Naging sikat naman siya kahit papano

The holding early last May of the “Search for Hybrid Rice Highest Yielder” in Nueva Ecija, was the brainchild of Provincial Agriculturist Serafin Santos to promote the benefits of hybrid rice farming. With the assistance and all-out support given by local and private individuals and entities, the project was, on the whole, very successful, giving agriculture a big boost. To be sure, the farmers will greatly benefit from this endeavor.

Keep “it” up.-o0o-

Well said, Doc. -o0o-

Over 1,000 farmers in 32 towns of Nueva Ecija attended the affair which was highlighted by the giving of cash prizes and plaques of recognition to the contest winners, courtesy of Henry Lim, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of SL Agritech Corp. A rice thresher, a farm tractor and a farm engine were also given by Lim to the first, second and third prize winners, respectively.

Others who graced the occasion were former Food Minister Jesus Tanchanco, Provincial Administrator Alejandro Abesamis, PhilRice Executive Director Ruben Miranda; Rita O. Lim (the better half of Mr. Lim), Dr. Noel Mamicpic, Cathy Galura and Josie Farnacio of SL Agritech Corp.; Dr. Santiago Obien, now with the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) and Dr. Ruben Sevilleja of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU).

-o0o-Much has been said and written about hybrid rice – that this

miracle crop is a big boost to our rice production program, that it is profitable and that hybrid rice technology would cut down rice importation thereby saving for the country billions of pesos every year etc. etc.

Sabi nga, they oppose just for the sake of opposing and they comment just for the sake of commenting.

-o0o-We remember the statement made about a year ago by a Cabinet

member that: “It is more cheaper for the government to import rice than for us to produce it.”

The country is losing some P30-billion in wasted rice due to lack of post-harvest facilities such as palay dryers and rice mills, according to the Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (BPRE), an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

During the drying opera-tion alone, 4.5 percent of palay harvest is lost due to inadequate or inefficient drying facilities or a loss of 408,764 metric tons (MT) of milled rice.

“In our country’s effort to increase food production, it is important that we give utmost attention to the prevention of losses through the develop-ment of post-harvest research and technology,” said Ricardo L. Cachuela, BPRE executive director.

In his report to Sec. Ar-thur Yap, Cachuela said the DA-BPRE initiative is part of President Arroyo’s FIELDS program, which stands for Fertilizer, Irrigation, Exten-tion, Loans, Dryers Seeds and other postharvest facilities to promote the full growth and

development of the grains in-dustry.

Cachuela said palay farmers will be saving billions of pesos every year if they use efficient drying facilities.

“Ang pagpapatuyo ng palay ay isa sa pinakamaselang na gawain matapos ang anihan. Ang porsyento ng nawawalang palay kung hindi wasto ang pagpa-patuyo ay umaabot ng limang porsyento. Kung may inaaning 16.2 milyong metriko toneladang palay bawa’t taon, ang halaga ng nasasayang na palay ay mga P10-bilyon,” Cachuela said.

Arnel Ramir M.. Apaga, director of the agency’s training and extension department, said BPRE is distributing this year 688 flat bed dryers to quali-fied irrigators’ associations and farmers organizations all over the country, in coordination with the DA-regional field units.

The program, he said, is aimed at uplifting the well-being of the farmers by helping them reduce the drying losses in rice and, at the same time,

SIGNING OF AGREEMENT – Officials of SL Agritech Corp. and the state-owned Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corp. (BADC), signed a memo-randum of agreement recently whereby SL Agritech will export an initial 500 metric tons (MT) of its parental seeds to Bangladesh, becoming another hybrid seed production site of SL Agritech. SL Agritech has been exporting the same seed variety to Indonesia since 2006. According to Henry Lim, chairman and CEO, his firm will also export sometime this year parental seeds to Vietnam.

Bangladesh, one of the world’s biggest rice consuming countries, will be another hybrid seed production site of SL Agritech Corp.

“We already have one in Indonesia and towards the end of this year, we will have another production farm in Vietnam,” said Henry Lim, SL Agritech Corp. chairman and chief executive officer.

In a partnership agreement signed recently with the state-owned Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corp. (BADC), SL Agritech, the country’s leading hybrid rice seeds producer, is exporting an initial 500 metric tons (MT) of its parental seeds to Bangladesh.

“They will produce our hybrid seeds initially in 250 hectares which will produce 500 MT of F1 or SL-8 hybrid rice seeds,” Lim said.

In 2006, SL Agritech shipped 500 MT of SL-8H hybrid rice seeds to Indonesia, worked out by the firm with PT Sang Hyang Seri, an Indonesian government firm. Lim said his company will also export its high-yielding seeds to Vietnam sometime this year or early next year.

With a population of 230 million, Indonesia envisions to plant up to five million hectares of hybrid rice seeds in the next five years.

“Starting this year, we will no longer export our SL hybrid seeds to that country as they will already be producing them in big quantity. They have initially allocated over 1,600 hectares for the purpose,” Lim said.

According to Lim, SL Agritech exported a total of 550 metric

Bangladesh is another hybrid rice seed production site of SL Agritechtons (MT) of SL-8H hybrid seeds to Indonesia. The same year, it again exported another 750 MT to that country as part of its ef-forts to accelerate growth in its rice production.

“I consider all this a big achievement not only for SL Agritech Corp. but for our coun-try as well, since it was more than 28 years ago when we first exported rice to other countries. Now, we rank No. 3 after China and India as hybrid rice seeds exporter,” he said.

Lim, however, said SL Agritech will limit its seeds ex-portation “to ensure that we will always have ready supply for our own farmers.”

Meanwhile, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is providing the Department of Agriculture (DA) a grant of P649 million for the construction of four modern rice processing centers in Pangasinan, Iloilo, Bohol and Davao del Sur.

Agriculture Undersecretary Berna Romulo Puyat said the government is allocating P136 million as counterpart to bank-roll the rice processing proj-

She said the DA will likewise

provide P104 million for the proj-ect and the balance from the local government units.

“The construction of the rice processing centers was encour-aged by South Korea to promote efficient postharvest operations for our palay farmers through mechanization and automation,” Puyat said.

Ricardo L. Cachuela, execu-tive director of Bureau of Post-harvest Research and Extension

(BPRE), an attached agency of the DA, said the four rice processing centers will be built in Sta. Barbara in Pangasinan, Pototan in Iloilo, Pilar in Bohol, and Matanao in Davao del Sur.

“When finished, the farm-ers’ income will increase once they avail themselves of the benefits of the post harvest facilities,” Cachuela said.

Cachuela said the four rice processing projects will cover 9,292 hectares of rice farms and will generate 2,737 jobs during the construction phase, and another 4,627 jobs in the next 15 years.

DEMAND FOR SL AGRITECHHYBRID, SPECIALTY RICE uP;SEES P10-B SALES IN 6 YEARS

By JENNY NGBullish over the prospects of

the increase in the demand for hy-brid rice seeds and specialty rice, SL Agritech Corp. expects net sales could reach P10 billion in 2015.

SL Agritech chairman and

'Our rice products are geared for the A-B market as well as

the upper C market.'chief executive officer Henry Lim projects that net sales for hybrid rice seeds could reach P5 billion, while net sales for specialty rice will also reach P5 billion.

“In five years’ time, net sales of hybrid rice seeds could reach as much as P5 billion. We’re looking to expand hybrid rice seed produc-tion and increase hectarage where we can produce hybrid rice seeds,” Lim told reporters in a recent press briefing at his office in Makati City.

SL Agritech is opening new markets for hybrid rice seeds.

Aside from Indonesia, where the company is exporting hybrid rice seeds, SL Agritech also signed a memorandum of agreement with the Bangladesh Agricultural De-

velopment Corp. (BADC).Under the agreement, SL

Agritech will assist BADC to increase hybrid rice production. From 250 hectares, hybrid rice seed production in Bangladesh will be expanded to a minimum of 600 hectares. SL Agritech will also export seeds to Vietnam. The com-pany is already exporting hybrid rice seeds to Indonesia.

Lim said production for hybrid rice may expand to around 800,000 hectares in five years. The average production for every hectare is around two tons.

For fiscal year ending May, the company sold around 130,000 bags of hybrid rice seeds worth more than P500 million.

SL Agritech managing consul-tant Marshal Aaron disclosed that increasing demand for specialty rice like Jasponica and Miponica varietie4s marketed under the Dona Maria brand will boost net sales.

“For fiscal year ending May 2010, we see net sales for specialty rice to double to P500 million,” Aaron said.

He said the company engages

in contract growing of rice using the SL-8H variant. During the dry season, around 2,000 hectares in Laguna and Nueva Ecija were planted to rice variants that will be sold by the company.

Jasponica rice is a cross be-tween Jasmine Thai and Japonica while the Miponica variety is a cross between Milagrosa and Ja-sponica. Both varieties are known for their aroma and taste.

“Our rice products are geared for the A-B market as well as the upper C market,” Aaron said.

A road, according to the dic-tionary, “is a long stretch with a smoothed or paved surface, made for traveling by motor vehicle, etc.”

But to a big number of rice farmers in Nueva Ecija (and else-where in the country), roads are not for motor vehicles alone but also for drying their palay during harvest time.

“We have no recourse but to dry our rice harvest on the roads because we do not have any dry-ing facility. What makes it more difficult for us to dry our harvest is the lack of wide and long ce-mented roads in our municipal-ity,” the farmers said.

“Ganyan ang aming prob-lema tuwing panahon ng anihan lalu na nga kung tag-ulan. Ilal-atag namin sa kalsada ang aming kaaaning palay kung umaaraw, pero kapag biglang umulan, halos hindi namin malaman ang gagawin para kolektahin ang mga nasabing palay para nga hindi mabasa, “ they said.

Tomas at the same time cited the Bagong Buhay Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BBMPC) of Ba-rangay Mabini in Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija, whose farmer-mem-bers, she said, have been posting an average harvest of 190 cavans per hectare using the SL hybrid rice variety and the latest farming technology.

The group is headed by Flor-encio Sudoy, himself an SL-8H hybrid rice farmer.
