3. Vaccines contain all or part of a harmful substance that is then introduced to our bodies in the form of an injection

– This stimulates the body to produce immunity to the disease without actually catching the disease

– Scientists are currently working on vaccines for AIDS, some cancers (cervical), and malariaQuickTime™ and a

• Researchers have successfully engineered bananas, potatoes, lettuce, carrots and tobacco to produce vaccines, but they say bananas are the ideal production and delivery vehicle.

4. Gene Therapy shows promise for treating genetic disorders

-It is currently a short term solution but scientists hope that

it will soon be a permanent solution

-Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs

-By introducing healthy DNA into the lung cells,

the mucus will temporarily be made at a normal rate

5. Synthetic DNA (XNA) DNA code is created on a

computer that has several different species genomes loaded onto it

Then a scientist takes this code and builds a strand of DNA

This XNA will replicate, make proteins and even evolve on it’s own just like natural DNA

The Supreme Court has decided that XNA may be patented but natural DNA cannot

Genetically Modified foods also known as Frankenfoods– The first GM food produced was a

tomato– It had a mold inhibiting gene

added to it to enhance flavor and shelf life

– Scientists thought that this might be a good way to introduce more vitamins & minerals to diets of third world countries

• But other countries didn’t trust the GM foods

• Most European countries have banned the import of GM foods

• Even starving countries won’t accept food aid from the US if it contains GM products

• None of these products are labeled as containing GM grains & this has upset some groups in America

Page 8: Other animals that have been cloned

• These groups insist that not enough testing has been done & that the American people are being used as guinea pigs

• In fact, America’s teens are the guinea pigs....you have been eating GM foods your entire life!
