Our Father In Heaven

In a sense all are the offspring of God:

Acts 17:28-3128 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ' For we are also His offspring. ' 29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising. 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead…

Our Father In Heaven

In a sense all are the offspring of God:

Luke 3.3838 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

But it is clear early on that Jesus is speaking of something different from this “general” idea of God as our Father:

John 8:41b-42Then they said to Him, " We were not born of fornication; we have one Father — God."42 Jesus said to them, " If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.

Our Father In Heaven

A. Jesus often began prayer with “Father”

Luke 22.42 saying, " Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.“

Luke 23. 34 Then Jesus said, " Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.

46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, " Father, ' into Your hands I commit My spirit. '" Having said this, He breathed His last.

B. Jesus gave His immediate disciples this right

Matthew 5.16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5.43-48 " You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. ' 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. …48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. “

B. Jesus gave His immediate disciples this right

Matthew 6.1 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 6.9 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.”

C. Jesus gives all God’s children that right. 1. Those born again are children (John 1:12,13; 3:5).

John 1:12-13 “12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

John 3.5 Jesus answered, " Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

2. Those baptized are children (cf. Gal. 3:26, 27)

3. Those who keep commandments children1 John 3.10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

D. Many who call God, “Father” have no right

John 8:42-4442 Jesus said to them, " If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it
