FAMILY FAITH MOMENTS
This Sunday, the Catholic Church celebrates
Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. Jesus had
promised His Apostles that He would send His Holy
Spirit, and on Pentecost they were granted the gifts of
the Spirit. The Apostles were no longer afraid and
began preaching the Gospel in all the languages
that the Jews gathered there spoke. We too receive
the gifts of the Holy Spirit to guide us and help us live
a life pleasing to God.
Bringing the liturgical life of the Church home to your
family. Make this Sunday a day of celebration – wear
red clothing and have a birthday cake for dessert.
The Holy Spirit is portrayed as wind, fire, or a dove.
Make a windsock to fly outside. Draw a dove or
tongue of fire, then attach seven long pieces of red
streamers and on each write one of the gifts of the
Spirit: Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Piety
(Love), Counsel, Fortitude (Courage), and Fear of the
Lord. And then hang your windsock.

ACT of SPIRITUAL
COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the
Most Holy Sacrament I love you above all
things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you
sacramentally, come at least spiritually
into my heart. I embrace you
as if you were already there and unite myself
wholly to you. Never permit me to be
separated from you.
THE ANGELUS
V/. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R/. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary…
V/. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R/. Be it done unto me according to Your Word.
Hail Mary…
V/. The word became flesh R/. And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary…
V/. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God R/. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, Your grace into our hearts: that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Your Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may, by His passion and cross be brought to the joy of His Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Do not be afraid of holiness, do not be afraid to aim high, to be loved and purified by God, do not be afraid to let yourself be guided by the Holy Spirit.” POPE FRANCIS
THE STORY of the VISITATION
of the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
This is a fairly late feast, going back only to the
13th or 14th century. It was established widely
throughout the Church to pray for unity.
The present date of celebration was set in 1969,
in order to follow the Annunciation of the Lord
and precede the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist.
Like most feasts of Mary, it is closely connected
with Jesus and his saving work. The more visible
actors in the visitation drama (see Luke 1:39-45)
are Mary and Elizabeth. However, Jesus and John
the Baptist steal the scene in a hidden way. Jesus
makes John leap with joy—the joy of messianic
salvation. Elizabeth, in turn, is filled with the Holy
Spirit and addresses words of praise to Mary—
words that echo down through the ages.
It is helpful to recall that we do not have a
journalist’s account of this meeting. Rather Luke,
speaking for the Church, gives a prayerful poet’s
rendition of the scene. Elizabeth’s praise of Mary
as “the mother of my Lord” can be viewed as the
earliest Church’s devotion to Mary. As with all
authentic devotion to Mary, Elizabeth’s
(the Church’s) words first praise God for what God
has done to Mary. Only secondly does she praise
Mary for trusting God’s words. Then comes the
Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Here, Mary herself—like
the Church—traces all her greatness to God.
One of the invocations in Mary’s litany is
“Ark of the Covenant.” Like the Ark of the
Covenant of old, Mary brings God’s presence into
the lives of other people. As David danced before
the Ark, John the Baptist leaps for joy. As the Ark
helped to unite the 12 tribes of Israel by being
placed in David’s capital, so Mary has the power
to unite all Christians in her son. At times, devotion
to Mary may have occasioned some divisiveness,
but we can hope that authentic devotion will lead
all to Christ and therefore, to one another.
