Argentina... Is the second largest country in South America and has very different landscapes and climate zones: glaciars, the highest mountain in America (Aconcagua), deserts, beaches, subtropi-cal rainforests and much more.More than a third of the 32 million Argentineans live in the nation’s capital, Buenos Aires. Agriculture is one of the stron-gest contributors to the national economy and was the base of the wealth that characterized Argentina at the turn of the century. Argentine culture was shaped by its (mainly European) immigrants. The few important remaining indigenous people are the Quechua in the Northeast and the Mapuche in Patagonia.

Buenos Aires...Is also called the “Paris of the south”. It is one of the economi-cally and politically most important cities in Latin America, a cultural experimental center, a tango metropolis, the self-declared football capital of the world and a must for travelers starting their journey through Argentina. The structure of the city is as diverse as its culture. There is no real city center or central monument. Buenos Aires is an accu-mulation of small squares, intimate streets, modern high-rise buildings, tango bars, antiques shops, etc. There is a consider-able selection of excellent museums and galleries and the theater scene is unique.Nightlife in Buenos Aires is as diverse and intense as one would imagine of a city with 12 million inhabitants.

Uruguay ...Is also called the “Switzerland of South America”, a country that offers its visitors endless possibilities to enjoy nature, clean air, wonderful beaches and a very unique culture. Uruguay is one of the smallest countries on the continent and you can cross it north to south in 8 hours by bus. Uruguay – as Argentina by the way – is among the safest countries of South America for travel-ers.Uruguays are known for their hospitality and that is especially true for the people from Montevideo.

Montevideo...Uruguay’s capital is smaller, greener and more relaxed than its big neighbor across the river, Buenos Aires. 43% of the 2.9 million Uruguayans live in Montevideo. The city offers its visitors a rich choice of cultural activities, including museums, theaters, concerts, “fiestas populares” and the supposedly longest carni-val in the world. Its location on the banks of the Rio de la Plata is incredibly unique. The “rambla” walk along the river is immensely popular with locals and visitors alike. During the summer months, the beaches in and around Montevideo are worth discovering. The Uruguayans love nature and Montevideo is a green city with many parks and trees (many palm trees). Nightlife takes place mainly in the old part of town, where you will find a considerable amount of pubs, restaurants, tango shows, discos etc.

Uruguay and Argentina are located on the Rio de la Plata river delta:

Our schoolsAcademia Buenos Aires was founded in 2004 and has built up its reputation as an aca-demically excellent school with professional service ever since.

The school is under german-argentinean manage-ment and offers all amenities. 12 fully air-conditioned classrooms are completely equipped with the latest technologies and are custom-built for small-class-size teaching.

The school is located in the absolute city center on Plaza de Mayo, on the top floor of a completely refur-bished historic building with rooftop terrace. Many subways and busses stop right outside.

Academia Uruguay was founded in 2007 and is the leading Spanish school in Uruguay. It was built upon the model of its partner school in Buenos Aires.

The school is under german-uruguayan management and offers 8 fully air-conditioned and equipped class-rooms.The school is located on central Plaza Matríz/Constitución in the historic part of Montevideo. It occupies the top floor of a historic building con-structed in 1850 and also offers a rooftop terrace. The school is easily reached by public transport and is 15 minutes’ walking distance away from the closest beach.

Both schools use the same curriculum and teaching methods. That’s why our students can move from one school to the other every Monday without losing or repeating class contents!

Our schools are not only recognized by the national education authorities and school associations, but are also actively named and recommended by the latest versions of well-known travel guidebooks.

Centro preparador DELE

Both schools offer WIFI in all classrooms and several PCs for students’ use, also outside of class hours. A book and DVD movie library are free for all students during office hours. We offer free hot and cold drinks.

Our students and teachersOur students come from around the world. Our statistics show:- 30% come from USA and Canada- 15% are from the UK and Ireland- 35% from other parts of Europe- 8% from Brasil and the rest from more than 45 other countries. The average age of our students is 29 years with important deviations from this mean (17-77 years). However, what best characterizes our students is not their age but the fact that they are keen on getting to know a different culture and language and are willing to travel thousands of miles to do so.

Many of our students are also students in their lives back home. Others are employees on vacation or sabbatical, emigrants, early retirees, teachers on training programs, entrepreneurs with an internet connection, future students etc.

Our teachers are all fully trained Spanish language instructors with degrees of prestigious local universities. They generally have years of experience and are specia-lized in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

We regularly offer continuous education programs for our teachers. Many teachers also teach at local universities or are in the process of doing doctoral research. Some of them publish in specialist journals. Others are authors or recognized textbooks or literature.

All of them have interesting personalities and know their country and city better than many historians, architects or sociologists, being able to share many real-life anec-dotes.

One of the most important aspects when characterizing our teachers is their motivation for the job. They live for teaching and bring tremendous energy to the classroom.

Our coursesBoth academias offer courses of different lengths, types, levels and contents. We try to customize your course as much as possible and will make the impossible happen to give you tailor-made solutions. Our academic coordinators ensure the quality of all courses and distribute new students to existing groups according to their skill-levels. Our curriculum is compatible with the European Reference Framework for languages.

To improve our students’ communica-tion skills is the main objective of all our classes. To achieve this, teaching the structure of a language is important, but not sufficient. Indeed, it is not our aim to turn you into grammar experts incapable of communicating in real life. Listening comprehension, conversation, grammar and vocabulary are all of central importance. Even though our teachers speak many foreign languages, classes are 100% in Span-ish, even for beginners. All extracurricu-lar activities are in Spanish, too. Add to that the fact that many students stay with Spanish-speaking local families and you have a full immersion product.

1. Intensive group course

This is our standard 20 hour-per-week course which 80% of all students take. Maximum group size is 5 students. Courses on all levels start year-round, every Monday, 52 times a year. Most classes are from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm, but during the months of January, February, july and October also in the afternoons from 2 to 6 pm. Four hours per day plus some homework make for an intensive course.

2. Combined course

In case you want to add more hours to your intensive course, you can combine the latter with individual classes. You determine how many hours you wish to add.

3. One-on-one

The content of our individual classes can be determined relatively freely in coordination with the student. The class is more focused on the individual strengths and weaknesses of the particular student. One-on-one classes are also a great way to quickly refresh existing knowledge of the language.

4. Online-Spanish

Our students can start classes per skype and other online tools before travelling. However, this course is in biggest demand after the student has left our school and wants to continue studying, using the same study material and teachers. We also have students who have never travelled to Latin America and only do distance learning. This is especially interesting for advanced students and those interested in specific topics.

5. Rio de la Plata Course

All our courses can be continued in our respective partner schools Academia Buenos Aires and Academia Uruguay. Staff of both schools know each other well, communicate daily and share the same philosophy. Every Monday, using the same study materials and curricu-lum, you can continue studying on the other side of the Rio de la Plata river delta. The trip between both cities is just 3 hours by ferry. A great way to get to know two different cities and cultures.

“I have found Academia Buenos Aires to be the ideal combination of a serious language school and a fun place to spend a month of vacation. Due to my good prior knowledge of Spanish and my interest in the Argentine cultural history, I opted for a private course on Argentine literature. The teach-ers were great and really knew what they were talking about. …” (Trine Lunde, Norway)

6. DELE Exam prepa-ration

The Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (D.E.L.E.), offered by the Instituto Cervantes as a representative of the Cultural Ministry of Spain, are official diploma accrediting your knowledge of the Spanish language. Both our academias are recognized test preparation centers and will prepare you in one-on-one classes for the exam. The length of your stay and the amount of hours you need for the preparation depends on your start level and on which DELE exam level you have chosen to prepare for.

7. Spanish and Tango

Buenos Aires and Montevideo are the birthplace of tango. We recommend all our students to join a Milonga or tango-show at least once during their stay. If you are interested in tango, you can also combine your Spanish courses with individual or group tango lessons. Spanish in the mornings, tango in the early evenings. On all skill levels.

8. Volunteer work

Both academies offer you the opportunity to combine your Spanish course with parallel or subsequent volunteer work. Independently of your age, you can work on projects and with organizations in Buenos Aires or Montevideo and help people in different areas and with distinct problems. Share your time, ideas and skills and discover the local culture from a different perspective. We offer this service for free if your language course lasts for 3 or more weeks and you stay for at least 4 weeks on the project. We require at least a medium Spanish level when you start the volunteer work.

“The Academy has everything: A great location, great facilities, and a highly trained and knowledgable group of teachers and administrators. My individual teacher was able to teach the language in a theoretical /nuanced way that really suited my learning style. She was also great at diagrammatically explaining grammatical concepts…alltogether I found this to be a way of approaching language that is leaps and bounds ahead of any language instruction I have come across (back home in the EEUU). As a result, I felt myself growing more comfortable here in Buenos Aires. And decided to push my flight back so I could get more out of the experience.” (Emmet Tuxes, USA)

“I spent two weeks in Buenos Aires and another two in Montevi-deo. It was a unique experience, not only because of the academic quality, but also due to the cultural immersion. It is hard to believe how different both cities are despite their geographic prox-imity. My course was superbly organized and the teacher simply excellent.” (Ralf Schneider, Germany)

9. Medical Spanish

Both academias offer courses in medical Spanish for physicians, medi-cal students, nurses and other profes-sion in the health field, on all levels. You can combine your course with visits to different hospitals and inter-views with health professionals. We also offer the option to do internships and volunteer works in different areas of the health sector.

10. Spanish for spanish teachers

This continuous training course is offered to Spanish teachers who have received at a least a full C1 level. Courses start every first Monday of a month or upon request. We will be happy to offer you more detailed information by email.

11. University credits

All our courses include the possibility to take an exam which refers to the exact contents covered in class. If you need university credits for your courses (ECTS or US-system) this very exam allows you to obtain a transcript with contact hours, level and grade through our local university partner. There is a small cost for this service.

12. Business Spanish

The business Spanish course takes place in Buenos Aires, only. In order to participate, you need an intermedi-ate Spanish level. The objective of the course is learn specific business vocabulary, get to know the local business environment and to under-stand local business customs.

13. Group travels

Every year several groups of students from around the world come to the Rio de la Plata to take classes at our academias.

Courses can be general or subject-related, stand-alone or faculty-led and can be combined with a whole range of extracurricular and week-end activities and trips. We will be happy to make a concrete proposal for interested groups.

Extracurricular programAt least twice a week our schools offer optional extracurricular (cultural) activities, free of charge. We also offer movie showings with subsequent analyses, once a week. Once or twice a week we offer workshops with academic contents, such as phonetics, listening com-prehension and conversation. Add to that free tutoring sessions, once a week.

Our cultural program director is a teacher from our respective schools who establishes a weekly plan of activities, taking into account the current cultural events and interests of the students. The following are examples of activities offered by the school: guided visit of La Boca district in Buenos Aires followed by a visit of the Quinquela Martin museum; a tango lesson followed by a visit to a Milonga; guided tour of the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires; invitation to an asado grill evening; tour through the Barrio Sur in Montevideo and subse-quent meeting with a carnival group; visit to the typical gaucho Feria de Mataderos in Buenos Aires, etc.We consider it important that you not only read about the local culture, but actually live it! Our teachers and guides are enthusiastic and very knowledgeable representatives of their culture.

(photo on the left: La Boca. Below: Guided tour to Barracas)

“The extracurricular activities were really great. The program changed weekly and our guide always talked in a manner that was comprehensible for students of all levels. I felt this to be quite complementary to classes.” (Alex Schulze)

In class, most topics are relevant to the skill level of the students. However, in our workshops we offer “transversal” topics which concern all learners of Spanish as a foreign language, independently of their specific level. Phonetics is definitely one of these subjects and so are listening comprehension of recordings, radio, TV transmissions etc.

Our weekly tutoring is thought for students with specific questions on topics covered in class, who want these very topics explained by a different teacher and approach.

AccommodationIn case you need housing, we will be more than happy to provide you with different options for our students: host families, shared apartments, apartments, hotels and hostels. Espe-cially the first two options are quite popular and interesting alternatives for making local acquaintances. The quality of the guest families and shared apartments is of utmost impor-tance for us. You will be spending days, weeks, months in your accommodation and you should feel comfortable there.

Before starting your trip we will send you a short description with pictures of your accom-modation. This way you will get a first impres-sion of your new home.

Host families

Living with a guest family is a unique opportunity to get to know the local lifestyle: habits, foods, rhythm of life, traditional Uruguayan and Argen-tinean hospitality and much more. This way you can improve your Spanish in a daily context. Our host families are part of our program and know the way we operate. All families are prepared for the arrival of students and will help you discover the many facets of their city. It is important for us that they share the wish to receive people from around the world., share experiences and our cultures.

Shared apartments

Accomodation in shared apartments is an alternative for all age groups. Between 3 and 6 students, each with their own room, share an apartment or small house. The apartments are centrally located, fully equipped and offer wifi, linen, weekly cleaning etc.

Apartments

We will be happy to find you an apartment or studio according to your wishes.

2. You will be studying Spanish in small groups of maximum 5 students and can be sure of the aca- demic quality of the program. Our teachers not only are university graduates, but also have exten- sive teaching experience. Our study material and methodology is state-of-the-art and especially designed for intensive learning.

3. We offer permanent contact with the local culture and language through stays with guest families, extracurricular activities and “tandems” (informal meetings with locals where half of the time you speak your mother tongue and the other half in Spanish).
