We are so thrilled with the exciting opportunities that await you within our region, some professional and others inspiring or just plain fun. Your leadership team has been hard at work planning some incredible events for the few short months left in this current school year: exhibitions, workshops, an awards reception, involvement with the Columbus Arts Festival and so much more! Our goal is to offer at least one engaging experience each and every month… well that is unless the weather decides otherwise (sorry Nuts and Bolts workshop).

Get plugged in! Each and every COAEA opportunity is a chance to meet, talk, and collaborate with other like-minded arts educators; or be informed about current best practices in art education. Don’t feel like an island- our region is fi lled with incredible arts educators and resources that you would never have the chance to meet otherwise.

Keep being a creative force for good in all that you do.

Hello everyone! I am ex-cited to be the new technol-ogy chair for COAEA. As the education coordinator at the Ohio Craft Museum, I spend a lot of my time do-ing online mass communi-cation and marketing. I’m pleased to be able to help COAEA use social media to

It doesn’t take expensive materials and fancy techniques to make a great piece of art.

Lately, my favorite project has been “Nameville.” My 7th and 8th grade students used their name as basis for creating a city. We saw urban, rural, and even underwater worlds developed from their vast imaginations.

I didn’t want to limit the possibilities, so we opened the project up to mixed media, with tremendous results.

On your next vacation, be sure to stop by “Nameville.” ;)

reach art educators in Central Ohio, and hopefully increase our reach and membership.

So far, I’ve set up a few accounts in social media to help us reach current and potential members. Please “like” us on Facebook: do a search for “Central Ohio Art Educa-tion Association” in the Facebook search bar and you’ll fi nd us right away. We are on Twitter: send us a tweet at CentralOAEA and say hel-lo! Finally, you’ll be getting emails via Mail Chimp, so make sure these blasts aren’t going into your spam box (the last one was sent Feb. 4).

In the future, I’ll be setting up more ways for us to share event informa-tion, lesson plans and other digital resources. I hope for us to share ideas on Pinterest (we’re COAEA) and other digital information on Google Drive.

Are you on any of these social me-dia? Find us and say hello! Or shoot me an email and give me sugges-tions for connecting in the future.

Rob Griffi th teaches visual art in Logan Elm. His fi rst semester this year was at Salt Creek Intermedi-ate (5th and 6th grades), with his second semester at Pickaway El-ementary (K-4th grade). Rob says that his passion in the classroom is ignited by the love for learning that his students show.

When asked about the strength of his art classroom, Rob said, “Strangely, I believe the biggest strength in my studio environment is that I am not gifted in visual arts. I had to learn how to draw. This has made me more of an advocate to people who feel like they “can’t” do something.”

Featured Teacher: March

When he is not teaching visual art, Rob enjoys playing and coaching golf and spending time “driving my family all over the place.”

Featured Teacher: February

Emily Reiser is the Art Specialist at Montrose Elementary in Bexley City Schools, where she teaches students in grades k-6. Reiser says that her students inspire her every single day, “I consider myself a co-learner with my students and we

I have found this group in my classroom and feel very grateful for the young artists who bring their curiosity, fearless-ness, and creativity.”

Reiser says that the strength of her school studio environment is that it is a safe failing ground, “I try to deemphasize the product and en-courage risk-taking, experimenta-tion and play. Although this creates a sometimes messy environment, I can see the benefi ts for my students. They feel ownership of their own work and they can articulate their artistic process.

She has two little girls who keep her laughing and remind her to play every day.

Greetings fellow art lovers and edu-cators, as your Columbus Advocacy chair my goal will be to share posi-tive tidbits of hopeful happenings in the fi eld of art education. One item that was brought to my atten-tion recently was Governor John Kasich’s plan to propose increased arts funding. The budget is part of what is being called a “Blueprint for a New Ohio”. The Ohio Citizen’s for the Arts state that Kasich plans to increase the Ohio Arts Council’s total appropriations by 5.5% in FY 2016 to 12 million and by an ad-

ditional 4.2%, to 12.5 million in FY 2017. State program subsidies (grant awards) would be increased by 5.2% to $10.2 million in FY16 and by 4.9% to $10.7 million in FY17. The Ohio Arts Council sec-tion of the budget is attached here.

I would like to end my short but sweet writing submission with a small testimonial. As a new teach-er, new member to OAEA , and as the new PR/Arts Advocacy board member of the Central Ohio region I encourage you to get to know the OAEA website. It offers art educa-tors and enthusiasts’ opportunities

to get in the know with art educa-tion happenings all throughout Ohio. Look for the regions tab on the OAEA site, and then select the region you are interested in. I am a big fan of the upcoming events sec-tion listed under the Central regions page. William Plomer said, “Cre-ativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected.” So let’s get connected, who knows what we can do when we put our heads together. With that being said, I hope to see you all at many of the thoughtfully crafted workshops or gatherings in the near future.

This is a great opportunity to build your resume and network with some amaz-ing art teachers. Anyone interested should consider getting involved with this year’s reception to learn the pro-cess and learn fi rst hand what it takes to put on a great K-8 Art Exhibition. If you are like me, seeing or hear-ing the word “free” is especially enticing when trying to be cultur-ally engaged or explore new artistic skills. That being said, I would like to share two opportunities for edu-cators in central Ohio that are both FREE!
