The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cul- tures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but per- haps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a perse- cutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we return to using the green vestments of Ordinary Time on Sundays. Chang- ing colors give a sense of the progress of faith through the seasons of life. For centu- ries, the number of colors and the reasons underlying them were left to local custom. Over time, we settled on six colors to express the character of a day or season: white, red, green, violet, black, and rose. Black is seldom seen these days, replaced by white or violet. Rose, really a dusty pink shade, appears at most twice a year. What does the color green suggest to you? Green is new growth, olives, evergreens, glistening emer- alds, ripening pears, and fields at high summer. It suggests renewal, healing, fertility, peace, and harmony. In medieval Europe, green was the favorite color for brides! Did you know that drivers of green cars are the least likely to be stopped for speeding? Is it because of their own feelings of harmony and well being, or because law enforce- ment officers are filled with serenity when they see a green car whiz by? Take out a paint chart today and marvel at the many hues and names of green. The Church figured it out centuries ago: color really matters. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. The Bible Timeline makes reading the Bible not only easy, but exciting. In this study, you will learn the major people, places, events and themes of the Bible—getting the “big picture” of salvation history. Perhaps for the first time in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story. This then makes your Bible reading and even the Sunday Mass readings come alive like never before. The Bible Timeline will be offered at Madonna del Sasso Parish in the Student Activity Center every Thursday. Beginning at 6:30 pm, there will be a study/

workbook session. The video will begin at 7:00 pm and from 8:00 to 8:30 pm there will be a short pres-entation and an opportunity for questions. This series will be presented by Fr. Greg Sandman, Fr. Faith Formation...

Reflecting on God’s Word Two remarkable stories are told in today’s first reading from the first book of Kings and in the Gospel of Saint Luke. In the first reading, Elijah visits the house of a widow. Her son falls sick during his visit and eventually stops breathing. Elijah prays to God and breath returns to the child’s body, whereupon Elijah returns the boy to his mother. In the Gospel, we hear the remarkable story of the son of another widow. But in this instance, the widow’s son is already dead and his remains are in a coffin. This is one of those miracles that draws us in so vividly. Can you even imagine being one of the people standing near the coffin when the young man sits up and begins to speak after Jesus bids him arise? In a striking parallel to the first reading, Jesus gives the young man back to his mother. The people, we are told, are seized with fear. The next thing they do is glorify God. In our everyday lives, we are most likely not going to experience the rais-ing of a dead person back to life. Yet there are times when the Lord looks at us, helps us recognize our sinfulness or the ways that we prevent life from being lived to the fullest, and says, “I tell you, arise!” (Luke 7:14). A miracle of transformation can occur when we recognize the power of God’s love and mercy. Let our response be a prayer of praise and thanks as we glorify God. —Jerry Galipeau Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

THANK YOU - The members of the Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society would like to thank all of you who supported our May barbeque. Thanks to the Parish support, our Barbeque and Produce Booth were a huge success. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

We would also like to give a special thanks to David Balch, our Youth Minister, and the young men present for Confirmation class on the afternoon of May 5th. Without hesitation these young men stepped forward and assisted us with returning tables and chairs to the Parish hall. For those of us who had been working since 6:00 a.m. this act of kindness was a true blessing. We thank all of you and wish you the very best as you prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

RESPECT FOR LIFE MINISTRY (RLM)

We pray the Rosary & offer prayers on Tuesdays 2:30-3:30, Wednesdays 3-5 & Thursdays from 1-2 pm at 316 N. Main Street. All are Welcome!

OLD MISSION SAN JUAN BAUTISTA FIESTA

On Sunday, June 23, 2013, Old Mission San Juan Bautista will celebrate the feast of St. John the Baptist with a spectacular fiesta from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Starting with a procession at 11:00am, to the Historic Olive Grove led by a Dixieland Band, and a second procession at 1:00pm led by a folkloric group, the family-oriented continuous on-stage entertainment will include singers, folkloric dancing, traditional and contemporary Mexican music, costumed participants and the ever-popular chicken barbecue. Booths will abound with game for children and various ethnic foods and beverages. There is no charge to enter the grounds.

The popular chicken barbecue is cooked over charcoal fires in large open pits and the meals, including salad, beans and garlic bread, are prepared and served by mission volunteers for $8.00 per plate.

The fiesta is an annual fundraiser for the mission’s maintenance and restoration and continues an early California tradition. A second fund-raising effort is the annual raffle for prizes of $250.00, $500.00, $1,000.00 and the grand prize of $2000.00. Tickets are $2.00 each or six for ten dollars.
