On Keeping St. Kilian’s Parishioners Safe ◊ July 18, 2020 Dear Parishioners, Over the summer, Msgr. Rowan had our air conditioning contractor, Quality Air Conditioning & Heating Inc. of Farmingdale (they do homes too!) put in the latest state of the art Air Filters into our Church’s Air Conditioning system as well as an Ultraviolet Germicidal Light Filtration system.
The sanitizing effects of UV lights have been seen on coronaviruses, including the one that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Studies have shown that it can be used against other coronaviruses. One study found that UVC exposure inactivated SARS, making it impossible for the virus to replicate. New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority announced the use of UV light on subway cars, buses, technology centers, and offices. The National Academy of Sciences says although there is no concrete evidence yet for UV’s effectiveness on the virus that causes COVID-19 (only because it is so new), it has worked on other similar coronaviruses viruses, and so it would most likely fight this one too. UV light has been tested to kill the Coronavirus up to 99% of the time. UV light also kills all bacteria and is used in hospitals.
St. Kilian’s Church is the ONLY church in the Diocese to have a UV Light Filtration System in the air conditioning system! Please note that our AC is used for the Sunday Masses and Funerals. (It is currently not used for weekday Masses because they are less than 30 minutes long with a low number of attendees and because of the high cost of electricity on Long Island.) Masks are still required in Church!

A MESSAGE FROM DEACON FRANK BARONE
Parish of St. Kilian, Bishop and Martyr - www.stkilian.com
In these uncertain times, it gives me great solace to know that there will always be one constant — Jesus has always and will always be there for me … for all of us … to listen and guide us through faith.
We have all faced trials and tribulations — both with the current state of the global pandemic, and even more so with personal challenges — but as it’s been said, God will never give you a cross too heavy to carry. And in those times when we don’t feel we can carry the weight of the challenges before us, He will give us a hand.
When I was ordained a deacon on May 18, 1991, I could never have predicted how enriching this ministry would be. I am currently Chaplin of the Farmingdale Fire Department, as well as the Sons and Daughters of Italy. Additionally, I am also the spiritual advisor for Handicap Encounter Christ.
Working side-by-side with my dear friend Deacon Rody, I had the privilege of working as a Youth Minister of SKY for 17 years watching and helping guide the spiritual paths of our parish youth.
And while I find such joy in welcoming our youngest parishioners through the sacrament of baptism and helping cerebrate the love of a man and a woman by joining their hearts through the sacrament of marriage, in recent years, most of my energy has been focused on our parish Bereavement Ministry - especially since experiencing such loss in my personal life.
I am blessed to had been married to my amazing wife Michele for 49 years prior to her untimely passing in September 2016. If it wasn’t for my faith and my relationship with Jesus, I do not know how I would be writing this now. That said, I struggle every single day knowing that Michele is no longer a physical presence, however, because of my faith I know we will be together again with our Savior, Jesus Christ.
I’m not sure who originally said this, but “When we mourn someone we love, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind.” If the passing of Michele taught me anything, it is just that - to carry on her legacy by showing the same kindness and compassion to others — just as she did throughout her life.
Personally, I have been rich with love through my marriage with Michele and as parents to two wonderful daughters — Kristin (husband, Vinny) and Leigh-Mary (husband, Ernie) and grandparents to Lindsey, Maggie, Joey, Ryan, Lily and Caroline. My life has been enriched with dear friendships, fellow veterans, support of clergy, and a brotherhood of deacons.
Professionally, I was successful in the printing business for 40+ years — both owning my own company, and working as a salesman. I am retired from that industry, but I choose to work every single day serving Christ.
While blessed both personally and professionally, nothing in my life would be possible without my spirituality. Because of my faith, I was a better husband, a more patient father, and a kinder friend. I have had the opportunity to serve as a deacon to our parish family and help people through Catholic milestones such as baptism and matrimony, as well as be a spiritual advisor to many through more difficult times.
Thank you for letting me serve Christ through you, my friends and I look forward to seeing you again very soon.
Stay well, and peace always. - Deacon Frank

Today is Catechetical Sunday!
On Catechetical Sunday, we honor and thank our parish and school catechists who teach and pass on the Catholic faith each year. Please pray for them as they begin their ministry this Fall.
A PRAYER FOR CATECHISTS
Loving Father, we pray today for our catechists. We thank you for their gift of ministry in your Church.
Grant them your wisdom that they may grow in the understanding and teaching of your Word. Grant them also your love that they may be fruitful heralds of your Word and lead
others to love you. Pour forth your Holy Spirit upon them to grant them wisdom about what is important; knowledge of the truths of faith; understanding of their meaning; right
judgement about how to apply them in life; courage to persevere even in the face of adversity; reverence before all that is sacred and holy; and that loving zeal which leads others to a
transforming encounter with your Son. We pray this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Our dates have been set for Confirmation this Fall. They will take place on these Saturdays in November:
November 14 - 12:30pm and 2:30pm, November 21 - 12:30pm & 2:30pm and November 28 - 2:30pm
Registering for Confirmation has begun with St. Kilian Faith For-mation. Let us keep all our Confirmation candidates and their families in our prayers as
they prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation in the coming months.

STEWARDSHIP
Gratitude, Generosity and God’s Grace...
A Stewardship Reflection
These are unknown and uncertain times that we face - as a world,
a nation, and a community. Yet in these times, if we can find that
in some small way we are able to give thanks for the blessings God
bestows on us, reflect on those blessings and share them with
others, then we are, indeed, continuing our stewardship journeys
– even in the absence of traditional ministerial service.
In the quiet moments of these unprecedented days when our lives and routines are constantly
shifting, adapting to new “normals”, how do we see that God is always working in our lives and in the
lives of those we love and who love us? How can we be thankful, showing and sharing our gratitude for
all that we have been blessed with? How may we recognize those fleeting and simple grace-filled
moments , regardless of the difficulties and frustrations that may arise in each day?
Many obstacles may lie in our path. And yet, if we find ourselves able to recognize those blessings and
show our gratitude by reaching out to our brothers and sisters in faith amidst the many challenges and
changes in this unique time, we will lift ourselves and each other up as faithful stewards in His name!
