I am struck by the sensitivity of the outreach I have encountered at many hospitals entitled “No One Dies Alone”. Men and women are trained to be present to those who are dying and have no family or friend to sit with

them in their final days, hours, minutes. Being with someone at the moment of death is a singular grace especially if someone has lived many years and dies from ‘natural causes’ or if someone has suffered from an illness and finally is relieved from the pain (I recall my own Mom’s death after fighting cancer). It is both a corporal and spiritual work of mercy to care for the sick and dying; by doing this we are carrying on the mission of Jesus by accompanying others in such a difficult time for them and their families. Believing in the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death, it is most appropriate for each of us to be concerned about care for those at the end of life through prayer and presence, advocating for good comprehensive medical care, promoting supportive structures, and offering the Sacraments of the Church and a dignified Funeral Liturgy when death arrives.

Gracious God, hope of those who call to You, we pray for our sisters and brothers who are approaching the end of life.

Help us to be of comfort to them in their last earthly hours. May they experience freedom from distress, spiritual healing,

and true consolation and trust in You. When they take their last breath, receive them to Yourself with mercy and love,

so that they may share happiness, peace, and the fullness of life with you forever.

L o o k i n g to t h e F u t u r e w i t h S o l a r As was written in last week’s bulletin, the Parish Finance Committee and our Facilities Manager have been exploring the installation of solar panels to provide our own source of electrical power and to drastically cut the monthly costs of electricity to the parish. We are working with EMCOR Services which has been fully vetted by the Diocese of Orange and has recently installed the solar panels at St. Kilian Parish in Mission Viejo. In fact, when you are over that way, look at what they have installed and get an idea of what we are thinking of. EMCOR is also going to do similar work at Christ Cathedral and a number of other parishes in the Diocese. The projected cost for our project is $310,000.00. We are looking to do this project in early 2018, making this the ‘case’ for the annual Pastoral Services Appeal for next year.

Just outside our bedroom window there is a twelve-foot tree which looks fairly healthy but also shows signs of age. Recently it started to lean precariously and we feared it might fall. Gardeners arrived at the scene and pounded a thick wooden post into the soil next to the tree and tied it to the trunk with strong rubber cables. The tree is now stable. It will not fall. It blooms with happiness. The tree is all of us, beset with doubts and disappointments, sickness and anxiety. Without the support of God’s grace, which reaches us through the hands of others, we shall fall. And we are also the post, when we act as a channel of God’s love, bringing comfort to the old, the sick, the poor and the marginalized. Finally, we are the stout cables, when both individually and as a parish family we connect those in need with the divine source of all strength and healing. The leaning tree was old and could have been considered useless. It could have been chopped down to make room for younger plants. After all, we live in a society which values youth over age. In our country it is estimated that one in eight – a total of 33.2 million Americans – is 65 or older. There are those who have no qualms about per-mitting the elimination of those deemed to be “dependent” or “unproductive” through assisted suicide and euthanasia. These we oppose as vigorously as we con-demn the killing of the unborn. Instead, as we celebrate Life and Dignity month, we thank our elderly sisters and brothers for all they have given to us, our country and our church and, like the strong wooden post, we support them in the gifts they have yet to give. ( by Bill Kramer, Life, Justice and Peace)

Thursday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m. we will have a Memorial Mass in remembrance of those whom we have lost from St. Timothy’s in the

past year. This is also a time when we remember all of our faithful departed. We in-vite you to bring a picture of your departed loved one to place on a table before the altar. These pictures will then be displayed in the chapel before the Blessed Sacra-ment during the month of November for prayer and remembrance. Please be sure that your name and phone number are on the back of the picture.
