GIRLS TENNIS THE MOLLIE BIGGANE AWARD
Sportsmanship-Achievement-Inspiration Mollie Biggane played on the varsity tennis team for four years, from 1994-1997. By
the time she graduated, she had become the team’s most accomplished doubles player, its captain, and Most Valuable Player. Far more important than her success on the court, which was significant, was what she brought to the team as a student athlete representing Garden City High School. Mollie loved competing on the tennis team,
enjoyed the camaraderie with her teammates and coaches, and displayed the best of sportsmanship – a special graciousness – win or lose, to her opponents. Her
enthusiasm, motivation, and love for the game of tennis made her a natural leader who inspired her peers, and captured their total respect and admiration. Mollie died of cancer at the age of twenty in the fall of what would have been her junior year of college. Everyone whose lives she touched – so many and in so many ways – will
remember her as a girl whose heart was as big and as warm as her smile. The Mollie Biggane Award is presented to the varsity tennis player who best reflects the spirit of
sportsmanship, achievement, and inspiration.

John “Jake” White Scholarship Award Established May 2015
The John “Jake” White Scholarship Award will be presented to a student-athlete that
has exemplified the defining characteristics that were innate in the selfless commitment
demonstrated by Jake to the entire school, community and athletic program here at
Garden City for nearly a century. Jake had an unconditional passion for our athletic
program, possessed a tremendous gift for statistics, a thirst for historical perspectives
and the most sincere and genuine man; a true gentleman. In short, Jake White loved
everything about Garden City High School especially the coaches and student-athletes
that he worked with through the years. Jake made everyone feel like a rock star.
Jake is described best by one of our current students “Jake White: The true spirit of Garden City High School.” It is in honor of Jake’s memory that this award has been created.

WRESTLING KEVIN JARVIS AWARD
Determination and Resilience Award Longtime Garden City Grappler youth wrestling coach Rob Jarvis lost his son Kevin on March
28th, 2011, he was 13 years old. He was a boy filled with life and laughter. Even though he
was disabled and wheel-chair bound, he was gifted with a smile and personality that engaged
all who met him. He found joy at life’s true blessings: his parents, his brothers, Matt and
Gregory, and the many, many family members and friends who loved him. Kevin appreciated,
with all the might anyone could muster, the dawning of each new day, and he filled each day
with love and laughter. He took nothing for granted. Kevin celebrated every day of his short
life with joy and love; he was an inspiration and example to all who knew him. The Kevin Jarvis
Award is given to a Garden City High School wrestler who came through the Garden City
Grappler Youth Program and has displayed to his teammates and coaches the same qualities of
determination and resilience that Kevin Jarvis did in his short life.

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK THE HARDY PRIZE
Outstanding Hurdler
This award is in honor of Michael Hardy Edwards (’86 Garden City High School), who gave his young life on 9/11 in the south tower of the World Trade Center. Known by his middle name to his close friends, Michael grew up in Garden City. He was a crack 400-
meter hurdler at Garden City High School. Michael set the Garden City High School record for the 400-meter hurdles in his junior year and he was a fine relay runner; but he had his promising career cut short by injury. Another of his claims to fame while at Garden City High School was his success against Malverne’s Derrick Adkins, who went on to become the 1992 Olympic Champion in the 400 meter hurdles. This award, as
the name implies, shall go to the outstanding hurdler, male or female, who demonstrates the athleticism and determination in the face of adversity, while
competing for Garden City High School.
