The oriental food lovers can refer to "Afghan Kitchen", a beautiful Islington restaurant where only the more adventurous can enjoy the typical dishes with spices strong and spicy. The protagonist of the recipes is the chicken served with yogurt. In the small downstairs room are a couple of long tables and a glass counter laid out with large pots of the stews available each day. Upstairs are a few more refectory tables. The menu is equally straightforward and, according to legend, has not changed in the six years since it was opened by Habib Kawyani, an Afghani, who first came to Britain 20 years ago.

Menu

Lunch for two, including wine and service, £40.

Easily located on the northern edge of East London is The Hemingway, a stylish pub with a laid back atmosphere. A typical

21

Page 22: Our trip to London

A trip to London

Victorian city pub from the outside, the interior of The Hemingway is part aristocratic Scottish castle, part Boer hunting lodge, furnished in oxblood Chesterfields and decorated with mounted antlers and taxidermy aplenty . The Hemingway`s menu offers well-cooked classics with subtle touches of fun and creativity, all fairly priced, while the drinks selection is varied, including a number of very good wines and specialty spirits including, of course, plenty of great rums.

Menu

The Food

The Hemingway keeps it simple and evolves daily. A somehow still soft Scotch egg starter (£3.50) is not too heavily seasoned or spiced, which is refreshing, particularly as it comes with zingy Piccalilli. Subtle chicken liver parfait (£5.50) has a beautiful liver flavour that builds rather than aims for a pungent hit, and is served with well thought out warm rolls and fruity chutney.Pan-fried plaice (£13.50) is generous and delicious, adding a bit of interest to the menu with its mussel and dill dressing. You can also order a 35-day aged steak, which is a fair steak for £15.Dessert highlights include the pub’s biscuity crumble, and summer fruits with crème Anglais at £4.50. However the marbled chocolate cheesecake, also £4.50, may not satisfy cocoa lovers, as it has a subtle chocolate flavour rather than an intense one.

The DrinkThe wine list is trendily clipped at four reds, four whites and two rosés. This leaves a tight selection, among which a powerfully herbaceous McGuigan Chardonnay (£22 a bottle or £3.75 a glass) and a lively Matakana Estate Sauvignon Blanc with tropical melon and passion fruit tones (£19 bottle, £3.50 glass) are two highly refreshing tipples.Taking inspiration from their personal collections, the new owners have a range of special spirits blended especially for them by distilleries. Some superb rums, naturally, grace the back of the bar. They couldn’t do the name Hemingway justice without them. Sip the quality liquor over ice, or watch this space for the cocktail garden, where the venue's collective cocktail bar expertise is bound to come into its own.

Stephens Tavern

Situated right across the road from the Houses of Parliament, The St Stephen's Tavern is a traditional pub. Our Her-itage. Hall and Woodhouse is one of the few remaining re-gional family brewers, brewing our award-winning Dorset ales and offering warm hospitality at our pubs for over 230 years. Our Food. We use regional food partners, typically from fam-ily businesses like us, who provide us with quality ingredients that our team of talented chefs (not microwave technicians!) use to create fresh, unpretentious, seasonal dishes.

Our Hospitality. We employ nice people who think like us and enjoy the same things that we do; food & drink, and, per-haps more importantly take real pleasure in looking after peo-ple and making them happy.
