies of Urology and was awarded the Zuckerkandelpreis of the Austrian Society of Urology in 1989. In 1995 he received the Silver Medal and 2007 the Golden Medal for Merits to the Republic of Austria. As Director of the Medical Program of the American Austrian Foundation he has initiated the Salzburg Cornell-, Philadelphia-, Columbia- and Cleveland Duke Seminars. Dr. Aulitzky earned his medical degree at the University of Innsbruck in 1977, was a research fellow at the University of Uppsala, Sweden in 1978-79 and at the New York Hospital - Cornell University Medical College in 1988-1989. He received his training as an urologist at the University of Innsbruck and the General Hospital of Salzburg. As a clinician he works as Medical Director and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Confraternitaet-Privatklinik Josefstadt in Vienna. He is the author of more than 140 publications on Urology, Andrology and Health Care issues and is co-author of books on basic and clinical urology/andrology. Susan Schachtner, MD (Course Director) obtained her undergraduate and medical school degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Her Pediatric Residency training and Pediatric Cardiology fellowship were performed at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington DC. During her fellowship, a year at the National Institute of Health stimulated her interest in research, and following this fellowship, several years were spent investigating pulmonary vascular development and enodothelial cell differentiation at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). During that time Dr. Schachtner developed a technique for in utero gene transfer into mouse embryos. Currently, Dr. Schachtner’s time is spent in clinical endeavors at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia focusing on outpatient cardiology, inpatient service on the cardiac ward and echocardiography. Dr. Schachtner serves as a mentor to several trainees in Pediatric Cardiology, teaches residents and fellows on the inpatient service, instructs fellows in the echo lab and serves as physician liaison to the advanced practice nurses in the Cardiac center at CHOP. Jörg I. Stein, MD (Co-Course Director) is Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria and Director of the Division of Pediatrics III – Pediatric Cardiology at the University Children’s Hospital Innsbruck. Dr. Stein trained in Pediatrics at the University Children’s Hospital, Medical University of Graz, Austria, in Pediatric Cardiology at the same institution, and from 1986-1987 at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He returned to Graz, Austria served there as staff member and pediatric cardiologist in a consultant position, became Vice Head of the Division and then Associate Professor, and then returned to Innsbruck, Austria in 2004 becoming full Professor and Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Stein’s major clinical and research interests are interventions, fetal cardiology, GUCH- Grown Ups with Congenital Heart Disease and Quality of Life aspects. A non-medical topic of special interest is medical education where he was in charge for the new curriculum of the Medical University of Graz. He is active in all relevant national and international scientific societies and will be chairperson of the 44th Annual Meeting of the Association of European Paediatric Cardiology/ AEPC to be held 2010 in Innsbruck. Marie Murphy Gleason, MD grew up in Brooklyn, New York and attended college at St. John’s University in Queens, NY (Bachelor of Science - Biology, 1977). She attended New York University School of Medicine, and graduated with an MD in 1981 and was honored to be elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the Medical Honor Society. Subsequently, she completed a residency in Pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), from 1981 to 1984. She had many great teachers like Dr. William Rashkind, who inspired her to become a cardiologist for children. She completed a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (1984-1987), and had the opportunity to work with Dr. William Norwood while he was chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at that time. After completing her fellowship, Dr. Gleason worked as a pediatric cardiologist at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA (1987-1994), where she directed the Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory and was promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine. In 1994, she returned to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to direct the Section of Outpatient and Community Cardiology. Dr. Gleason’s administrative responsibilities include overseeing the outpatient cardiology activity at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and its satellite centers in Pennsylvania, and organizing pediatric cardiology consultant services at several community hospitals in the region. Clinically, she sees outpatients 2 days per week, mentors a cardiology fellows continuity clinic, works in the Echocardiography Laboratory at CHOP 2 days per week and participates in fetal echocardiography sessions at several community hospitals. In 2004, she was promoted to Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In addition to these responsibilities, she is also a member of several hospital committees. Dr. Gleason has been married to Edward since 1984, and they have two sons. She enjoys reading, traveling, collecting porcelain and cooking. Jonathan Rome, MD received his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College in Ohio and an MD degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. His subsequent training was all at the Children’s Hospital, Boston including three years of residency as well as one year as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. His pediatric training was followed by a three-year fellowship in pediatric cardiology with a concentration in interventional cardiology. During these years Dr. Rome participated in animal studies and the initial clinical trials for the Clamshell and Cardioseal devices which became the first devices approved for transcatheter ASD closure. Following his training, Dr. Rome joined the Cardiology staff at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC in 1989 as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington School of Medicine. He became the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory there and developed the interventional cardiology program at that institution. He also worked in the Laboratories of the Molecular Hematology Division of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH on vascular gene transfer. In the spring of 1994, Dr. Rome joined the staff at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. His interests include transcatheter treatment of congenital cardiac defects with a particular focus on abnormalities of pulmonary arteries and their therapy as well as catheter therapy for complex heart defects. Robert Shaddy, MD is the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He trained in pediatric cardiology at the University of California San Francisco Cardiovascular Research Institute from 1983-1986. He then spent the next 21 years at Primary Children’s Medical Center and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, until 2007, when he moved to Philadelphia. Dr. Shaddy’s current clinical and research interests are in the area of heart failure and heart transplantation in children, in addition to the immunology of valved and non-valved allograft material used in pediatric heart surgery. Heiko Stern, MD began his medical education at the University of Mainz, Germany where he earned his medical degree. For the next two years he was educated in adult cardiology at Mainz and Munich University Clinics. Having had contact to the interesting field of congenital heart disease, he began his education in pediatric cardiology and later general pediatrics at the Deutsches Herzzentrum München and pediatric clinic at the Technical University in Munich graduating as pediatrician and pediatric cardiologist. Dr. Stern’s research has focused on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) since 1989. As one of the first centers in Germany and also Europe, his working group at the Deutsches Herzzentrum München started clinical research in application of CMR in congenital heart disease. Having intensified this work with a personal grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, he earned his PhD in 1994 on the use of CMR on congenital heart disease. Dr. Stern’s clinical career continued in 1994 as a resident at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK. From 1994-1998 he was associate director of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Hamburg University. Since 1998, he runs a private practice in pediatric cardiology in Munich and is also senior consultant in cardiac magnetic resonance at the Deutsches Herzzentrum München.
