A spinal cord injury (SCI) is typically defined as damage or trauma to the spinal cord that in turn results in a loss or impaired function resulting in reduced mobility or feeling. Quadriplegia or Tetraplegia is when a person has a spinal cord injury above the first thoracic vertebra (T1), C1 to C8 resulting in paralysis of all four limbs. This may result in partial or complete paralysis of the arms as well as complete paralysis of the legs. A spinal cord injury (SCI) is typically defined as damage or trauma to the spinal cord that in turn results in a loss or impaired function resulting in reduced mobility or feeling.

Hi, my name is Irma Patricia González Salinas -

Paty- from Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz (Mexico) I

have a spinal cord injury due to a car accident

nine years ago.

Actually I’m 23 years and I’m doing a degree in

accountancy online. Basically I spend my time

studying and making physical therapy to maintain

the body in a good condition.

Unfortunately, there is still no cure, it is no

possible to regenerate the nervous tissue that is

in the spinal cord. Meanwhile, we maintain faith

without worrying but keeping us busy.

Eventually, there are news about researches or

treatments for spinal cord injuries, but even the

countries with most advance science and

technology seem to be limited because they do

not obtain the expected results.

Today I am very happy to have good news

because there is an investigation that is worthy to

follow.

The technique involves the autologous

transplantation of olfactory glial cells to the

damaged site in the spinal cord. This investigation

is headed by Dr. Almudena Ramon Cueto in Spain.

The investigation catches my attention due to the

successful results in treated animals, but even

more I am impressed with the features of these

olfactory bulb cells:

•The cells are not rejected by the body because

they are not modified.

•The cells do not generate tumors.

•Autologous therapy, the patient is the donor.

•The therapy is not patentable, there are no

economic benefits.

Because of the last characteristic maybe this therapy

has not been taken seriously by governments and

pharmaceutics, to the contrary, it has encountered

too many obstacles for proliferation.

“Why so much interest that the project do not progress? Why the project is not supported by political and health institutions? Why other Spanish investigators oppose so starkly? Sincerely I do not know and do not understand. I do not want to imagine that is by an unethical interest. There are many people that suffer an spinal cord injury and I think everybody should cooperate in the effort to help them from their own investigation projects without blocking their colleagues projects.” Dr. Maria Delgado.
