GREETINGS FELLOW HONDA ENTHUSIASTS, and welcome to the latest issue of With DREAMS magazine.

It’s been a busy year for all of us here at Honda, and aside from increasing efforts to enhance the quality of the

products we’ve also undertaken a few very interesting initiatives.

Honda constantly looks into ways to reduce our environmental footprint through global and local initiatives,

and some of our efforts include the introduction of the Hybrid, a revolutionary fuel cell vehicle and the i-DTEC

engine, as well as the EMS (Environmental Management System) implemented by our assembly plant in

Malacca – which has since obtained ISO14001 certification.

Through philanthropic efforts like the Honda Dreams Fund, Honda’s responsibility as a corporate citizen to

spread the circle of joy is fulfilled as Malaysia’s youth are encouraged to discover the power of dreams… and

then translate those dreams into reality.

In the light of today’s many challenges, initiatives like these are more urgent than ever. Yet as demanding as

the future may be, Honda will continuously explore ways to enhance our efforts and improve our network of

services as we seek to deliver a total satisfying experience.

Accelerating efforts to strengthen core characteristics is what makes Honda a unique organisation, and it’s

all part of our aspiration to become a company that society wants to exist.

Tech Chall Categ

IN A CONTINUED EFFORT to improve Honda service and customer satisfaction, the third annual Honda Tech Challenge – an intense and exciting event that brought together 33 finalists to battle in their respective knowledge and skill – took place at the Honda Training Centre in Pegoh, Melaka on 18 October 2008.

This year seven lucky customers, each bringing along a guest of their choosing, attended the event and caught all the competition’s excitement for themselves. Apart from the categories of Technician/Foreman, Parts Controller and Service Advisor, there were two newly added categories: Body Repair and Paint Repair.

These two new categories were added to encourage more dealers to expand into the areas of body repair and paint work, as currently only six dealers offer these services – giving Honda customers even

Honda Malaysia wanted to show these customers the quality of the service and give them a better understanding of the processes involved when a Honda car is sent for service and repair. In this way, the Tech Challenge is not only a platform for upgrading the skills of Service Personnel; it also reaches out to Honda customers to show them first-hand the high level of competency in Honda service. At the launch of Tech Challenge 2008,

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia Mr. AtsushiFujimoto welcomed everyone, reminding the audience that the objective of TechChallenge was to strive for continuous improvement in customer satisfaction. From the moment the contest began there was a palpable energy in the air, a product of the intense excitement felt by contestants, judges, dealers and indeed everyone present at the event. Of course, no one felt the pressure more than the contestants, and the Tech Challenge has fast earned a reputationas a competition that truly tests themettle of even the most seasoned Honda dealers’ Service Personnel. With each striving to do their best under the close scrutiny of judges, peers, dealers and customers, the key for most was to overcome any nervousness and performlike true professionals. The judges assessed the quality of each contestant’s work, made sure every-one followed the contest rules and acted as timekeepers to ensure the tasks were completed within the allotted time.

Duration: One Hour

HMSB distributes question papers

containing 50 multiple-choice questions to all

Honda dealers, and service managers then

conduct in-house tests.

Stage Two – Regional Contest

Duration: One Hour

HMSB Instructors conduct regional

written tests in Northern, Southern,

Central, East Coast and East Malaysia.

Test is made up of 30 multiple-choice

questions and five subjective questions.

Ten Technicians/Foremen are selected to

move on to the final stage.

Stage Three – Workbench and Shop-Floor Final Contest

Workbench Duration: 75 Minutes

A gruelling set of workbench sessions

test the measuring skills of each

contestant’s accuracy and consistency.

Shop-Floor Duration: 75 Minutes

Contestants demonstrate their competency

diagnosing and trouble-shooting vehicle faults.

All diagnostic steps must be performed in

accordance with the official service manual.

Parts ControllerStage One – Selection

Duration: N/A

Service centres with only one parts

controller can automatically nominate that

person to move onto the next stage.

If two parts controllers are employed, selection

is left to the service manager’s sole discretion.

Stage Two – Regional Contest Duration: One Hour

HMSB Instructors conduct regional

written tests in Northern, Southern, Central,

East Coast and East Malaysia.

Test is made up of 60 multiple-choice questions.

Stage Three – System and Shop-Floor Final Contest

System Duration: 140-160 Minutes

An intricate set of system sessions test the

understanding, ability and overall skills of

each contestant’s ability to implement the

HMSB system.

Contestants demonstrate their managing

and operating the storage area according to

parts standard guidelines and spare parts

implementation activities. All diagnostic

steps must be performed in accordance

with the official service manual.

Service AdvisorStage One – Selection

Duration: One Hour HMSB distributes question papers

containing 30 multiple-choice questions and two case studies to all Honda dealers, and service managers then conduct in-house tests.

Although they are all Honda associates, they treated the contest in all seriousnessand impar tia l i ty and showed pro-fessionalism in carrying out their duties. In order to catch as much of theact ion as possible, savvy audiencemembers moved from station to station, with the Service Advisor, Body Repairand Paint Repair drawing the mostattent ion. Whenever a contestantfinished early or completed a challenge

wel l , spontaneous applause eruptedfrom the eager spectators. After the contest was over, contestants unwound by mingling with guests astea was served while the judges worked fast to select the events big winners before everyone was treated to a special gala dinner at the City Bayview hotel. As the evening drew to a close,everyone was in high spirits – and looking forward to next year’s Tech Challenge!

Personal Viewpoints: Tech Challenge 2008

Senior Manager of Service Operations Mr. Daisuke Suzuki said he was happy by the level of participation, especially as almost all the country’s dealers had attended the challenge. “Tech Challenge is an event where we can create aharmonious relationship between Honda Malaysia and our dealers. This willbenefit the Honda customer with increased levels of satisfaction,” he said.

Mr. Kumares Thiagarajoo, who has worked in the auto industry for more than10 years, judged the Technician/Foreman category. “The contestants were better prepared this year, but two contestants stood out above the rest,” he said, adding there is still room for improvement and that more effort in studying service manuals will result in higher performance.

Mr. Per Madsen, an advisor and judge for the Body Repair section, said he was honoured to be part of Tech Challenge. “I am glad that this section was added, and perhaps next year mid-welding and spot-welding can be included in the challenge as these are more challenging aspects of body repair,” he said.

Contestant Ms. Sim Lay Khim took part in the Parts Controller section for the second time and said, “Tech Challenge motivates me to do better at my job and I am happy that I qualified to take part for the second time. Besides, it’s a great way to meet my peers from other parts of Malaysia.”

Contestant Mr. Ramu Suppramaniam took part in the Technician/Foreman section and said, “I am thankful to my boss as I received a lot of support from him. I was even given a car to practice and sharpen my skills. My target is to take part in Honda’s Asia/Oceania challenge this coming December.”

En. Abdul Rahman Nordin, a staunch Honda customer for over 15 years, owned a 1986 Honda Civic before trading it in for a 2007 Honda City. “I did not realise the extent of the complexity of the work involved and am amazed. I only send my car for general service and I am glad I now understand the process better. It makes me proud to be a Honda owner,” he said.

Mr. Leong Chee How is an IT manager and first-time Honda owner who bought a Honda Civic just over a year ago. Viewing the Tech Challenge as an excellent way for Honda to get closer to their customers, he said, “I am more than happy to recommend Honda cars to my friends. The service is good.”

Mr. Edvin Teo, an account manager for an IT company, bought the Honda Civic Type-R three months ago and was pleased with the level of service he received at the service centre. “It would be nice to have a section on car waxing/polishingfor the challenge next year. I believe that there are some customers who would find it useful,” he said.

Service Transaction model while

incorporating necessary interpersonal skills.

Contestants are also to inform the "customers"

of any additional services and seek their

approval prior to service commencement by

giving them an estimation of additional costs

and time incurred.

JCB Duration: 80 Minutes

JCB is a system used to schedule and

assign jobs to the appropriate technicians,

maximising productivity while minimising

time spent.

Focuses solely on the job assignment and

time-management skills of the contestants.

To ensure success at this stage, proper plotting

of control checkers and skilfully managed job

allocation is vital.

Mr. Muhammad Zai Yaazi bin Ibrahim of Delima Kinta Sdn Bhd said he was very happy to win the Service Advisor category, confiding he felt he had an advantage over the others. “I think I was better on the Job Assigning Board, where the jobs are distributed. And the last time I participated in the Parts Controller, the experience did help

increase my knowledge as a Service Advisor. I did see some improvements on a daily basis, for example when it comes to quoting the customers.” Summing up his feelings on the results Mr. Muhammad Zai Yaazi said, “Firstly, I would like to congratulatethe winners. And secondly, for those who didn't win: work harder.”

Ms. Loh Poh Yee of Sri Utama Auto Sdn Bhd, who took the top spot in the Parts Controller category, remained extremely humble during the victory celebration. “I’m very happy, and I think I was really lucky to win the competition. Last year was my first experience and I was a second runner-up, but I will most likely not be participating in the next Tech Challenge since I would like to give a chance to others to participate,” she said. Loh described the Tech Challenge as a learning experience, “It helped me realise the areas where I was weak. For example, the last competition made me realise I was weak with inventory control and so I improved on it.”

Mr. Kua Choon Aun of Sri Utama BP Sdn Bhd, was number one in the Paint Technician category, and said “I was very excited and scared when I learned I was a winner. Doing it the way that we were taught was definitely better, and I believed everything would be fine as long as I practiced what I was taught.” A Tech Challenge first-timer, Choon Aun was very glad to have won and accredited success to comprehensive Honda training. “We were trained by Japanese instructors how to carry out our jobs in a more systematic and efficient manner. Practice what you have learnt and you will get better at it,” he said.

Mr. Sam Chai Huat of Yong Ming Motor Sdn Bhd, who earned top marks in the Body Technician category, was very happy and honoured by the victory. Chai Huat said success was hard-won and “during the training in HMSB I took the initiative and managed to learn a great deal about body repair from the instructors.” Though this is only the first year Body Repair was included in the Tech Challenge, Chai Huat is already looking forward to next year’s competition, saying participation “will have to depend on my performance in the first rounds but I'll definitely be trying my best. I learned of the importance of following the procedures and its benefits: Pay attention to details and learn from mistakes.”

This wasn’t Mr. Ramu’s first experience at Tech Challenge – he won the same category in 2003 – and even after this year’s results he said he’s looking

forward to competing again in 2009, “but definitely I prefer to give the chance to my fellow colleagues. I believe my working experience of 14 years helped a lot, and I have been practicing based on the manual from the first day I came in.”

Q1. What are your thoughts about the Honda Malaysia Tech Challenge you observed this morning?

I have been in charge of Honda operations for a few countries in Asia and have attended such technical competitions before. The highlights of the competition vary with each country. For the Tech Challenge in Malaysia, I felt it was a well organised and am strongly impressed by what I saw.

Q2. For other Honda organisations overseas, are customers invited to attend such events?

To the best of my knowledge, it isn’t common practice of Honda organisa-tions overseas to invite customers to such events. When I heard that Honda Malaysia was doing it for the first time, I must admit that I was a little surprised. However, it was a refreshing idea and should be adopted worldwide.

Q3. What is the secret behind Honda’s success?

Unlike other carmakers, Honda gets closer to the customer by looking at things through the eyes of the customer. This is a motto that has stayed unchanged since we began and we try our best to keep to it faithfully on a daily basis.

Q5. Is there a plan to launch new initiatives to increase customer satisfaction?

Instead of embarking on new initiatives, I think a more effective method of increasing customer satisfaction is to inculcate Honda service personnel with the mindset of always putting yourself in the position of the customer. Even with the launch of new technologies and innovations, I bel ieve that it is st i l l high service standards and professionalism that earns greater customer satisfaction. Q6. Currently with the ongoing global recession, what do you think Honda needs to improve to retain market share?

As the economy in the United States continues to slow down, it is inevitable that other countries will be affected as well. I believe that high-quality service is the key to success in this economic climate. Honda has a long history of customers who have purchased Honda cars, parts and service. This is our advantage and as long as we have this advantage, all efforts need to go into continuously improving the service we provide.

CATCHING UP WITH 72-YEAR-OLD M R . Y EO H O O N KO K abou t h i s younger days as a Honda sales agent and seeing his vintage collection ofphotographs felt very much like travelling back in time. A sales agent for both Honda motor-cycles and cars for a greater part of his life since 1952, Mr. Yeoh was one of the early pioneers that helped grow the Honda brand in Malaysia into what it is today.

Mr. Yeoh’s fascination with motor-cycles and cars began at a tender age when he was l iv ing in a shophouse above his uncle’s motorcycle dealership, Ban Hoe Seng Sdn Bhd in Ipoh, Perak.

“Before cars were introduced inMalaysia, my uncle was in the business of selling British bikes like the Francis Barnett. I used to spend much of my time after school toying with bikes andby the age of 17, already knew how toperform simple motorcycle repairs. I then progressed to sales bookings and was even in charge of parts and marketing as well – practically a one-man show.

“One day while on the road, a motor-cycle next to me caught my eye. Ridden by a National Cash Register salesman,it was my first time seeing a bike thathad a rear telescopic fork, signal and anelectric starter. When the rider rode off, I was determined to catch up with him and find out the brand of the bike – it was a Honda. I even managed to persuade the rider to stop by my uncle’s showroom so that I could show my uncle this beautiful bike,” said Mr. Yeoh.

As Ban Hoe Seng Sdn Bhd already had a good reputation and history ofselling motorcycles, it wasn’t long before Mr. Yeoh managed to secure distribution rights for Honda motorcycles in Perak

from the Mr. Honda of Malaysia, the late Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew – Malaysia’s first distributor of Honda motorcycles. Unfor tunately, the sales of Honda bikes took longer to take of f thanMr. Yeoh had anticipated.

“Although a hit back in Japan, Honda was st i l l re lat ive ly unknown in th ispart of the world at that time and so I had difficultly selling the motorcycles, even though they were better designed and pr iced lower than the ir Br i t ishcounterparts.

“It was also a challenge to sell the fi r s t Honda ca rs tha t a r r i ved onMalaysian shores – the S600 sports car( in 1966 ) and N360 min i -compactcar ( in 1967). Although equipped withinnovative 4-cylinder water-cooled and2-cylinder air-cooled engines, consumershere during that time remained appre-hensive of Japanese-made vehicles,” he said. Undaunted by initial sluggish sales, Mr. Yeoh refused to call it quits, and instead started calling his friends.

“I have a loyal group of friends who have supported me since I began selling British motorcycles. Their bikes then were turning obsolete and so offered them a high trade-in value for their existing bikes in exchange for trying the new Honda motorcycles. In some cases,

I even sold these bikes at a loss but it paid off as everyone loved the bikes and its popularity grew. I did the same when I was selling Honda cars. “To promote the Honda brand further, me and my friends would even ride our Hondas all around Ipoh as a form of advertising,” he said. Dur ing the launch of the first-generation Honda Civic compact car in 1972, Honda’s popularity in Malaysia started to pick up speed. And by the time the more spacious Honda Accord was unveiled in 1976, news of the brand’s quality and reliability had already spread far and wide. His ability to speak fluent Japanese allowed Mr. Yeoh to help Honda design cars and bikes that were better suited for the needs of the Malaysian market, adding to the brand’s acclaim. Owners of Honda motorcycles and automobiles would feedback what they thought of their vehicles, and Mr. Yeoh in turn would offer suggestions to the Honda executives that visited him regularly from Japan on how to further improve the vehicles. The highpoint of Mr. Yeoh’s career came when he was invited by the late Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew to attend Honda’s First Asian Distributors Conference in Japan in May 1963. Organised to

“I have a loyal group of friends who have supported me since I began selling British motorcycles. Their bikes then were turning obsolete and so offered them a high trade-in value for their existing bikes in exchange for trying the new Honda motorcycles. In some cases,

I even sold these bikes at a loss but it paid off as everyone loved the bikes and its popularity grew. I did the same when I was selling Honda cars. “To promote the Honda brand further, me and my friends would even ride our Hondas all around Ipoh as a form of advertising,” he said. Dur ing the launch of the first-generation Honda Civic compact car in 1972, Honda’s popularity in Malaysia started to pick up speed. And by the time the more spacious Honda Accord was unveiled in 1976, news of the brand’s quality and reliability had already spread far and wide. His ability to speak fluent Japanese allowed Mr. Yeoh to help Honda design cars and bikes that were better suited for the needs of the Malaysian market, adding to the brand’s acclaim. Owners of Honda motorcycles and automobiles would feedback what they thought of their vehicles, and Mr. Yeoh in turn would offer suggestions to the Honda executives that visited him regularly from Japan on how to further improve the vehicles. The highpoint of Mr. Yeoh’s career came when he was invited by the late Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew to attend Honda’s First Asian Distributors Conference in Japan in May 1963. Organised to

It may come as a surprise but back in the 50s, Honda vehicles weren’t as common on the roads as they are today. With Dreams spoke with one of Malaysia’s pioneer Honda users, Mr. Yeoh Oon Kok, to find out more about the brand’s humble beginnings in the country.

Honda has been a major part of my life, and I am proud to share my long experience and involvement, both at a professional and personal level. As a Honda sales agent for about 2 decades, I have been involved in the sale of hundreds of vehicles; and on a more personal note, the happy owner of countless Honda vehicles over the last 40 years. My professional relationship with Honda began in the late 1950s, when I joined the Honda sales team in Ipoh, Perak. As a sales agent for Honda, I sold Honda vehicles to a broad cross-section of society across the different races and different backgrounds. With a fantastic product, selling was easy!! I still remember my first sale was a Honda Cub C50 motorcycle from the motorcycle division and my first sale of a Honda car was a Honda N360 and S600 model. Yeah, I can’t believe that was about half a century ago but I can still remember this clearly! Throughout the years, I have also cultivated many genuine friendships from all walks of life during my Honda endeavour. The highlight of my career was being part of a delegation (led by Datuk Loh Boon Siew then) to attend the 1st Asian Honda Conference in Japan in May 1963, which included a comprehensive Honda factory tour in Japan and meeting various Honda leaders in Japan and the region. I indeed felt very privileged, and even today, have vivid recollections of this amazing experience. My most memorable moment of course, was meeting Mr. Soichiro Honda, the founder and President of Honda Japan during this tour. We were given a warm welcome and encouragement for being the Honda pioneers of the day. We really felt honourable and proud being part of the Honda family. Every now and then, I will still spend hours looking at my photo album which I have compiled from my Honda days decades ago to mesmerize this nostalgic moment. I have owned numerous Honda vehicles over the last 40 years, which some of them included the Honda Life, Honda Civic First and Second Generation and various models of Honda Accord etc. All have served me faithfully and I am still the proud owner of a Honda Accord today. Not forgetting of course, my fondest memory of my Honda is my marriage car convoy consisting of 8 Honda Civic First Generation to pick up my bride in 1976. Honda has indeed helped shaped me for who I am and what I have today. Honda has realised much of my dreams. Thank you Honda for being part of my colourful life!

I was very impressed with him. He was an intelligent and very hardworking man. Even though he was the boss,he adopted a hands-on approach by visiting all departments frequentlyand ensuring that everything ran smoothly. He was not the kind of boss that sat in the office all day and instructed managers what to do. I had to visit him monthly at his office along Pitt Street in Penang to order spare parts and report our monthly sales figures. He would always advise me to increase the size of my sales team to boost sales. I brought this news back to my uncle who would tell me that we couldn’t afford the extra headcount because of the low sales revenue. And so I was often caught in the middle.

Can you remember the total numberof Honda motorcycles and cars you’ve tested? And how would you describe the experience of riding or driving a Honda?

I can’t remember the exact numberbut I’ve definitely tried a lot of Honda bikes and cars. I had to, as I was in charge of promoting and selling them. Although my uncle was the owner of the showroom, I had to make a purchase just like a regular customer, albeit at cost price. IN A PERFECTLY SAFE WORLD, cars would be made out of something a lot softer than steel. They wouldn’t go very fast. All sharp and potentially harmful surfaces would be removed. And in the regrettable event of an acc ident, no dr iver, occupant or pedestrian would ever get hurt.

Obviously, all that is impossible. Although there is a soft-shell concept

car (the innovative Honda PUYO) that truly pushes the envelope in the safe car category, people will still sometimes need to get where they’re going in a hurry. And unfor tunately, as with anything else in life, there’s always a risk anytime someone gets behind the wheel.

So just how can driving be made safer? Answering that one very important

question has resulted in two distinct areas of research and development: Active and Passive safety systems.

Active safety features are technologies designed to help prevent accidents from happening. These include the 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), and Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Electronic Stability Control.

But perhaps one of the most effective Passive safety features ever to be introduced is the airbag.

Consistently a leader in all areas of car safety, Honda began research on airbags way back in 1971. After 16 years of fundamental groundwork, in 1987 Honda became the first manufacturer to introduce driver-side SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags in a car produced in Japan. Not content to stop with a safer driver, passenger-side SRS airbags were added in 1990.

Less than a decade after that, in 1998, Honda introduced the world’s first two-stage airbag deployment system in an intelligent side airbag that added even more safety with the inclusion of an occupant position detection system. That was then augmented in 2002 with Honda’s development of side-curtain airbag systems.

It’s a lot of development in the space of 29 years, and there’s no doubt that innovative Honda thinking has contributed to the well-being of countless motorists who’ve benefited from Honda’s airbag technology.

But the passion of Honda continues to drive the company even further in the pursuit of your safety and peace of mind.

That’s why Honda developed the

world’s first intel l igent dr iver-side airbag. It’s called intelligent because the i-SRS airbag system continuously stages the volume of airbag-inflating gas to combine enhanced occupant protection with reduced occupant impact.

S lated for re lease in Japan in November 2008 (on the driver side of the Life Minicar) the new i-SRS airbag system features a sp i ra l-shaped seam structure and gas-release control valve for faster deployment, reduced occupant impact and a longer period of inflation.

By continuously staging the gas volume, airbag impact on the occupant is greatly reduced. As a result, motorists enjoy enhanced protection, and the

new system accommodates a broad range of occupant posi t ions and potential collision situations.

Developed exclusively by Honda, the spiral structure of the i-SRS airbag allows the protective surface to be formed at a lower overall airbag volume, providing cushioning airbag protection faster than ever before. That’s great news, because in an accident every microsecond counts.

Whi le maximum airbag volume remains 60 litres (about the same as conventional systems) the new i-SRS a i rbag can have a vo lume of as l i t t le as 30 l i tres - and sti l l remain entirely effective. This contributes to a minimum-volume deployment time decrease, down to just 0.015 seconds.

Honda has already applied for more than 20 patents covering the various technologies employed in the new i-SRS airbag system, and is already working on a passenger-side system using the very same technology.

And although the i-SRS airbag will at first only be available in the Japan-only Life compact passenger car, it won’t be long before this amazing technology will be part and parcel of a Honda near you!

Developed exclusively by Honda, the spiral structure of the i-SRS airbag allows the protective surface to be formed at a lower overall airbag volume, providing cushioning airbag protection faster than ever before. That’s great news, because in an accident every microsecond counts.

Whi le maximum airbag volume remains 60 litres (about the same as conventional systems) the new i-SRS a i rbag can have a vo lume of as l i t t le as 30 l i tres - and sti l l remain entirely effective. This contributes to a minimum-volume deployment time decrease, down to just 0.015 seconds.

Honda has already applied for more than 20 patents covering the various technologies employed in the new i-SRS airbag system, and is already working on a passenger-side system using the very same technology.

And although the i-SRS airbag will at first only be available in the Japan-only Life compact passenger car, it won’t be long before this amazing technology will be part and parcel of a Honda near you!

Formula OneThe year 2008 will be remembered as one of significant change

for Honda F1 Racing.

Beginning with the unveiling of the team’s brand-new racing

machine on 29 January 2008 – the RA108, a race car designed

differently from its predecessors both in terms of aerodynamic

layout and exploitation – Honda then went on to present former

Ferrari Technical Director Ross Brawn as its new team principal.

This year also saw the Honda F1 Racing Team launch its new

earthdreams initiative. A successor to the 2006 award-winning

myearthdream concept, which continues Honda’s support of

inspiring projects that create a positive impact on the world.

Unfortunately, with the current economic climate taking a

turn for the worse and severely dampening worldwide demand

for automobiles, Honda was forced to withdraw from all

Formula One activities commencing 5 December 2008 –

making this season its last year of participation.

“This difficult decision has been made in light of the quickly

deteriorating operating environment facing the global auto

industry, brought on by the sub-prime problem in the United

States, the deepening credit crisis and the sudden contraction

of world economies.

“We will enter into consultation with the associates of Honda

Racing F1 Team and its engine supplier, Honda Racing

Development, regarding the future of the two companies.

This will include offering the team for sale,” said President

and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Takeo Fukui.

During the course of its F1 run, Honda achieved a Grand

Prix victory in 2006 and enjoyed strong support from fans

across the world, making the team’s decision to pull the

plug on its F1 dream all the more difficult.

“By making the best of what we have learned during

these times of economic turmoil, coupled with the spirit of

challenge gained through active participation in racing,

we intend to continue with our commitment in meeting

new challenges,” said Fukui.

It is no doubt that 2008 was one of the most challenging seasons in Honda racing history, but Honda is no stranger to challenges.

Continuing to build upon the experience it has acquired both on and off the track this year, Honda continues the pursuit of its dreams

in 2009 – to challenge stronger and push boundaries further.

The new RA108 is superior to its predecessors both in aerodynamic layout and exploitation.

Looking Ahead

The Takata DOME NSX of the DOME Racing Team is one of five Honda teams that participate in the Super GT.

MME 2008 saw the fielding of the first all-local Honda Malaysia Racing Team – from the drivers to members that built the race cars.

Super GTFormerly known as the All-Japan Grand Touring Car (JGTC)

championship, the Super GT series is known among racing

enthusiasts to be not just a battle of speed, but also a battle

of minds.

This grand touring race features two categories of race

cars, GT500 and GT300, with each vehicle fitted with an

intake restrictor to cap output performance. Both groups

then compete alongside one another with points awarded

separately for each category.

In 2007, Honda emerged victorious for the GT500 category

during round four of the competition held at the Sepang

International Circuit and was gunning for a repeat this year

on 22 June.

Although the team was unsuccessful in retaining its

championship title during the 2008 race, enhancements

have been made to the team’s NSX race cars to help Honda

rediscover its winning ways – for example, the introduction of

a subframe to increase stability and a new air-intake system to

reduce overall vehicle weight. Come 2009, you can definitely

count on Honda to do much more.

“In addition to pushing the speed of the NSX, we’ll also

look at ways to improve our race strategies, footwork timing

and use of tyres,” said Honda Chief Engineer Hiroshi Shirai.

Merdeka Millennium EnduranceDuring this year’s Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME)

competition – held from 28 August to 30 August 2008 at

the Sepang International Circuit – the Honda Malaysia

Racing Team (HMRT) made history when it fielded its first

ever all-Malaysian team.

Empowering the HMRT to achieve its 2008 objective,

which was Towards Realisation of Local Competency,

all members were local – from the 40 responsible for building

both race cars, to the six drivers responsible for driving

these vehicles.

“MME 2008 is an important milestone for the HMRT.

We are very proud to note that this year, we are finally a

fully Malaysian team. Ever since the HMRT participated in

MME in 2003, we have never looked back. With each

passing year, the team continues to improve step by step

while allowing local talents to thrive.

“After five years of participation and gradual independence,

the HMRT stands proud of the Malaysia Boleh spirit in all

its members! I commend each and every HMRT member,

past and present, for their exemplary teamwork and sharing of

knowledge. Indeed, it is their spirit to overcome all obstacles that

has brought the HMRT to where it is today,” said Managing

Director and Chief Executive Officer for Honda Malaysia and

Team Principal Atsushi Fujimoto.

Another initiative achieved by Honda Malaysia during

this year’s MME campaign was the fielding of two identical

Mugen-tuned 2.0 i-VTEC race cars. For the first time, Car 26 and

Car 27 shared the same engine, gearbox, suspension, brake

system and tyres – all the way down to matching race livery.

The Honda Accord, Jazz and Civic Type R garnered top honours in their categories at the Autocar ASEAN Car of the Year Awards 2008, held at The Saujana Kuala Lumpur hotel.

In the Compact Sedan/Hatchback/Coupe class, the recently launched premium 5-door Honda Jazz hatchback emerged tops beating the Toyota Vios, Proton Persona, Proton Gen2 CPS, Suzuki SX4, Suzuki Swift Sport, Kia Spectra 5, Chevrolet Aveo, Nissan Latio, Volkswagen Polo GTI and Hyundai Coupe.

And for the Performance group, the highly anticipated Civic Type R drove away with the prize, outperforming the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and BMW M3.

Finalists for the Autocar ASEAN Car of the Year Awards 2008 were chosen from new automobiles launched from June 2007 to end August 2008, and judged according to style, utility, safety, features, quality of build, brand image, handling, performance and value for money.

A Roaring Success for First Honda Clubs Mega Gathering

Organised by Honda enthusiasts Temple of VTEC Asia, the inauguralHonda Clubs Mega Gather ing on 8 Nov 2008, held at the Ipoh OldTownre s t a u r a n t o n P r i m a Av e n u e i nCybe rJaya , saw more t han 250par t ic ipants f rom five Honda fangroups take part in the first ever majorget-together of Honda fanatics.

Attended by the Honda Car Owners Club (HCOC), Jazz/Fit Friends Club (myJFFC), teamCity, 8th Gen Civ ic O w n e r s C l u b a n d n e w l y f o r m e d Odyssey Owners Group, the event fostered friendship and cooperation among Honda enthusiasts, with the hope of eventually forming a united community of Honda fans to promote goodwill and social responsibility. Priorto this gathering, though Honda fan groups had contact with one another, events were often held separately.

Honda Malaysia was also invited to partake in the gathering to strengthent ies between Honda fans and thecompany. Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Atsushi Fuj imoto and associates graced the event with their presence.

The Honda Accord, Jazz and Civic Type R garnered top honours in their categories at the Autocar ASEAN Car of the Year Awards 2008, held at The Saujana Kuala Lumpur hotel.

Mr. Fujimoto mentioned that Honda Malaysia continues to strive to provide high-quality products, sales and after sales service to meet and fulfil the ever changing needs of Honda customers in the country.

Dominating the Large Sedan category to bag this year’s award was the 8th generation Honda Accord, launched April 2008, which edged out the Mazda 6 and Kia Optima.

In the Compact Sedan/Hatchback/Coupe class, the recently launched premium 5-door Honda Jazz hatchback emerged tops beating the Toyota Vios, Proton Persona, Proton Gen2 CPS, Suzuki SX4, Suzuki Swift Sport, Kia Spectra 5, Chevrolet Aveo, Nissan Latio, Volkswagen Polo GTI and Hyundai Coupe.

And for the Performance group, the highly anticipated Civic Type R drove away with the prize, outperforming the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and BMW M3.

Finalists for the Autocar ASEAN Car of the Year Awards 2008 were chosen from new automobiles launched from June 2007 to end August 2008, and judged according to style, utility, safety, features, quality of build, brand image, handling, performance and value for money.

A Roaring Success for First Honda Clubs Mega Gathering

Organised by Honda enthusiasts Temple of VTEC Asia, the inauguralHonda Clubs Mega Gather ing on 8 Nov 2008, held at the Ipoh OldTownre s t a u r a n t o n P r i m a Av e n u e i nCybe rJaya , saw more t han 250par t ic ipants f rom five Honda fangroups take part in the first ever majorget-together of Honda fanatics.

Attended by the Honda Car Owners Club (HCOC), Jazz/Fit Friends Club (myJFFC), teamCity, 8th Gen Civ ic O w n e r s C l u b a n d n e w l y f o r m e d Odyssey Owners Group, the event fostered friendship and cooperation among Honda enthusiasts, with the hope of eventually forming a united community of Honda fans to promote goodwill and social responsibility. Priorto this gathering, though Honda fan groups had contact with one another, events were often held separately.

Honda Malaysia was also invited to partake in the gathering to strengthent ies between Honda fans and thecompany. Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Atsushi Fuj imoto and associates graced the event with their presence.

Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd became the first foreign car manufacturer to support the government’s move for safer roads, cars and drivers in Malaysia when it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya (JKJR) on 25 Aug 2008 in Kuala Lumpur.

The MOU affirms Honda Malaysia’s support towards the Malaysia Ministry of Transport’s Rear Seat Belt campaign,

expected to come into effect on 1 Jan 2009, as well as mutual cooperation in raising road safety awareness.

“Promoting road safety has always been a commitment of Honda. And here in Malaysia, we seek to partner with the government in its efforts to promote road safety. Thus, we are very pleased to enter into this MOU with JKJR, becoming the first foreign car manufacturer in Malaysia to do so,” said Honda Malaysia Managing

Mr. Fujimoto added that up till 2007, approximately 19 per cent (or 25,480 cars) of the 132,764 Honda automobiles sold by Honda Malaysia in the country do not feature rear centre seat belts.

Consisting mostly of Honda City cars sold from 2003 to 2005, Honda Malaysia has begun offering free installation of rear centre seat belts to these automobiles in batches since Oct 2008, with al l costs borne by the company. Honda City owners who have yet to have theircomplimentary rear centre seat belts fitted can be assured that the company will notify them of further details accordingly.

In addition to this service, Mr. Fujimoto highlighted Honda Malaysia’s expansion of its Safety Driving Course this year to include more than 400 Honda customers and potential customers – helping to raise even greater awareness of the importance of safe driving.

“On behalf of the JKJR, I am pleased to find a partner (Honda Malaysia) who shares the same vision and dream of zero road accidents in the country,” said JKJR Director General Datuk Suret Singh.
