Understanding ChelationChelation is a biochemical

method of removing heavy metals. It means literally

“claw-like” or “to grab onto.” It’s most popular use these days is in the treatment of hardening of the arteries. The theory is that the plaque that “hardens” the arteries has a lot of calcium in it. By exposing the plaque to the right chelating agent, calcium is pulled out and the plaque dissolves. Chelation was developed over 50 years ago to treat lead poisoning. Since then several chelating agents have been discovered. EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid) is the chelating agent of choice for hardening of the arteries. It pulls out many heavy metals including lead, copper, cadmium, aluminum, iron, and, of course, calcium. As mentioned last month, DMPS and DMSA are other chelating agents used primarily to pull out mercury. In treating hardening of the arteries, EDTA must pass over the plaque in order to grab onto the calcium. Therefore, it must circulate through the blood vessels. The most straight forward way of doing this is to administer it intravenously. This is the preferred method. It requires an IV drip filled with a half a liter of fluid including vitamins and minerals and usually takes about three hours to administer. The average number of treatments to clean out clogged arteries is around 30. The advantage of this method is that it dissolves

plaque throughout the entire 60,000 miles of blood vessels that transverse the body verses the one or two inches that are addressed with by-pass surgery and angioplasty. Cleared vessels allow nutrients and oxygen into cells and waste products out, relieving numerous problems associated with hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis). There are various ways of determining plaque activity in a person. It all too often comes to our attention only when it is severe enough to cause problems by blocking the flow of blood to critical areas. The worst-case scenarios involve heart attacks and strokes. Some people get warning signs such as angina (heaviness or pain in the chest) or shortness of breath or transient numbness on one side of the body or the other. Blood tests that are available and can be requested at yearly checkups include homocysteine and C-reactive protein. The tread mill EKG is another way of evaluating your heart by pushing it to the limits of exertion and seeing if it gets enough blood flow to keep it functioning adequately. Angiograms are useful to view the blood vessels using dye and x-rays, though it is invasive and the dye itself can cause the blood vessels to contract giving a false impression of how clogged they really are. Recently, CAT scans of the heart have been used to calculate

the amount of calcium in the arteries and, therefore, the amount of plaque. Chelation is regulated through organizations such as the American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM). And, though it has not won wide spread acceptance from cardiologists, many members of ACAM are cardiologists and cardiac surgeons looking for more permanent solutions to heart disease.Dr. Miles has a clinic in Catalina. Location, hours and other information can be found online at www.catalinaclinic.com. He is planning an Open House on Saturday, July 12th from 2 to 6 so people can come by if they’d like and see the place and talk with Dr. Miles.

Jesus – Nut Case or Savior?

Occasionally we hear, “Jesus was a good man, but

not God’s son.” That speaker is confused about Jesus. The crowd in John chapter 7 was also confused. Verse 12: Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” Verse 20: “You are demon-possessed.” A good man, a liar, or a nut case-all three opinions are wrong, but the “Good Man” position, while it sounds less judgmental, is not logical. Jesus claimed to be God’s son. For a Jew, who wouldn’t even speak or write God’s name, this was the worst blasphemy. But he said it repeatedly.• As a child, when his parents finally found him at the Temple: ‘’Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2.49)• When talking to the Jewish authorities: “The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak/or me.” (Jn. 10:25)

IfJesus was a nut case, you can’t criticize him, whether he claimed to be God’s son, or an avocado. A crazy person says crazy things. But if Jesus wasn’t crazy, then either he was the son of God, or he taught a lie that got people killed. So the choices are:• Jesus might have been a nut case who believed he was God’s son. • Or he might have been a murderous liar.

• Or he might have been God’s son. But those are the only choices. To say that Jesus was a good man, but not God’s son violates common sense. We believe that God’s word is true and logical. We’re the Church of Christ, meeting in Oracle: 2425 El Paseo. One of the Oldest Mines in North AmericaThe guidebooks directing me to the Camp Verde salt

mine are short and sort of vague. I was directed to the correct road, Salt Mine Road and then the

instructions said only to look for a bright white hill. I am worried I might drive right past the salt mine. Instead, the bright white hills of the salt mine stand out like a sore thumb on the landscape. I park the car and walk through the gate. The guidebook also mentioned being sure to bring sunglasses and as soon as I entered the gates the glare off the bright white hills was blinding. I walk through the narrow gates and a short path takes me to the remains of some sort of mine mechanism, almost all that is left of what was once a thriving commercial operation is dozens of rotting timbers, hulks of rusting machinery and a few crumbling foundations. Much of the wood has salt crystals growing upon it as if the salt is intent on slowly conquering the world one crystal at a time, spreading slowly across the landscape like an invading fungus. There are large iron relics scattered across the basin, movers, shakers and sorters from when the mine was active. The Camp Verde salt mine was active in the 1920’s and 30’s but when they first started digging, the miners unearthed unexpected treasure. According to author Roger Naylor “During the 1920’s, employees of the mine’s operators, Western Chemical, began unearthing artifacts such as woven yucca sandals, ax handles and torches. After a mummified body was discovered, an anthropologist was brought in. Ancient tunnels were found, and it was determined that salt was mined throughout the Sinagua era, about 1100 to 1400 AD.” This makes the Camp Verde salt mines one of the oldest underground mines in North America. It is a cool and somewhat other worldly looking place to Camp Verde Salt Mine Gary Every | Crier

wander around. There is not a lot of plant life, scraggly bushes scattered here and there. Most of the earth is normal looking, although a little parched, but anywhere there is erosion the salt is exposed. In places where entire hillsides have been exposed the bright white glare is almost blinding. Two ravines snake through the shallow

valley side by side, one is brown dirt and the other is bright white. Large pieces of metal machinery appear here and there. I try and guess the purpose of some of the decaying timbers and their crumbling foundations. Here and there, in little white pockets, small mountains of crystals build into little exquisite, exotic peaks and towers. It looks like a miniature movie set for a beautiful fantasy with wizards and elves. The Camp Verde salt mine has long been a favorite for the state’s rock hounds. According to Gem Trails of Arizona, crystallized specimens of halite, glauberite, gypsum, calcite, aragonite, and kyanite can be found there as well as many other lesser known minerals. The Verde Valley Archeology Center in Camp Verde is currently working in a partnership with the Forest Service to preserve the mine as a heritage sight. So if you are in the Camp Verde area drop in at the old salt mine which is located off the side of Salt Mine Road –just look for the bright white hills and you can’t miss it.

Around 19 amateur historians and docents of the Arizona Historical Society visited Oracle and the San Pedro Valley recently. The historical tour was organized by Oracle resident Evaline Auerbach and the Arizona Historical Society Docent Council. The tour started at El Rancho Robles where everyone checked in that were spending the night at the historic guest ranch. The group toured Oracle on the 24th traveling in an air conditioned bus. They stopped at the Acadia Ranch Museum, St. Helen’s Catholic Church, old Mountain View Hotel (now the Baptist Church), and the Oracle Union Church where Nancy Patten spoke to the group about the history of the Rock Church. They then stopped for lunch at the Patio Café.

The afternoon tour included stops at the entrance of the Cherry Valley Ranch, the Kannally Ranch House in Oracle State Park, American Flag Ranch and Hi Jinks Ranch. At the American Flag Ranch, owned and managed by the Oracle Historical Society, they were one of the first groups allowed to visit inside and see the new renovations at the ranch house building. The group made their way back in the air conditioned bus along Cody Loop Road making stops for photographs. Back at El Rancho Robles they were given a tour of the ranch including their new “Speak Easy” by the General Manager Zach Nichols. As guests of the ranch they enjoyed a BYOB social hour followed by a buffet dinner and entertainment provided by guitar player Diane Davis. El Rancho Robles was named “one of the best things about living in the west” in the May issue of Sunset Magazine’s

“Guide to Living in the West”. After a good night’s sleep and a buffet breakfast at the ranch, the tour headed down into the San Pedro Valley. Stops were made at the Miner’s Memorial in Mammoth, the Pusch/Zellweger Ranch (PZ Ranch) and a viewpoint overlooking the Camp Grant Massacre site. The Camp Grant Massacre has been called Arizona’s bloodiest day. On April 30, 1871 six Americans, 48 Mexicans and 92 Tohono O’Odham killed 144 Aravaipa and Pinal Apaches, all but eight women and children. The historical tour went well and was enjoyed not only by the tourists but by the people of Oracle that hosted them. It bodes well for those people wanting to attract more people to the area either through ecotourism, recreational opportunities or historical tours. Oracle and the Copper Corridor have a lot of all three to offer.

May and Mother’s Day are over and June arrives with summer vacation from school and Father’s Day. We always recognize the importance of mothers in families, but having a strong, caring, and supportive father is just as vital to the health and happiness of a family. Although most of our clients at Family First are women, we also have an educational program for fathers called Practical Fatherhood. The lessons help men build character, confidence, and understanding the responsibilities of a father. Classes are individualized, practical, and interesting. Get more information on the classes available contact the center for appointments.Remember to bring your infants and toddlers to Story Time each Wednesday morning from 10-11 a.m. It is a fun time of play, music, refreshments, crafts, and story reading for the children. The property is owned by the Hillman family and they would like to see the building occupied. Liz Tuck from the Copper Corridor is helping with the non-profit designation for the visitors center. “There is enough land on this site to have artist’s paint, put bird baths up, and bring some of their own artwork. In January, the Honorable G. Murray Snow appointed Chief (Ret.) Robert S. Warshaw as the Monitor in the United States District Court case, Manuel de Jesus Ortega Melendres, et al., v. Joseph M. have to be in phases since we can’t afford to do everything at once,” she said. “We are working on an alliance with the Biosphere and our goal is to promote Oracle as a whole.” Oracle has a lot to offer, not just the art tour, holiday market, guest ranches, jewelry makers, and Oracle State Park; the Oracle Women’s Group hopes to package Oracle so other people can experience some of the wonderful talents and businesses the town has. There is a possibility of a zip line coming in near the C3 Ranch. There would be at least two different zip lines. Bristow presented John Predgo with an award for Volunteerism of the Year. John has helped the OWN out many times, and even though this is a woman’s group he is always willing and happy to help. Bristow hopes to continue to present a volunteer award once a year to an outstanding member that performs duties above and beyond. The group depends on volunteers to help with the new visitors center. Some of the members have been touring different areas of Oracle so they can provide future visitors with appropriate information. Some of Oracle’s main attractions are: Acadia Ranch Museum, Arizona Trail, Oracle Ridge Hiking Trail, American Flag Ranch, Liberty State Park, Oracle State Park, Peppersauce Canyon Campgrounds, and the Southern Arizona Equestrian Center just to name a few. The Oracle Women’s Network has a strong commitment to the community. They want to help beautify, inform and do what is necessary to see Oracle thrive! All of these women are driven and have what it takes to be successful! We wish them much success and happiness in the new endeavor!
