Machiya™ 152 is a modern interpretation of a Japanese merchant house, a distinctive part of Japanese history. Machiya townhouses date back to the Heian period, over 800 years ago, forming the grid of Kyoto. These urban mixed use dwellings for artisans of every kind, created the original live/work space. These merchant artisan houses reflected inno-vative and specialty production within a social setting and flourishing maker lifestyle, representative of 'monozukuri,' the essence of Japanese commitment to quality, reverence for nature, craft, and sustainable arts.
The Conde House Showroom has been created in the proportions of a true Japanese Machiya, or "eel house," but with a new contemporary aesthetic. Designed by Frost Tsuji Architects, Machiya 152 is intended to reflect the demands of modern living, paired with the timeless desire for well crafted furniture. Special events, featured artisans, and global exchanges are centered around a 30 foot studio type table.

WELCOME TO CONDE HOUSE At Conde House we proudly blend traditional Japanese craftsmanship with
21st century, advanced technology, to bring you modern furniture of the
highest quality, and with contemporary, yet timeless designs.
Our furniture, made sustainably from Japanese Oak and Ash, we believe ful-
fills our mission to build pieces that will last a lifetime, at affordable prices.
Whether you are a loyal customer, or seeing our brand for the first time, you
will recognize Conde House as a company committed to quality, simplicity
and comfort.
Our new showroom welcomes everyone interested in Japanese design with a
modern aesthetic. Machiya, or ancient artisan merchant houses, were devel-
oped hundreds of years ago, to combine all aspects of life and work into one
deep space, where merchant-artisans combined their workshop with living
and selling their wares. These long narrow buildings were a cultural paradigm,
and living displays of ‘monozukuri’, built on hand crafted intention, knowledge,
and service to their customers.
No matter the size of your project, if you are a designer or shopping for your
own home, our new showroom will inspire you with solutions. We hope you
will come in and visit us.

Conde House was founded on the principle of maintaining a peaceful coexistence with nature while also staying committed to a high level of design. Being mindful of how we use natural materials is a critical part of the company’s mission, and we honor that belief by making full use of each tree taken from the forest in order to minimize waste. Our goal is to build furniture that will last for generations—sturdy, durable, and functionally beautiful, with classic lines that withstand passing trends. By producing high- quality furniture that is both sustainable and timeless, we show our respect for nature as well as the people who purchase our products. Only then do we feel we are doing our part as both stewards of the forest and of good design.

KIYOSHI SADOGAWA DESIGNER
Inspired by the beauty and shapes of nature, Sadogawa uses the inherent characteristics of his materials to inform a minimalist design. With the Wing Series, he employs curved, flowing lines and shadows to create a sculptural look and feeling of mass. There are no straight lines here, and even the triangular elements—which represent the vitality of nature—are rounded.

The deeply curved backrest of the Tosai lounge is a highly tech-nical accomplishment of bending wood and grain patterns. The sculptural quality of the hemisphere is an out-standing feature of this lounge chair design that is an iconic achievement by both designer and factory working closely together.

CONDE HOUSE IN ACTION Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum in Osaka
Stepping outside the realm of furniture to participate in large architectural projects, Conde House fabricated Japanese architect Tadao Ando’s casework design of the Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum in Osaka. The museum, built next to Shiba Ryotaro’s home, an important figure in Japanese literature was built to preserve his books along with the achievement and spirit of his work. Conde House fabricated, to Ando’s design specifications, a vast curving wall of elliptical shelves three stories high to display the 20,000 books Shiba collected over the course of his lifetime. Conde House manufactured the parts of this monumental curving wall and as-sembled them onsite. The project required extraordinary precision and further illustrates Conde House’s ability to deliver on exacting requirements given by architects and designers for custom designs and casework.

FACTORY BY A FOREST
Our factory in Asahikawa, Hokkaido is a daily reminder of nature’s precious resources. Surrounded by mountains and forests, we feel the powerful life force of its trees as we craft them into furniture using thoughtful design, fine craftsmanship, and cutting-edge technology. We see it as our job to help foster and maintain this land. Once a year, our entire factory team plant new trees to give back to the earth what we have taken. This approach, combined with our commitment to sustainability, enables Conde House to produce pieces that will last until the next forest has grown to maturity.
