Iran rejects UN sanctions resolution draftAP- Iran on Wednesday dismissed as illegitimate a draft U.N. Security Council resolution seeking to impose harsher sanctions against Tehran for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.Mojtaba Hashemi Samareh, a top adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said the draft proposed by the U.S. was a reactionary response to a deal in which Iran agreed to ship much of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey.The surprise deal, brokered by Turkey and Brazil Monday, didnt ease concerns in the West that Irans nuclear program has military dimensions primarily because Tehran has said it will continue to enrich uranium to higher levels.Uranium enriched to a low level is used for nuclear fuel, but if processed to much higher levels it can be fashioned into a weapon.The draft resolution being discussed at Security Council has no legitimacy at all, the

official IRNA news agency quoted Samareh as saying Wednesday after a Cabinet meeting.The deal would deprive Iran at least temporarily of some of the stocks of enriched uranium that it would need to process further to create a weapon, if that were its intention. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.But because seven months have elapsed since the agreement was originally floated and Iran continues to enrich it would still have enough material to make such a weapon even if Tehran shipped out the original amount stipulated by the U.N.The material would be returned to Iran in the form of fuel rods, which cannot be processed further. Iran needs the fuel rods to power an aging medical research reactor in Tehran that produces isotopes for cancer treatment.But to the U.S. and its allies the deal is to little now too late.The United States and its

Western allies won crucial support from Russia and China for new sanctions against Iran Tuesday but face tough opposition from non-permanent U.N. AFP- Iran voiced exasperation on Wednesday at US-led international rejection of a hard-won nuclear fuel deal, saying major powers would be discrediting themselves if they pressed for fresh UN sanctions.Deal brokers Turkey and Brazil, meanwhile, urged their fellow members on the 15-member UN Security Council not to impose new sanctions, the Brazilian foreign ministry said.Brazil and Turkey are convinced that it is time to give a chance for negotiations and to avoid measures that are detrimental to a peaceful solution, read the letter signed by their foreign ministers.The move came after Washington submitted a resolution for a fourth round of sanctions, after Brazil and Turkey on Monday forged a compromise accord they hailed as a step toward ending Irans years-old standoff with the West.Under the deal, the Islamic republic agreed to ship out much of its stockpile of low enriched uranium to neighbouring Turkey in exchange for fuel for a research reactor.This agreement is a new fact that has to be evaluated, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, who led the Iran-Brazil-Turkey negotiations, insisted in Brasilia.Iran said any new sanctions effort was doomed to fail.

Jailed Iranian filmmaker on hunger strike

AP- Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker and opposition supporter Jafar Panahi has gone on a hunger strike to protest his imprisonment, according to a pro-reform Iranian website.The Rahesabz website quoted the filmmakers wife, Tahereh Saeidi, as saying the director stopped eating and drinking Sunday morning.She said he plans to continue his protest until he is allowed to see his family, meet with a lawyer and be set free pending trial.Saeidi told the website she spoke to her husband by phone Tuesday.Panahi was taken into custody in early March. A state prosecutor has said the detention is not political and that the filmmaker is suspected of committing unspecified offenses.Panahi supported the opposition in Irans presidential election last June. He was briefly detained last summer when he visited the graves of victims of Tehrans postelection unrest and was later banned from

traveling abroad.Iran has banned several of his films.At the Cannes Film Festival, fellow Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami on Tuesday called for Panahis release and spoke about the challenges of making films in Iran.The fact that a director is imprisoned is in and of itself intolerable, Kiarostami said at the French festival. When one puts an artist in prison, its art itself thats imprisoned, and for that reason, we must act.
