Rough Draft
Japans evolution in 19th century
In 19th century, drastic transformation allowed Japan to be the most modernized nation in
Asia. Before Japan modernized by the Western influences, the last traditional Japan, Tokugawa
period kept Japan isolated from outer influences. Tokugawa period was founded by Tokugawa
Ieyasu, and it meant internal peace in Japan, and prosperity under military dictatorship. The
transformation of Japan was soon triggered by Meiji Restoration, which was the political
revolution, meaning the fall of shogunate and rise of the imperial rule under emperor Meiji.
(britanica.com) Not all was satisfied with this modernization, so revolts and conflicts were
present. Japans traits and nature allowed them to modernize in short time. Japans government
structure changed from military dictatorship to imperial rules. Speed of transportation and
communication changed drastically due to development of communication technology and
transportation technology. Militaries began to develop after the long isolation, due to lack of
lands and such. Industries were improved, developed by copying the industries strategy from the
West.
Before Japan was modernized and westernized by Meiji Restoration, there was Tokugawa
period, founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu, which was the last period of traditional Japan. Tokugawa
period is also known as the Edo period. Before the Tokugawa period, Japan was not unified
During this It was known for economic prosperity and internal peace. The social class for
Tokugawa period kept citizens in place. The lowest was the merchants, then the farmers,
samurais, daimyo, the domainial lords, and then the shogunates. Samurais were the warriors, and
they had philosophies that kept peace. Samurais were hired by the wealthy upperclass samurai
lords, which were the daimyos. Daimyos hired armies of samurais for their power. The upper
classs power was controlled in order to keep the peace and power of the shogun. Ieyasu gained
power and hegemony by balancing the powers of This system was called alternate attendants,
where the families of the upper class war lords and such will stay in the capital, Tokyo, under
direct control of the shogun, and the lords were allowed to live with their families for a year, and
for next year, they were allowed to go back to their provinces.(youtube.com) The ultimate upper
class was the shogunate, which was the king. The military dictatorship of the Tokugawa era kept
the order and peace by strict rules and harsh punishments. These strict rules started from what
kind of clothing each social class were allowed to wear to which jobs the social classes were
supposed to do. It was unified Japan with improved roads that banned Western influence, such as
Christian missionaries and technology. The shoguns thought Christianity as a wicked, evil
religion, which requires worship and loyalty for Christ and Jehovah only will create less loyalty
to the shogun. The long lasting peace made the samurais useless and jobless, making merchants
be more prosperous and samurais were not allowed to have a job beneath their social class,
flipping the social classs cases. The roads were improved and unified and allowed the
messengers to travel in faster speed. The passengers except for sumo wrestlers needed a passport
to pass by. Taxes were paid by rice, which was used as currency, which made the farmers not
allowed to eat their own rice that theyve cultivated. The Tokugawa period, started in 1600 and
ended at 1868 due to Meiji Restoration.(columbia.edu)
Not everyone is happy with any kind of changes, and especially in Japan, there were
people who wasnt so satisfied, and rose in revolt. The forced ending of the isolation of Japan
and instant influence of Western civilization soon caused the conservatives and upper class of the
Tokugawa period to be unsatisfied. The Western culture was quite a shock for samurais, who had
philosophies and ideas that conflicted with Western culture. Their social classs mistreatment as
modernization goes by got worse and worse, ending up breaking out a rebellion. Few of the
examples of these would be Satsuma revolt in 1870s(aka Conscript revolt) and the reaction of
the Southern part of Japan. The Satsuma revolt was caused by unsatisfied samurais, and this
rebellion ended with complete destruction of the samurais.(britannica.com)
Japans several traits allowed them to modernize and evolve and adapt instantly. They
copied what they admired, and they followed what others did, making it easier for them to follow
the Western trend, and this allowed them to import the best ideas and concepts on subjects in
the world to become theirs. Iwakura mission was one of the examples, which was sending people
to absorb the ideas of others, and bringing back the idea for Japans own use.(youtube.com) Due
to these traits and acts, they began to modernize very quickly. The ruler changed from military
dictators, shoguns to emperor Meiji. Japan also took the constitution from Prussia, and turned it
into Imperial rescripts. Rights of people changed, from being allowed to kill whoever breaks the
rules to more generous, rightful rules.
In Tokugawa period, majority of Japanese population usually traveled on feet, but
technological development allowed them to improve the speed of transportation and
communication drastically. The Tokugawa period had created an unified, well-organized roads
with stations, but during the Meiji restoration and modernization, the roads and transportation
has improved drastically. The railroads and steamboats came in as the Western culture and
technology came in to Japan. They created canals for better, more efficient transportation.
(youtube.com) Due to improvement of transportation, the communication became more efficient,
with faster transportation speed.
Now, Japan is one of the leading countries in the world, modernizing in the shortest time.
It is considered as one of the countries with top technology, and that also modernized in very
short time, compared the the obstacle that they werent connected with other parts of the world
for a long period of time; the Tokugawa era. Even though it had groups that werent very
satisfied with this instant modernization, and had several rebellions, their government,
transportation, and communication has improved and modernized drastically. For other countries
that havent modernized yet, Japan would be an example for a fast modernization.
