An historically important, Grade II listed 4-5

bedroom house forming part of the former home of

Queen Victoria's youngest daughter.

This delightful attached period property adjoins the

Osborne House Estate. Osborne Cottage, which we

understand was originally the home of Queen Victoria's

daughter Princess Beatrice, herself the mother of

Queen Ena of Spain.

This is an opportunity to acquire a rare piece of the

Island's heritage intrinsically linked with Queen

Victoria and Osborne.

Osborne Cottage was built in around 1856 and has

been sub-divided into a number of private residences.

This particular property contains several of the

principal rooms of the original house with many

elaborate original architectural and decorative features;

it stands in its own private garden.

The property is part-way through a refurbishment

project and offers a rare opportunity to complete the

detailed restoration to create a unique family home.

The property has attractive red and yellow chequer-

work brick elevations under an ornate clay tile roof.

Cast iron rainwater goods include hoppers dated 1856.

Original windows, many of which have been recently

refurbished and have unusual original, concealed rising

sash shutters. Others have folding shutters. Casement

windows have cast iron lights in a lozenge and

diamond pattern. The surprisingly spacious

accommodation has many original character features

including the stunning galleried landing with vaulted

roof and circular sky lantern.

The current owners have progressed the restoration

project whilst retaining the valuable and historic

features. The impressive reception rooms have many

exquisite period features and are quite magnificent,

emphasising the heritage of the building.

HRH PRINCESS BEATRICE

Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) was the fifth daughter

and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince

Albert. Victoria consented to her marriage to Prince

Henry of Battenberg on condition that Henry lived

permanently with Beatrice and the Queen at Osborne.

They were married at Saint Mildred's Church,

Whippingham in 1885 from where the couple departed

for their honeymoon at Quarr Abbey House. Princess

Beatrice was appointed Governor of the Isle of Wight

in 1896by Queen Victoria after the death of her

husband Prince Henry in the Ashanti Wars 1896.

After the Queen's death at Osborne in 1901 Princess

Beatrice moved into Osborne Cottage, on the edge of

the estate. In 1913, when Carisbrooke Castle, home of

the Governor of the Isle of Wight, became vacant,

Princess Beatrice took up her right to residence and

sold Osborne Cottage.

In August 1945 Princess Beatrice's coffin was carried

by motor torpedo boat through the fleet at Portsmouth

and Spithead. The coffin arrived at East Cowes for a

very private service at Whippingham church. Only her

son Alexander and his wife were present, and she was

interred beside her beloved Henry.

The Isle of Wight, situated off the South Coast of England, is becoming

an ever-more popular location for permanent and second homes. Made

popular by Queen Victoria, who had her maritime residence at Osborne,

the Island is famous for sailing in the Solent; for Cowes Week; for its

beautiful coastline including sandy beaches and The Needles;

spectacular countryside and long sunshine hours. Waitrose, M&S, Tesco

and Asda all have a presence as have many other national chains.

Communication and transport links are excellent; regular car ferries

connect with the national motorway network and fast catamarans have

connections via Southampton and Portsmouth with direct trains to

London Waterloo which can be reached within 2 hours of leaving the

Island shore. Government-funded schools are numerous and

independent schools (Ryde School and Priory School) thrive on the

Island with some children attending prep and public schools on the

mainland. Leisure opportunities abound - walking, riding, paragliding,

hang-gliding, team sports, sailing, wind surfing and other water sports,

rugby, football, cricket and golf clubs. Good transport links enable day

trips to the shopping centres of West Quay, Southampton and Gunwharf

Quays, Portsmouth.

East Cowes is a coastal town on the north side of the Island and has an

excellent range of facilities and amenities including doctors, primary

schools, marina, 9-hole golf course, shops (including Waitrose) and of

course Osborne House, the former marine residence of Queen Victoria.

There is easy access to the regular car and passenger ferry services

direct to Southampton (55 minutes) and a floating bridge ferry linking to

the famous yachting town of Cowes. Both Cowes and East Cowes have

extensive marina facilities. Bus services are available into the Island's

capital town of Newport (about 5 miles) and the coastal resort of Ryde

(about 7 miles). There is extensive redevelopment taking place in the

harbour area.
