We have a concert coming! The first concert of the thirtieth season for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia calls for celebrating the stiff winds of the times (fund- raising issues, high gas prices, convincing audiences that a live performance of music is always better than a recording). Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture will turn your face red from exposure, get you a bit sea-sick from the undulating strings, and maybe frighten you from timpani strikes to warn ships away from danger. Include thoughts of times gone by, people that are no longer with us, missed, but not forgotten. We are honored to have Mr. Luis Haza join the CSG for the opening concert. Mr. Haza serves as conductor for the Coastal Symphony Youth Orchestra and has spent over 34 years as violinist with the National Symphony Orchestra. He will perform the three movements for violin and orchestra by John Williams, from the Universal movie, Schindler’s List. The first movement is the theme from the movie, plaintive, quiet, haunting. The second remembers the Krakow Ghetto in the winter of 1941--cold, uncertain, trying to hang on to lives that have changed. The third movement is entitled “Remembrances”--a hymn to those who died. To change the mood before we take an intermission, Mr. Haza will perform a Tango with the CSG. The music was arranged by John Williams and originally was played by Itzhak Perlman. To close this first concert, I wanted something big, perhaps monumental, to celebrate a wonderful, difficult, successful 30 years of great music on The Golden Isles. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony seemed appropriate. It starts with the “fate” motif, very simple, small, but packed with power. It grows from those four notes to become one of the greatest musical works ever written. The Coastal Symphony of Georgia started on a small budget with a few people and has grown to become an excellent ensemble. We need an audience to celebrate with us. Please join us at Glynn Academy at 8:00 p.m. on October 15, 2012. I look forward to seeing you there. COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 2 OCTOBER 2012

Congratulations are in order; October begins our 30th season of live orchestral music in the Golden Isles! As we look back to 1982, it is appropriate to say “thank you” to all our early members and supporters who had the vision for what could be done and the tenacity to make it happen. We owe you a great deal.

It is also appropriate to look forward because we must remain committed to continual improvement and sustainability to continue to enjoy live classical performances while nurturing our future audience through the Youth Orchestra program. Please consider joining us with both your talent and your resources in one of the many areas of service to the symphony and its affiliates: Our signature fund-raising events include the “Golden Elephant” and the “Cabaret” and, more broadly, the Symphony Society, which supports all the symphony programs. The Youth Symphony instructs and provides venues for our talented young musicians. The Symphony Chorus lends local and professional voices for choral music. There are a multitude of tasks and skill sets required for each performance. Working as a team, we can continue to provide live performances of many of the world’s most memorable pieces. Please contact me if you want to join us and lend a hand. If you are already a supporter, think of other ways that you might be more involved. Alice Barlow, President, The Coastal Symphony of Georgia

As we celebrate The Coastal Symphony of Georgia’s 30th season, the following is a summary to remind you of its history.

1982 two public high school teachers formed a small group to give high school students an opportunity to perform with experienced string and wind musicians in an orchestral setting. This became the Brunswick Community Orchestra (BCO). Local musicians Willie Hammett (trumpet), Mickey Wendell (trombone) and John Hendry (oboe) were part of this founding group with Willie and Mickey still playing with the orchestra. 1985 – BCO incorporated and was granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS. 1994 – BCO renamed The Coastal Symphony of Georgia (CSG). 2000 – The Symphony Chorus formed with Rhonda Hambright as Director. 2004 – Vernon Humbert named Music Director/ Conductor. 2005 – The Coastal Youth Symphony formed as an affiliate of the CSG. 2006 – The Symphony Society formed as an affiliate volunteer/fundraising auxiliary for the CSG.

Dedicate Music There is no more memorable way to honor a loved one or friend, commemorate a special occasion or offer a memorial than to dedicate a musical selection from this year’s Concert Series. Selections of musical arrangements for dedication are in the Concert Season brochure and may be included in your Ticket Order Form. For example, you may select and dedicate Beethoven's Fifth Symphony or Bizet's Carmen. Please note that a single arrangement may have multiple dedications. Your dedication will be noted in the concert program. Call 912-634-2006 for further details.

The usually slower paced summer months have been extremely busy for the members of the Symphony Society, the fundraising auxiliary for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia and its affiliate, the Coastal Youth Symphony. Since 2006, The Society has contributed over $750,000 to the Symphonies through our two major fundraisers, Cabaret and The Golden Elephant Flea Market. Both exciting events are currently in the making!

Youth Symphony

The Coastal Youth Symphony 2012-2113 season has begun in a burst of excitement. Auditions were conducted earlier this month and rehearsals are now in full swing. 55 young musicians, ages 8 – 18 are practicing weekly to get ready for their December 9th concert. This is their eighth season and the third under the baton of Maestro Luis Haza. The group continues their momentum after a very successful Summer Music Camp in July at the College of Coastal Georgia. 79 young musicians attended the whole program, most of them in residence., more than the 56 last year. Besides the Golden Isles, students came from NC, OH and the Atlanta area. We are extremely grateful to all the donors who made this experience possible. The College was a superlative host and their Conference Staff contributed immensely to the camp’s overwhelming success.

The programs this year included an expansion of the Leadership Circle. 23 students attended two days of team building activity including the Ropes Course at Epworth by the Sea. This program was highly valuable in ensuring the smooth operations of the camp

and adding valuable leadership development experience for the future. The Primary Strings Feeder Program doubled in numbers from last year - many children were turned down. Crystal Murphy and Kathleen Turner advanced

25 young 3rd to 8th graders to playing the Canon in D, specially adapted for them by a friend of the CYS. A book “Five Principles for a Successful Life” written by Newt Gingrich and Jackie Cushman, his daughter, featuring Maestro Haza as one of 58 leaders, was given to every student. A “2012 Artists’ Showcase” donor appreciation event for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia, its affiliates and the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation, featuring the faculty and 13 select CYS students, was held to continuing rave reviews. Next year we would like to hire more instructors to allow every student a daily one-hour private lesson to help them move to a higher level and take full advantage of Maestro Haza’s expertise. They will also need this through the school year.

CYS is very fortunate to have Lucy Thomas as its new General Manager. Lucy brings a lifetime of community service. Maestro Haza says “she has already provided much initiative, leadership, and expertise. I look forward to making our new season an exciting one with her dynamic efforts."

Please mark your calendars for our first concert on Sunday, December 9th at 3:00 p.m. at Glynn Academy auditorium. I guarantee you will find it to be enjoyable and exciting and I look forward to seeing you there. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at [email protected]. Thank you again for your dedication and generosity to the development and growth of our young musicians. They magnify your investment. Barbara Sullivan, President, Coastal Youth Symphony

A variety of programs filled the CYS Ensemble calendar this summer. The group played for the Hospital Awards program at the King and Prince Resort, church services at the St. Simons Presbyterian Church and St. Williams, plus a funeral and several weddings. Soon they will perform for the Brunswick Kiwanis Club and the NAACP Awards Banquet on Jekyll. Beverly Fetter, the Director, says “Playing in the Ensemble provides real world business experience for the students. They have to utilize good communication skills especially in working with a bride’s parents, such as to suggest which songs would be appropriate, the best timing and location for the group, appropriate fee to charge and which clothes to wear. Weddings can be tricky as they have to deal not only with differing personalities but also the environment which might have wind, gnats, heat and darkness. I am very proud of each person in the Ensemble. They have played to rave reviews and conducted themselves professionally”.

Jacob Haymans, who plays trumpet in the CYS, was se lected in a r igorous competition to attend the Georgia Governor’s Honor program, a residential four-week summer program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. Jacob, was the first recipient in 23 years from Brunswick High in any

fine arts category. He had to write an extensive application on his abilities and accomplishments beginning at school, then county, then region levels. He auditioned at the state level, was interviewed, took a music theory and sight-reading test. More than 2900 students from across the state auditioned. 690 finalists were chosen. Jacob performed in six concerts in a brass quintet, brass ensemble and full orchestra, having to learn different music for each performance. He attended several music classes including music theory and conducting. He also minored in Executive Management. He says the program gave him hands-on experience into college life. Jacob was also selected this year for the 3rd time for the All-State Band. He is on the BHS Executive Board for Student Council, has a 4.1 GPA and was recently chosen for the Chamber of Commerce Junior Leadership Board. We are very proud of Jacob’s accomplishment. Jacob is an excellent musician and a very pleasant, capable young man with outstanding potential. Because the Veterans organization no longer sponsors the playing of “Taps” at funerals, Jacob is offering his expertise in doing so. He also is available for weddings, church services and social events. [email protected]
