Parish Newsletter 8th/9th July 2017 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "Come to me, all you who labour and are bur- dened, and I will give you rest." Is there anyone to whom this doesn't apply? Don't we all have to labour at something, whether it be work, school, relationships, household af- fairs, or personal, emotional, or mental battles? Aren't we all burdened in some way at some time? Jesus offers us powerful words of consolation in today's Gospel. He promises us rest. He calls all of us to him-self, along with the baggage and bur- dens that we carry, and assures us that we will find relief. Thank God! What a gift for our tired, weary souls. The strange part about the passage, however, is when Jesus suggests that in order to find this wonderful rest, we have to take a "yoke" upon our shoulders. This of course is a reference to the ani- mal harness of old that would join two oxen to- gether to share the weight of the load they car- ried. He tells us, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me... For my yoke is easy, and my bur- den light." Somehow, joining Jesus in his work is sup-posed to bring us rest! Contrary to the standard belief that not working is the source of relief, Jesus urges us to join him in his mission in order to find peace. But what is this mission? To be "meek and humble of heart." Je- sus' work is to do whatever God the Father wants him to do. As he says elsewhere, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work" (Jn 4:34). So, it seems that if we also humbly submit to do- ing God's work-with Jesus right alongside us as our partner in the task-we will "find rest" for our- selves. So as we labour through the trials of the day, may we bear this in mind, and pray that we may handle them according to the will of God. The Lord said to me, ‘Come to me.’ But I said, ‘I’m not worthy.’ ‘Come to me,’ he repeated. And I said, ‘I’m afraid.’ ‘Come to me.’ ‘I’m too proud.’ ‘Come to me.’ ‘But I’ve no appointment.’ ‘Come to me.’ ‘But I can’t afford the time right now.’ ‘Come to me.’ With that I fell silent. Then he said, ‘Come … sit down … take the load off your feet.’ ‘Sit here as in the shade of a tree.’ ‘Refresh yourself as at a running stream.’ ‘Here you will find rest. Here you will find peace.’ ‘And your yoke will become easy, and your burden light.’ P PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TAKE THIS NEWSLETTER HOME WITH YOU. .

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"Come to me, all you who labour and are bur-dened, and I will give you rest." Is there anyone to whom this doesn't apply?

Don't we all have to labour at something, whether it be work, school, relationships, household af-fairs, or personal, emotional, or mental battles? Aren't we all burdened in some way at some time?

Jesus offers us powerful words of consolation in today's Gospel. He promises us rest. He calls all of us to him-self, along with the baggage and bur-dens that we carry, and assures us that we will find relief. Thank God! What a gift for our tired, weary souls.

The strange part about the passage, however, is when Jesus suggests that in order to find this wonderful rest, we have to take a "yoke" upon our shoulders. This of course is a reference to the ani-mal harness of old that would join two oxen to-gether to share the weight of the load they car-ried. He tells us, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me... For my yoke is easy, and my bur-den light." Somehow, joining Jesus in his work is sup-posed to bring us rest!

Contrary to the standard belief that not working is the source of relief, Jesus urges us to join him in his mission in order to find peace. But what is this mission? To be "meek and humble of heart." Je-sus' work is to do whatever God the Father wants him to do. As he says elsewhere, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work" (Jn 4:34).

So, it seems that if we also humbly submit to do-ing God's work-with Jesus right alongside us as our partner in the task-we will "find rest" for our-selves. So as we labour through the trials of the day, may we bear this in mind, and pray that we may handle them according to the will of God.

The Lord said to me, ‘Come to me.’ But I said, ‘I’m not worthy.’ ‘Come to me,’ he repeated.

And I said, ‘I’m afraid.’ ‘Come to me.’ ‘I’m too proud.’

‘Come to me.’ ‘But I’ve no appointment.’ ‘Come to me.’ ‘But I can’t afford

the time right now.’ ‘Come to me.’ With that I fell silent.

Then he said, ‘Come … sit down … take the load off your feet.’

‘Sit here as in the shade of a tree.’ ‘Refresh yourself as at a running stream.’

‘Here you will find rest. Here you will find peace.’ ‘And your yoke will become easy,

and your burden light.’

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE PRO-LIFE? every life has equal value, that Organisers of last Saturday’s Rally for Life in Dublin reckon that more than 50,000 people took part in the event in support of

Ireland’s constitutional protection of the life of the child in the womb, as provid-ed by the eighth amendment to Bunreacht na hÉireann (the Irish Constitution). Earlier in the afternoon, at a Mass for the Protection of Life held in St Saviour’s Church, Dominick Street, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin said that the pro-life message was a message of love. “Being pro-life means that we have an uncompromised passion for life, for what life is and never categorise any life to be of lesser values than others. Being pro-life is not an ideology of slogans. It involves the way we live. Being pro-life means that we are always on the side of life and life in its fullness. It means that we fight to avoid the emptiness of so many visions of our society and that we continually remember that we ourselves need con-version to Christ who is light and life. Being pro-life means especially that we are called to accompany and be alongside those who are suffering and facing challenges in their life. We think of those challenged by crisis pregnancy; we think of young people who have grown up adrift in a society where the dignity of life can be so undermined; we think of those whose lives end up oppressed or repressed. Being pro-life means dealing with everyone with respect, just as being pro-life in today’s society deserves being treated with respect for the right of any citizen to make their views and convictions known. Being pro-life is a way to live as active citizens in defending that fundamental principle of democracy that we are all equal before the law. A society that begins to establish its own categories of lives that are considered of lesser value than others, begins a process that undermines democracy.” (Excerpt from Archbishop Martin’s Homily)
