Poultry Science Undergraduate Internship Award
The Andrew F. Giesen III Poultry Science Undergraduate Internship Award
1. Objective: Dr. Giesen’s career included broad and varied contributions to Poultry Science
through research, teaching, support of the poultry and allied industries and support of the Poultry
Science Association. It is the objective of this internship award and the desire of the Giesen
Family, to help promote the education and development of undergraduate students interested in
considering a career in Poultry Science. To achieve this objective, the funds provided by this
Internship Award will be used to support summer internships to as many deserving applicants as
there are available funds to achieve. These funded internships are intended for undergraduate
students with a demonstrated interest in any field involving Poultry Science and can be in any
area of an enterprise engaged in or supporting the Poultry Industry.
2. Target Population: The ideal candidate will be entering their junior or senior year of a Bachelor
of Science degree with a declared major in any area of life-sciences and an interest in exploring a
poultry science related field. No prior poultry related work experience is required to apply for this
award.
3. Funding : Funding for these internships may vary over time, however, at the outset will include
the following:
a. Hourly compensation of $10/hr. or greater (not to exceed 40 hr./wk.) for a period of
approximately 8-12 weeks. The exact timing and duration of the internship will be
determined by the sponsoring company/organization in discussion with the Awardee(s).
b. It is expected that company/organizations that choose to partner with the PSF regarding
the AFG III internship award will support at least 50% of the cost of sponsoring the
internship with direct or in-kind contributions.
c. Housing and cost of living arrangements: In some limited cases the
Company/Organization may be able to assist with these arrangements but unless
otherwise stated, the student will be expected to pay for their own transportation and
living expenses.
d. Disbursement of funds from the AFG III capital fund will be arranged by a representative
of the PSF Board of Trustees and be made payable to the sponsoring
company/organization.
4. Applications: A letter of application along with supporting materials should be submitted
electronically via the PSA awards website no later than March 1 prior to the Annual Meeting at
which the award is to be announced. Decisions will be made and communicated by April 1 to
facilitate Awardee and Company/Organization planning for an early June startup of the
internship. Supporting materials for the application should include:
a. Applicants should indicate the type of internship they are seeking and the name of the
company/organization they would like to work with. A list of companies that have
indicated willingness to provide potential internship opportunities will be provided in
advance of the application period such that students may apply for an internship with a
particular company/organization in this list. It is anticipated that Applicants and Mentors
will provide additional recommendations of company/organizations that they hope to
intern with. In these cases the Applicant must provide the name of the
company/organization and the contact information of the individual that will coordinate
with the Selection Committee with their application.
b. The applicant is required to write a 1-3 page letter of introduction to the selection
committee to describe their background, education and career goals. Any relevant
experience can also be included but is not required for consideration. Furthermore, the
applicant must elaborate their particular interests with respect to the internship work
experience they desire in order to facilitate matching the eventual awardees with
appropriate Company/Organization sponsors.
c. Letters in support of the applicant, not to exceed three in number, judiciously solicited
from colleagues, students or administrators (department head/chair or
dean/employer/industry representative, as appropriate) with unique perspectives of the
applicant’s qualifications.
5. Timing and Implementation of Internships:
a. The expected duration of the internship is 8-12 weeks and is anticipated to be scheduled
between June and August of the year it is awarded, although timing is ultimately up to the
Awardees and the sponsoring Company/Organization’s availability.
b. Disbursement of funds:
i. Following selection and notification of the Awardees and verification of the
Company/Organization’s willingness to sponsor the Awardee for an agreed upon
duration, the funds will be disbursed to the sponsoring Company/Organization in
a single payment by the PSF treasurer.
ii. The Company/Organization will be responsible for payment of appropriately
documented hourly wages worked by the Intern through the
company/organizations normal payroll system. The Intern will be paid a
minimum of $10/hr. for hours worked during the internship with the
Company/Organization subject to required IRS policies regarding reporting of
income and withholding taxes.
iii. The Intern is required to follow all policies and procedures of employees of the
Company/Organization including but not limited to confidentiality, safety and
integrity. Failure of the Intern to comply with any such policies and procedures
will result in termination of the internship at the discretion of the sponsoring
Company/Organization.
iv. The company will provide the Intern with all required safety and onboarding
training in order that they can safely and effectively perform the specified work
duties within the Company/Organization.
v. At the end of the internship, Awardees will provide the PSF Board of Trustees a
final report detailing the internship experience, highlighting key learnings that
have obtained and offering suggestions for improving the experience.
vi. Partnering company/organization will provide the PSF Board of Trustees a brief
assessment of the interns’ performance as well as any suggestions for improving
the internship experience.
