WINNING SPINSBASSISTS JUST MIGHT BE THE MOSTcommonly overlooked musicians on the band-stand, mostly because of the misperceptionthat their instrument is easier to play thanothers. Listeners also tend to ignore the factthat bassists and drummers can rarely lay outto create space, unlike guitarists, keyboardistsand horn players. But South Florida bassistJamie Ousley splits the difference betweensupport and spotlight on his sophomore CD,Back Home (Tie Records), with very impres-sive results.

As he did on his last disc, 2008’s O SorrisoDela, Ousley returned to Osaka, Japan, torecord with longtime trio mates PhillipStrange and Larry Marshall, on piano anddrums, respectively. Both musicians werestaples of the South Florida jazz scene beforerelocating, and the threesome share anunmistakable synergy.

Rather than relying on familiar standards,Ousley includes just one and creativelyrearranges it. On Rodgers and Hammerstein’s“My Favorite Things,” multi-instrumentalistIra Sullivan plays the melody on alto flutewith all the sophistication expected of a 79-year-old jazz icon. Strange’s solo is brief butcompelling, as is Ousley’s, yet the bassistspends most of the seven-minute track doinghis job—locking in with Marshall.

Ousley also rearranges Chopin’s “Nocturnein E flat major, Op. 9, No. 2.” In the process,he turns the classical piece into a playfulromp with Strange and percussionistCarlomagno Araya.

But Ousley creates the most interest with hisoriginal compositions. On the bassist’s openingcomposition, “A Tune, Sir?” Sullivan’s fluidflugelhorn perfectly complements the bounceprovided by Strange and the rhythm section.A New Orleans-flavored stroll, “This Is It!”employs the same personnel, only this timeSullivan adds spice on soprano saxophone—an instrument he uses to completely differenteffect on the ballad, “Clearing.”

Sullivan hired Ousley for his own band, and the unselfish bassist seems like he’sreturning the favor throughout Back Home byplacing the spotlight directly on his esteemedelder. (Of course, prominently featuringsomeone of Sullivan’s stature won’t do

Ousley any harm, either.) The venerableSouth Florida musician also lends instru-mental warmth to a couple of vocal ballads. On “So Long,” Ousley’s ode to his uncle LeaOusley, who died of cancer last year, LeNardRutledge’s soulful voice is augmented by thebassist’s cadence, Marshall’s brushwork,Strange’s chording and Sullivan’s poignantsoprano sax solo. Perhaps an indication thatOusley is a minister’s son, “Prayer” againfeatures Sullivan on alto flute during anextended intro, before vocalist NanamiMorikawa sings the familiar recitation of“Now I lay me down to sleep.”

A Tennessee native who relocated in 1998to study at the University of Miami, Ousleycombines his Southern origins with SouthFlorida’s Latino culture on a pair of composi-tions. “Nashvillatino” features Araya’s arrayof propulsive percussion instruments, plusstatement-making solos by Ousley andStrange amid the salsa-flavored rhythms.“Pasaje Tennessee” lures the listener in witha traditional jazz intro before JhonnyMendoza introduces South American flavorsvia mandolin, violin, maracas and cuatro(four-stringed guitar).

Of all Ousley’s gifts as a musician, his keen earsmay be the most impressive. Few bassists can playcomfortably in a duo with a vocalist, since being thelone rhythmic, harmonic and melodic instrumental-ist is often about as comfortable as public nudity. But Ousley and West Palm Beach-based singer SAMMhave dueted at various South Florida venues formore than five years. SAMM’s smoky deliveryproves the perfect vehicle for the wistful title ballad, this time in a quartet with Ousley, Strangeand Marshall. An instrumental bonus-track version, with ace Miami saxophonist Ed Calleplaying the vocal melody on soprano, providesthe CD’s coda.

On paper, the serpentining themes and moods of Back Homemight appear to lack continuity. But thankfully they appear on disc, where theyadd up to one of the more impressive recordings by a South Florida-based jazz artist.

Jamie Ousley and SAMM perform Mondays at the Palm Beach Steakhouse, startingat 6:30PM. Call (561) 671-4333. For more on Ousley, visit Jamieousley.com.

JOE “SURVIVAL” CARUSO AND THE BOOGIE-WOOGIE BOO-FAYEARL’S HIDEAWAY, SEBASTIAN/AUG. 6Growing up in New Orleans, Joe “Survival” Carusolived right across the street from a happening blues club, where stars such as Ray Charles, Dinah Washington,Fats Domino and Guitar Slim would work their magic.Understandably inspired, and from a musical familyhimself, the teenaged guitarist and vocalist started hisown band and was soon opening for Etta James, HankBallard and Ernie K-Doe. After serving in Vietnam,Caruso helmed his own bands and worked as a side-man, in Oakland, Calif., as well as in New Orleans. The guitarist lived in the Crescent City until Katrinachased him out in 2005, and he’s since relocated to the

Volusia County townof DeBary. His 1990srecording, I’ll NeverGet Out of These BluesAlive, showcases hispowerful vocals and aguitar style very muchrooted in the Texas-Louisiana style ofLong John Hunterand Phillip Walker. His Boogie-WoogieBoo-Fay Band hasbeen lighting up theblues clubs of Daytona,St. Augustine, Sanfordand Sebastian. On the title track, as well ason tunes such as “Farmer” and “This Ol’ Tractor,” herevels in the dirt-under-the-fingernails values helearned while growing up in rural South Carolina. Ofcourse, once Arnold had learned to play his brother’shomemade gas-can guitar, he embarked on a decades-long adventure that included stints in bands witheveryone from James Brown to Muddy Waters, andrecordings with the likes of John Lee Hooker and OtisSpann. (That’s also Mac’s bassline on the Sanford

and Son theme song.)Residing once again inhis hometown ofPelzer, S.C., the rich-voiced blues singercontinues to draw onthe substance of thesoil for his music. Histunes run the gamutfrom country balladsto hard-charging,twin-barrel blasts fea-turing the stingingleads of guitaristAustin Brashier andthe gritty harmonicaof Max Hightower. BW

BOOGIE-WOOGIE FESTFRITZ & FRANZ BIERHAUS, CORAL GABLES/AUG. 20-22Barrelhouse-blues expert Piano Bob Wilder has puttogether a sterling lineup for his inaugural Boogie-Woogie Fest. The South Florida blues fave has invitedAnn Rabson, Joe Krown, John “Papa” Gros and EdenBrent to join him and local blues stalwart Motel Mel forthe event. Blues fans might recognize Rabson fromher days with Saffire–The Uppity Blues Women; thepianist often stole the show with her sly and dexterousboogie and blues playing. New Orleans keyboardistKrown established himself with Gatemouth Brown’sband, and was a staple of the Maple Leaf bar’sTraditional Piano Night. Known primarily as theHammond-organ-ripping vocalist of New Orleans’

Papa Grows Funk,Gros will trade in hisB3 for the grand pianoWilder will have onhand. Last year, theM i s s i s s i p p i - b a s e dBrent won BluesMusic Awards forAcoustic Album andAcoustic Artist of theYear, and this year theBMAs honored herwith a trophy forPinetop Perkins PianoPlayer of the Year. Adon’t-miss for piano-blues fans. BW

Evenprior to Hurricane Katrina, the guitarist and vocalisthas been a passionate advocate for the Voice of theWetlands organization, honoring his home with albumtitles such as Wetlands and Power of the Ponchartrain. In 2008, he even traveled to Washington, D.C., tomake sure that Congress doesn’t forget about thisprecious ecological resource. Now, with the BP oil spillthreatening the already-endangered coastal territory,Benoit’s voice is needed more than ever. Of course, the

bluesman does most ofhis lobbying with hisbiting ax and brawnyvocals as he calls on hisCajun background, aswell as Crescent Cityboogie and R&B influ-ences. MARIA RIVASHEIDI’S JAZZ CLUB, COCOA BEACH/AUG. 7Being able to sing in English, Spanish, French, Italianand Portuguese has certainly helped Venezuelan vocalistMaria Rivas’ stature as a world-music star. A recentrelocation to South Florida, and appearances withMiami-based trumpet star Arturo Sandoval, have alsoheightened the singer’s Sunshine State profile. On anApril broadcast on WLRN-FM (91.3), South Florida’spublic radio affiliate, Rivas dazzled during a perform-ance with a collective of regional and Venezuelan jazzall-stars, which included a multilingual version of“My Funny Valentine.” Her eighth and latest CD,Pepida Queen, offers similar thrills through voice, piano, bass and traditional Japanese drums. Rivas

started her singingcareer in the nightclubsof her native Caracas inthe mid-’80s, and espe-cially developed hertechnique after movingto Aruba and present-ing her “SentimentalJourney Through Jazz”concerts for almostthree years. And as ifsinging in five lan-guages weren’t enough,Rivas also possessesan Ella Fitzgerald-inspired scat-singingability. BM

NICOLE HENRYVAN DYKE CAFE, MIAMI BEACH/AUG. 25American jazz stars have been finding more receptiveaudiences overseas for more than 50 years, which putsMiami vocalist Nicole Henry in good company. ThePhiladelphia-born, University of Miami-trained singerdisplayed a soaring delivery on her debut CD TheNearness of You. The album climbed to No. 2 on theHMV Japan Jazz Chart, earning her the “Best NewJazz Artist of 2004” distinction from the Japanesemusic retailer. Her sophomore effort, Teach Me Tonight(with the Eddie Higgins Trio), reached No. 1 and earnedHenry the HMV award for “Best Vocal Jazz Album of2005.” But her latest release, a collection of standardstitled The Very Thought of You, helped Henry reach

more ears here in theU.S. Henry investsplenty of emotion intofamiliar jazz tunes suchas “All the Way,” “AtLast” and the lovelytitle track, the latter ofwhich features pianistMike Orta. The albumpeaked at No. 7 on theBillboard Jazz Chart inSeptember of 2008—putting her betweentwo American stars ofinternational renown,Diana Krall and TonyBennett. BM
