TERCER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA REFLECCION
LOS ESCRUTINIOS
“Vengan a ver a un hombre que me ha dicho todo lo que hice” (Juan 4:29).
Los catecúmenos, los que se preparan para ser bautizados y entrar en la Iglesia, recibirán hoy y en los dos domingos siguientes las oraciones antiguas llamadas “los escrutinios”. En estas oraciones, pedimos al Señor escudriñar y purifi car los corazones de los catecúmenos. Tal como acompañamos a los catecúmenos en hacer las promesas bautismales el domingo de la Pascua, así debemos acompañarles en los escrutinios. Hoy rezamos que Jesucristo nos escudriñe los corazones y haga en nosotros lo que hizo para la samaritana. Jesús penetró el pecado, el odio a sí mismo y el auto engaño que vienen de cinco maridos (Cfr. Jn 4:18). La mujer se sentía como si Jesús le hubiera dicho todo lo que había hecho (Jn 4:29). Era como si volviera a revivir su vida entera en unos instantes durante su conversación con Jesús. El Señor está dispuesto a escudriñarnos y purifi carnos de una manera semejante. Después de que Jesús haya quitado varios años de basura de nuestros corazones, el amor de Dios será “derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo, que nos ha sido dado” (Rom 5:5). Después de vaciar de nuestros corazones el pecado y sus efectos, el Señor llena nuestros corazones con amor. Entonces, hablaremos de la abundancia de nuestros corazones (Lc 6:45). Como la samaritana, seremos testigos de Jesús, y mucha gente de nuestros pueblos creerán en Jesús, ateniendo a nuestras palabras de testimonio (Jn 4:39). Así, los escrutinios tienen como resultado el amor y una nueva evangelización.

THE SCRUTINIES
“Come and see Someone Who told me everything I ever did!” —John 4:29
The catechumens, those preparing to be baptized and enter the Church, will receive today and on the next two Sundays the ancient prayers called “the scrutinies.” In these prayers, we ask the Lord to scrutinize and purify the hearts of the catechumens. As we accompany the
catechumens in making the baptismal promises on Easter Sunday, so we should accompany them in the scrutinies.
Today we pray for Jesus to scrutinize our hearts and do in us what He did for the Samaritan woman. Jesus penetrated fi ve husbands’ worth of sin, self-hatred, and self-deception (see Jn 4:18). The woman felt as if Jesus had told her everything she had ever done (Jn 4:29). It was as if her whole life had fl ashed before her during her conversation with Jesus. The Lord is willing to scrutinize and purify us in a similar way. After Jesus has removed years of garbage from our hearts, the love of God will be “poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us” (Rm 5:5). After emptying our hearts of sin and its eff ects, the Lord fi lls our hearts with love. Then, we will speak out of the abundance of our hearts (Lk 6:45). Like the Samaritan woman, we will be witnesses for Jesus, and many people from our towns will believe in Jesus on the strength of our words of testimony (Jn 4:39). Thus, the scrutinies result in love and a new evangelization.
