Alcohol and the Family. During routine visits to families ina 7000-patient group practice a health visitor sought answers totwo questions: What was the likelihood that children in thesefamilies required or would in the future require care from thelocal authority, and what were the father’s drinking habits ? 400families were interviewed. Predictably, children were more likelyto be in need of care when the father drank frequently outsidethe home, but the man who drank once a week unaccompaniedby his wife was the father of children less likely to need carethan families with fathers who went out for a drink rarely if at allThe proportions of children in need of care were 20% for theonce-a-week drinker, compared with 31% for the occasionalindulger or total abstainer and 55% for the more frequent orcompulsive drinker.
