Our Story

Community Housing Limited (CH L) is a not for profit company delivering housing for vulnerable and low to moderate income people who are unable to secure long-term affordable housing in the private rental market.

We originated in Australia in 1993 and have since spread our operations to South Asia, South-East Asia, South America and Africa.

We focus on developing housing options for those experiencing housing difficulty and continuously improving our service delivery so our customers can enjoy stable lives, raise families, engage in employment or study, and generally have enough to be able to live comfortably.

CHL is a registered charity. It operates like any limited company, but all financial surpluses remain in the company to be reinvested in quality affordable housing and to improve services.

In 2019 our annual revenue and total asset base exceeded by $148 million and $745 million respectively. A

Our Reach

CHL has a strong national presence across Australia and is continuing to expand internationally to regions where there is extreme poverty.

We provide our services through 23 offices with five in New South Wales, six in Western Australia, seven in Victoria, three in Queensland and one in South Australia and Tasmania.

We aim to provide a local staff response to all our customers.

Overseas, CHL has seven offices; one each in Chile, India, Indonesia, Rwanda, Peru, Papua New Guinea and Timar Leste.

Our Governance

CHL has two subsidiaries in Australia - Community Housing (VIC) Ltd and Aboriginal Community Housing Ltd (ACHL) - and seven subsidiaries overseas, in Timor Leste, Chile, India, Peru, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Rwanda.

CHL and its subsidiaries are governed by a professionally diverse and experienced board of directors who set the strategic direction and oversee operations in accordance with its company constitution and other appropriate laws and regulations. Their areas of expertise include accounting, strategic planning, property development and community development.

CH L's operations are led by a team of qualified senior management supported by competent teams who collectively have extensive experience in the housing industry including both public and private sectors.

Our Registrations in Australia include:

Our Experience & Expertise

Long-Term Affordable Housing

CHL has provided secure, long-term affordable housing for over 25 years.

In Australia, we have over 11,000 properties under management across Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania.

CHL works with governments, local communities including councils, and support organisations to deliver and manage affordable housing. With high demand for these properties, we work carefully and systematically with partners to allocate housing. We believe in creating stronger communities by enabling low to middle income individuals and families to live in quality homes with security of tenure.

Services are often provided in conjunction with partnered support agencies.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing

CH L has established a strong reputation of successfully delivering housing services, infrastructure and employment programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with around 14 per cent of CHL homes being occupied by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents.

The properties are located in rural and remote locations around the country including the East and West Kimberley 0,NA) region, East and Central Gippsland (VIC), and the Mid North Coast (NSW). CH L's approach is to engage with the community first, understand their needs, forge constructive relationships and deliver appropriate services.

CH L has also established Aboriginal Community Housing Ltd to provide housing options that are better suited to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA)

Since its inception, CH L has been providing award winning innovative housing options for those living with a disability. We have over 16 per cent of people living with a disability in our homes in Australia. We design homes that match individual requirements and cater for a range of needs and, at the same time, aesthetically blend with the neighbourhood's character.

Since 1993, our diverse housing developments have created vibrant and inclusive communities that allow people to have their own space and amenity while at the same time connecting with the broader community.

We are a registered SDA provider under the Australian Federal Government's National Disability Insurance Scheme.

NRAS Property Management (NRAS)

We have extensive property management experience ensuring that our customers receive the best property management, tenancy selection and communication services.

Through our subsidiary , Australian Affordable Housing Securities, we offer effective and efficient compliance services to ensure that all reporting requirements are met on time.

CHL also has national recognition as a licensed real estate agent and is able to offer property management services to a range of institutional and individual private investors.
