The Donkey & Palm Sunday

G.K. Chesterton talks about the donkey, the strange,

awkward creature that's often the butt of jokes. Why else

would calling someone an ass be an insult? His ears are

like "errant wings" and he is the "devil's walking parody

on all four-footed things." Yet, Chesterton claims a

nobility to the humble donkey, for it was a donkey that

bore Christ on Palm Sunday. That's what the final

stanza references. The donkey, being dumb, thinks it his

hour when he states, “For I had my hour; One far fierce

hour and sweet: There was a shout about my ears, and palms before my feet.”

The Donkey B Y G . K . C H E S T E R T O N ( 1 9 2 7 )

When f ishes f lew and forests walked And f igs grew upon thorn,

Some moment when the moon was blood Then surely, I was born.

With monstrous head and s ickening cry

And ears l ike errant wings, The devi l ’s walking parody On al l four-footed th ings.

The ta t tered out law of the ear th,

Of ancient crooked wil l ; Starve, scourge, der ide me: I am dumb,

I keep my secret s t i l l .

Fools! For I a lso had my hour; One far f ierce hour and sweet :

There was a shout about my ears , And palms before my feet .

Unto us – Spike Milligan Somewhere at some time They committed themselves to me And so I was! Tiny in shape Lusting to live! I hung in my pulsing cave.

Soon they knew of me My mother - my father I had no say in my being I lived on trust And love Tho' I couldn't think Each part of me was saying A silent 'Wait for me! I will bring you love!'

I was taken Blind, naked, defenseless, By the hand of one Whose good name Was graven on a brass plate in Wimpole Street, And dropped on the sterile floor Of a foot-operated plastic waste bucket.

There was no Queen's Counsel, To take my brief. The cot I might have warmed Stood in Harrod's shop window. When my passing was told My father smiled, No grief filled my empty space. My death was celebrated With two tickets to see Danny La Rue Who was pretending to be a woman Like my mother was...

Spike Milligan was the creator of a new form of humor in Great Britain in a show called “The Goons Show.” It led to comedians like Monty Python and a host of absurd and irreverent comedians including Peter Sellers of Pink Panther movies fame. Spike Milligan wrote a famous poem about abortion from an aborted baby’s point of view, Unto Us. It is really worth reading and reflecting on.

2 disciples leaving the Church on Easter Sunday for Emmaus – they quit -

after the traumatic and chaotic disappointment of Good Friday.

Don’t Quit When things go wrong as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill, When the funds are low, and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about, When he might have won if he stuck it out; Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,

You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far;

So, stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit, It’s when things seem worse,

That you must not quit.

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil 3:4)
