ALI and ALI 7: Hey Brother, Can You Spare Some Hope and Change?

A Neworld Theatre ProductionBy Camyar Chai, Guillermo Verdecchia and Marcus YoussefDirected by Guillermo Verdecchia, Starring Marcus Youssef, Camyar Chai, Laara Sadiq and Raugi YuCo-commissioned by The Cultch, in association with Cahoots Theatre Projects (Toronto)

    Where and When: The Cultch Historic Theatre, April 14 24 @8pm; Apr 17 & 24 @2pm(No performance Apr 18 & 19)Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, April 28 May 1 @8pmCosmopolis/Cosmopolitics Conference, SFU Harbour Centre, May 6 @2pm

Worried about H1N1? Lose your shirt in the economic meltdown? Boyfriend tell you hes polyamorous? Concerned about Canadas medal count? Relax! Canadas most famous Agrabanian refugees are back, and theyre way worse off than you. Yep, Ali and Ali return. Brand New Show! In 2005 Neworld Theatre brought you Ali and Ali and the aXes of Evil. The Seattle Post said it must be the funniest exposition of American foreign policy ever devised. But its not just funny. Its also troubling and poignant. The Vancouver Province called it the best Canadian political play of the 21st century, and the funniest. (The Toronto Star guy also said we were like a bunch of shouting amateurs but hes currently undergoing extensive re-education). Now Ali and Ali creators Camyar Chai, Guillermo Verdecchia and Marcus Youssef turn their idiosyncratic brand of post-identity satire to (yet another) whole new world. While the Devil President Bush has been replaced by a Nobel Prize Winner whose middle name is Hussein, Ali and Ali have been in Vancouver for five years, eking out a refugee claimants living in the back of a Falafel shop on the East Side, writing their new

show. Its the optimistic Obama tribute, Ali and Ali 7: Hey Brother, Can You Spare Some Hope and Change featuring homegrown sock puppets, interactive veils, and a chorus of the African-American revolutionaries! But who is this person constantly interrupting the show, and why does she have so many troubling questions? How many times did the Alis rent A Few Good Men? What were they doing in Axerbaijan? Whats the Al-Jihadi Mosque, whos immigration consultant Coco Pinoy? And is Agraba really on the Uzbeki/Lebanese border? Ali and Ali risk deportation under the fictional PEIU Act (Permission to Expel Immigrant Undesirables) based on Canadas real life Security Certificates under which five muslim men have been held for nine years with no charges and no access to the evidence against them. Ali and Ali 7 co-creator Youssef says, midway through watching the hearings of security certificate detainee Mahmoud Jaballah, I turned to Guillermo and said this process is so absurd, the only people who can deal with it are Ali and Ali.Co-starring Raugi Yu as Yogi Roo, the Chinese-Canadian utility actor and Laara Sadiq as the rabid fan.Afros, as always, by Moammar Ghadafii

Suzuki Foundation :Plan for Olympic flame encores harms green legacy

The province- The David Suzuki Foundation says plans to ignite the Olympic flame in Vancouver on special occasions post-Olympics undermines the 2010 Games' green legacy. In early February, the foundation awarded Games organizers a bronze medal for efforts to reduce the event's climate impact. That was before a legacy partnership between VANOC and sponsor Terasen Gas Inc. was announced, which could see continued burning of fossil fuels from the waterfront cauldron after the close of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.Deborah Carlson of the Suzuki Foundation said keeping the cauldron burning indefinitely sends the wrong message to the public it flies in the face of the energy-saving measures in the new venues and the Olympic Village.

The foundation isn't upset enough to change their rating of the 2010 Games, though. So far we are sticking with the bronze, Carlson said.A representative of VANOC, who asked not to be named, said future decisions on firing up the cauldron will rest with Terasen Gas, the City of Vancouver and the B.C. government. The cauldron will be a permanent fixture in Coal Harbour due to funding from Terasen Gas, said Terasen representative Joyce Wagenaar. There may be in the future special occasions or celebrations for the city or province where the cauldron will be lit, Wagenaar told The Province. In a recent press release on Terasen's cauldron contribution, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said: We deeply appreciate Terasen's legacy to the people of Vancouver. This

cauldron and its flame will draw people not only during February and March 2010 but in the years to come. However on Monday, his office said the statement referred to the legacy of the cauldron, not to plans to fire it up after the Games.Thousands continue to flock to the cauldron, and a group of climate-change activists were visible among flame fans on Monday. When asked whether the flame should be extinguished for good or burn on after the Games, a woman from Germany who identified herself as A. von Appen said: North America is way behind Europe on climate-change [response] you should focus on that and not this little [Olympic flame issue.]I think it's fine [to re-light the flame] for special occasions, said Mike Hrabok of Calgary.Andy Meija of Nanaimo said, considering how little fuel the Olympic flame burns, firing up the cauldron doesn't make a difference, symbolically or otherwise. But his wife Marie disagreed: I'm with David [Suzuki] on this one.According to VANOC, the cauldron burns natural gas, and estimated fuel consumption is one per cent of the direct carbon footprint of the Games.

North Van Liberal MLA Jane Thornthwaite admits impaired-driving charges

The Province- A North Vancouver MLA admits she is facing drunk-driving charges after being stopped at a roadblock early Tuesday.North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite was driving home from a night of Olympic events including visits to the Northern Pavillion and Sochi House when she was stopped at about 1 a.m. by North Vancouver RCMP.In a statement issued Tuesday, the Liberal backbencher and mother of three, apologized for her actions.Last night ... I was stopped at a roadcheck by RCMP in North Vancouver and am now facing impaired driving charges, she said.My actions were inexcusable. Drinking and driving is dangerous and completely unacceptable; I know that and make no excuses for what I did, she said.I apologize to my family, my friends, my colleagues, and especially my constituents who put their faith in me. I failed to meet the standards I set for myself as a mother and as a public official.A government official with the B.C. Liberal caucus said Thornthwaites blood alcohol level was 0.11 per cent. The legal limit is 0.08 per cent. She has not been officially charged, but said in her statement that she accepts full responsibility for her actions and will co-operate fully with

Crown counsel.I know what I did was wrong and I will take full responsibility for my actions, she said. I intend to work hard to regain the trust of my constituents in light of this serious mistake and I want to apologize to everyone for my actions.New Democrat house leader MLA Mike Farnworth was hesitant on commenting, but said:Clearly drinking and driving is completely unacceptable and I think its appropriate that she takes responsibility for her actions, Farnworth said. What needs to happen at this point, is the police investigation needs to play out.Bob Rorison of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers Vancouver chapter said he hopes Thornthwaite will continue to be accountable for the incident.Lets just hope shes going to be open and transparent about the situation and not hide behind any sort of special privilege because of her position, Rorison said. Lets hope shell deal with this as someone in the public eye should.Thornthwaite was elected MLA in the 2009 general provincial election. She is a member of the Select Standing Committees on Children and Youth, Education and Finance and Government Services and the former chair of the North Vancouver School Board. She is expected to appear in Court in April to face charges.

    Stats Canada: Canadian

immigrants struggling to find jobs in their fields

The Province- Only one-quarter of immigrants educated outside Canada are working in medical, law and teaching occupations for which theyre trained, according to a report from Statistics Canada. In 2006, 284,000 employed foreign-educated immigrants in Canada had degrees that normally would lead to work in regulated occupations, which the agency defines as those governed by regulatory or professional associations and requiring specific credentials to practise.Of those, just 24 per cent worked in a job that matched their education. In contrast, 53 per cent of the 163,000 employed immigrants who were educated in Canada had jobs that matched their training, while the match rate was 62 per cent among the Canadian-born.These match rates vary widely in different occupations, the report finds. Fifty-six per cent of foreign-educated doctors and nurses were working in the jobs for which they trained, compared to just 24 per cent of those who studied teaching and 19 per cent for those who studied engineering, the most common field of study for immigrants educated outside Canada. Law graduates had the lowest match rate, at 12 per cent.

Clement Seyi, 35, had a good job as the chief accountant at a large forestry and wood-processing company in his native Cameroon before he immigrated to Canada with his wife and two children in June.In my native country, we dont have the same opportunities, he says. Thats why I took the risk to come here as a skilled worker. With French as his mother tongue, Seyi chose to settle in Winnipeg in hopes that a smaller anglophone city would provide a lower cost of living and ample opportunity to learn English. Hes been attending English classes full-time and attending the Success Skills Centre in

Winnipeg to brush up on North American accounting software, but hes encountered some stumbling blocks to landing a job in his field. When I moved here, I set up my resume but I noticed that it doesnt fit with some requirements. One thing I noticed is that when you dont have any experience (in Canada), its one barrier, he says, adding that hes working as a volunteer accountant for a friends business to gain Canadian experience. I think thats what I need. The gap narrows but still persists for those who have been in Canada for a long time. Foreign-educated immigrants living in Canada for 10 years

have a match rate of 31 per cent, compared to 55 per cent for Canadian-educated immigrants and 62 per cent for the Canadian-born.Across the country, match rates were highest in Eastern Canada and particularly in Newfoundland and Labrador, while Alberta and Saskatchewan, with their strong labour markets, also had match rates above the national average. Immigrants in Quebec and in British Columbia have match rates below the national average, while those in Ontario were on par with the national numbers.

United Nations General Assembly Recognizes 21 March as International Day of Nowruz

US Calls Iranian Nuclear Offer Unacceptable

VOA- The United States Tuesday said an Iranian offer to trade its low-enriched uranium for more highly-processed fuel for a research reactor is unacceptable. The State Department said U.S. diplomats are aggressively pursuing the idea of additional sanctions against Tehran because of its non-cooperation on the nuclear issue. The Iranian offer, in a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was described as Tehrans first official reply to an IAEA confidence-building proposal offered last October. But the State Department says the Iranian message does not contain anything that hasnt been heard before, and that Tehran continues to back-track from its initial acceptance of the IAEA plan.Under the proposal offered in October with big-power backing, Iran would have shipped most of its growing stockpile of low-enriched uranium abroad in return for the provision, several months later, of more highly-enriched fuel for a Tehran reactor producing nuclear isotopes for medical purposes. In its message to the IAEA, Iran said Tuesday it is willing to trade low-enriched uranium for reactor fuel but the exchange would have to be simultaneous and take place on Iranian soil.At a news briefing, State

Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley called the Iranian offer a red herring - a diversion that would do nothing to reassure the world community that its nuclear program is peaceful. Under the Iranian proposal, there would be an exchange, but that would require the international community to front its own fuel to satisfy Iranian needs, while Iran continues to violate its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. So this response, the Iranian counterproposal, is unacceptable, as weve made clear before and well continue to work within the IAEA but also will continue to consult on appropriate next steps including prospective sanctions, he said.Crowley said the Obama administration is still open to engagement with Iran but that it is working more aggressively on a possible fourth round of U.N. sanctions because of its failure to accept last Octobers good faith offer by the IAEA. We have not closed the door to further engagement. But you actually have to have a willing partner to engage. The fact is Iran makes these series of statements, day after day, week after week. But it refuses to come to the table and actually negotiate in good faith, and address the concerns that the international community has, he said.

    Iran Accuses West Of

    Supporting Detained Sunni Rebel Leader

RFE/RL- Iranian officials have accused Western countries of supporting the leader of the Jundallah Sunni Muslim rebel group, whose arrest was announced earlier today. Iran described the capture of its most wanted fugitive as a great defeat for the United States and Britain.Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi made the comment after Iranian state media announced that security forces had arrested Abdulmalik Rigi, whose group has been waging a low-level insurgency in southeastern Iran.At a press conference, Moslehi said the country has solid evidence that the United States and some European Union countries supported the rebel leader in his terrorist activities. We are warning the United States and Britains intelligence services to stop interfering in Irans internal affairs and supporting terrorism, Moslehi said. They have been supporting this group and they should take their hands off groups like this who are involved in spilling innocent blood, because they earn a bad name for the European and American nations. In a brief statement, the British Foreign Office said Rigis arrest would be a blow against terrorism, which Britain unreservedly welcomes.

The General Assembly this afternoon recognized the International Day of Nowruz, a spring festival of Persian origin, and moved back the dates of the next high-level dialogue on Financing for Development, as it continued its sixty-fourth session.

According to the preamble of the resolution on the International Day (document A/64/L.30/Rev.2), Nowruz, which means new day, is celebrated on 21 March, the day of the vernal equinox, by more than 300 million people worldwide as the beginning of the new year.

It has been celebrated for over 3,000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions. The Assembly called on Member States that celebrate the festival to study its history and traditions with a view to disseminating that knowledge among the international community and organizing annual commemoration events.Welcoming the inclusion of Nowruz into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 30 September 2009, the text notes the festivals affirmation of life in harmony with nature, the awareness of the inseparable link between constructive labour and natural cycles of renewal and the solicitous and respectful attitude towards natural sources of life. The text was introduced by Azerbaijans representative, who said that, as a holiday celebrated in many parts of the world with themes important to all humanity, Nowruz encouraged intercultural dialogue and understanding. Speaking after the Assembly took action on the draft, the representative of Iran marked its adoption by quoting lines of the Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi that expressed the holidays theme of rebirth on our planet and in our souls.
