Session approved a request from the Presbyterian Women to recognize veterans on Veterans Sunday in November 2013.

Session voted to send a letter of appreciation and commendation to Sandy Poore, our Facilities Manager, on the anniversary of her thirty-second year of loyal and devoted service to First Presbyterian Church of Naples. Sandy was presented with a plaque acknowledging her years of service and was advised that the church would underwrite the cost of her next round trip air fare to Boston to visit and assist her grandchildren. The gift was presented to Sandy during the worship service on June, 16, 2013.

Session approved a gift to Brice Gerlach, Director of Music Ministries. The belated gift was in recognition of his receiving a Doctor of Music degree in 2008 and of his continued dedication, commitment, and contributions to all areas of his responsibility including the overall worship experience as well as the Season of Music. The gift was presented to Dr. Gerlach during the worship service on June 2, 2013.

The Christian Education Committee reported that our new Director of Children and Family Ministries, Andrea Plueddeman, has created a new summer program for youth in our community. This will involve opening our Youth Room two days a week throughout the summer for events and activities for middle school and high school youth. This will be continued into the fall as these programs move forward.

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS Plans are in process for members of our church to attend this exciting event! The Big Tent combines ten national conferences under one roof, gathering thousands of Presbyterian pastors, elders, and other church leaders to study, share, worship, and fellowship, and to build up the body of Christ. It’s been called “a giant Presbyterian family reunion” – and the 2013 Big Tent brings that reunion to Louisville, Kentucky, home of the PC(USA)’s national offices since 1988. Please contact Rev. Homelessness...Here?!? Last winter I responded to an invitation by some elders from Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church to attend a meeting on homelessness in Collier County. Over 30 individuals came from 19 faith communities in the county to hear about what is happening and what can be done.

I came to understand what homelessness looks like locally. We often think of a homeless person as someone at the side of the street with a sign or someone pushing a cart. However, those make up only a very small number of homeless and are considered the “chronically homeless.” The vast majority of homeless in our county can be found in shelters, motels, cars, camping, or temporarily “doubled up” in someone else’s home. Additionally, it surprised me to learn that we have over 1,050 homeless children in our schools, and they are in every school in the county!

After hearing stories about the homeless here in Collier County, we soon formed a group: Faith Communities to End Homelessness. I soon joined the executive committee. This initial year we are focusing on 1) awareness, 2) grants for rent subsidies and case management, 3) support of a drop-in center for homeless youth (ages 16-24), and 4) increased efficiency in local government procedures.

We’ve put a wrap on yet another school year and after June 14, the hallways will be much quieter…at least for a few months. We have been busy with end of year celebrations, the Fantastic Finale, Teacher Appreciation, working with

Aldo’s Ristorante Italiano & Bar, enrolling students for next year and saying goodbye to students and staff alike that will not be returning. We would like to extend our gratitude to those families that had dinner at Aldo’s to support the Preschool’s fundraiser. The funds from the fundraiser will be added to our Angel Fund. The Angel Fund provides financial assistance to families that have students enrolled in the Preschool, and also provides curriculum enrichment opportunities for all of our students. We would also like to thank Aldo’s owners, Aldo and Kelly Musico. Aldo’s presented a check for $427.10 to First Presbyterian Preschool’s Angel Fund following the fundraiser! With a new school year, we will welcome new faces both in the classroom as well as in the Preschool office. Elizabeth (Liz) Psota will be joining me as the Preschool’s Administrative Assistant. Liz brings with her experience in business and education. Liz is a long time member of First Presbyterian Church and both her children will be enrolled in our program next year. Liz also spent this last year serving as the Preschool Parent Committee Chair Person. We hope that everyone has a fantastic summer filled with fun and creativity. School begins on August 19, at which time the halls will once again be filled with joyful and excited activity and voices! Ashley Houk Preschool Director

Martin Taylor has totally lost touch with his family. He has no clue who his teenage daughter's friends are, why his son only communicates with an electronic sign outside his bedroom door, or why his youngest child only watches faith TV. Convinced the family needs to reconnect, Martin surprises the wife and kids with a little experiment-he locks them in their own home with no power, no heat, no running water, and absolutely no contact with the world outside! The sudden holiday staycation isn't what the Taylors had in mind for the weekend, but they'll have to team up to prove they can survive Dad's wacky mission. With a heartfelt message and some persistence, one little member of the family helps put their priorities back in the pews, because they'll need all the faith they have to get through this!

New Directions

We have officially begun our “New Directions” summer programming, and we are having a blast. We have seen between 40-50 teenagers (in groups of about 30) and 10-15 elementary children, and we are continuing to grow.

As a reminder for the month of July the Youth Room will be open every Tuesday and Thursday (closed July 4) from 1-4 p.m. for kids in grades 6-12.

Tuesday, July 2 we are going to the movies. We will be seeing the new Monsters Inc. movie. The cost is $20 and will include food at the theater.

Friday, July 26 Youth event: Mystery Service Project from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The carotid artery/stroke disease screening procedure is simple, painless, and non-invasive. You will be asked to lie on your back on an exam table. After applying gel to your neck, the technologist will move an instrument called a transducer on your neck to create images of the carotid arteries and assess the rate of blood flow within them.

(AAA) is a condition in which the lining of the blood vessel called the aorta is enlarged within the abdomen. Because abdominal aortic aneurysms are likely to tear if they reach 5 centimeters in diameter, monitoring is important for preventing a

rupture. A ruptured AAA can cause blood loss, shock, and death.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is more commonly known as hardening of the arteries. PAD screening is done by using the ankle-brachial index (ABI). This ABI screening is painless, quick, and non-invasive. It will identify most cases of peripheral arterial disease.

We use ultrasound to detect the risk of osteoporosis by measuring for the bone mineral density of your heel. The heel is measured because its bone is similar to that found in the hip, where fractures occur most often. Bone mineral density is a powerful predictor of skeletal strength and fracture risk, especially when considered along with other factors such as gender, age, and family history. When you receive an osteoporosis screening, you will simply place your foot in a painless ultrasound device called a bone densitometer and the bone mineral density of your heel will be measured. Atrial fibrillation also known as irregular heartbeat, is a condition that can cause a stroke. A stroke results from the disruption of adequate blood flow to the brain. Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of heart arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) and can cause a clot that travels to the brain where it results in stroke.

Women’s Luncheon

All women are invited to the Second Annual “Bring a Piece of Salad” Luncheon

to be held Wednesday, July 31, in Spencer Hall. In addition to the luncheon, we will be packing up school supplies for children

of need at Grace Place as well as filling detergent bags for The Shelter for Abused Women and Children.

We ask everyone in the congregation

to please consider buying school supplies for this project: crayons, pencils, notebooks, and loose-leaf paper, etc.

School supplies can be dropped off in Spencer Hall from July 18 to 30.

If you would like to help with the hands-on mission work, come to Spencer Hall On July 31 at 11:00 a.m.

The luncheon will then be held at Noon. Come for both the mission work and the luncheon

or just the luncheon if you prefer.

What is a “piece” of salad, you ask? Bring a container of some type of salad topping:

cheese, croutons, chopped tomatoes--you get the idea. It will be very casual-- paper plates and all.

No reports, no business, just fun and a chance to get together and to get to know each other better.

This party is for all women of the church. You don’t have to belong (or want to belong) to the PW organization.

We hope that the younger ladies in our church will join us too.

You can make reservations for the luncheon in Spencer Hall on Sunday, July 21 or July 28.

Feed the 5,000 Luke 9:10-17

During summer months, visitors are away, some seasonal jobs are gone, and the Naples area has fewer donors. But those less

fortunate still need food. During July, our efforts to help feed the hungry are focused on the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is an evangelical Christian church. Its mission is to teach and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to meet human needs in his name.

Suggested items are:

JULY MISSION ADVENTURE

On June 8, Gloria Kersch, Peg Lamont, and Rev. Evans helped Grace Place by preparing the campus for summer camp! After some initial moving of computer equipment, they settled into nice times of helpful work and good conversation.

A New Baby! Need a ride to church?

The deacons are assessing the need for providing transportation to church on Sundays for members…or anyone for that matter…who may not be comfortable driving or may not be able to drive or get a ride to church on Sunday mornings.

The goal is to make sure that anyone who wishes to worship on Sundays

is not prevented from doing so because of transportation issues.
