Welcome Parents!

It’s nice to meet you. Goals for Open House:

To provide opportunity for you to meet the teacher

To explain expectations of your child. To share information about how parents

can support their child’s learning. All in 15 minutes!

A Little About Myself

SLU: B.A. in Sped (K-12) and General Education (1-8).

Almost 24 years at Little Oak Middle My husband and I enjoy camping in

Alabama with our grandson, Brian. I like to drink iced tea (mostly

unsweetened with a little sweet). Lighten Up, 10 week program at

Cross Gates, starts Sept. 7

Curriculum Goals

We’ll follow the Guaranteed Curriculum set forth by our parish leaders.

St. Tammany has always been a leading large school district in our state.

We’ll be ready for any standardized test in Spring 2015.

Ask your child each day,” Did you ask a good question today?” Encourage higher level thinking skills and good questions. It takes practice.

Curriculum Goals

Math: We are starting with Rates and Ratios.

Students should be able to find equivalent ratios and unit rates.

Students will work at stations in social learning groups.

Students will be expected to talk about Math with peers using subject specific terminology. Look around the room for examples of extending discussions.

Curriculum Goals

Science: We are starting with Science as Inquiry. Students will work at stations in social

learning groups while recording data. Students will soon explore the scientific

process with M&Ms. Rubrics, anchor charts, and cooperative role cards will be utilized.

In addition, we’ll address physical science concepts and the environment.

Curriculum Goals

Social Studies: Using a 4 page document, students should be

able to reference text and compose an essay. This requires practice throughout the year.

We begin with prehistory and make our way to the year 1599.

We address pertinent facts for major religions including founder or important figure, architect, symbols, and beliefs.

Homework Policy

Expect about 20-60 minutes of homework each night. We will soon be starting Study Island Math and I need your support.

I never expect a child to work over an hour on homework.

Use the flash cards on your way to ball practice or lessons.

Learn the multiplication facts and divisibility rules.

Science tests are harder this year. Know the vocabulary definitions well.

Grading Policy

Like constructed response items on iLEAP, I do try to give credit for partial responses.

So, don’t leave an answer blank. Go for the partial credit. Show your work through key words, diagrams, charts, etc…

Answer ALL PARTS of a question. Science tests are harder this year. Know the

vocabulary definitions well. Cheating is prohibited and it will be

addressed with parents.

School Policy

A LOCKDOWN dictates that a child cannot leave the room under ANY circumstance.

During a Lockdown drill, expect to hear loud banging, handles turning, and yelling.

Students are expected to remain silent and hunched in a particular corner with the teacher. Do not approach or open the door. Remain absolutely silent and watch your teacher.

Our door should be locked at ALL times.

School Policy

A FIRE ALARM indicates that students should quickly go to the door and exit immediately.

Take a left at the railing and walk through the pea gravel to the back fence. Quickly, line up in designated area and listen for your name to be called. Students should be quiet and wait for further directions.

The door should be closed and locked.

Technology Policy

Take care of the computers. Clean the keyboard daily.

Keep food and drink away from computers. Do not throw objects near the computers. Computers are to be used for academic

purposes only. Encourage your child to learn to learn

keyboarding techniques at home. There are many free tutorials available online.

Develop presentations at home. Go beyond what is taught at school. Provide citations.

Class Rules

The rules are posted above the Promethean Board and referred to often.

My expectations include: Be respectful and responsible. Follow directions. Be organized. Be prepared. Be kind.

Class Policy Absences

An “absence buddy” will collect papers and place them in a red folder marked “While you were out…”

It is your responsibility to retrieve these papers and complete in a timely manner. If you were out for two days, you have

two days to complete the work. IMPORTANT: Excuses should be sent to

the Office. I do not keep them.

Bathroom Policy

Sign the daily log and note the following: First and Last name Destination Accurate time out Accurate time of return This log may be reviewed by an

administrator.

Collecting Box Tops!!

Each Box Top clip is worth ten cents for our school. Use the collection sheets. Check the expiration dates. Let everyone know you are collecting

Box Tops because our class wants special recognition for every 1,000 collected.

Conference Policy

Try to schedule an appointment during our planning periods. We do our leg work first, ensuring that

our short meeting time is productive. Hard copies of reports and

documentation is appreciated. In most cases, Ms. Ryan and I prefer to

meet together. Let’s remain positive and believe in

fresh starts!

School Policies

Serious academic problems will be addressed through parent contact. Let me know if you do not communicate through email. Check JPAMS often. We will initiate the SAT process if academic interventions are deemed necessary.

Behavior problems: Most behavior issues can be worked out quickly by saying, ”Yes, Ma’am, I made a mistake.” It’s important to take ownership of your behavior, accept the consequence, and move on.

Class Policies: Addressing HW

For students who consistently say that NO homework was issued, I highly recommend our afterschool childcare program for a nominal fee. One hour of homework is completed each day with assistance from our staff, as needed. I will work with the staff to ensure that proper materials are carried out of the classroom and utilized.

Check the Teacher Web page often for updates on assignments, practice tests, etc…

Field Trips

Last year, we enjoyed a day at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Our students demonstrated mature behaviors within the exhibits and initiated interesting conversations later.

It is not a certainty, at this time, that we will be returning.

Get Involved!

I provide extra credit in both Math and Science for active participation in Science Club.

We’ll collaborate with Mrs. DuCre’s classes on some activities and projects.

In time, you will be asked to construct a catapult at home given limited instructions.

Again, let the classroom INSPIRE YOU to create your own lessons! Write a play, design a model, make up a song, etc…

Questions?

Take questions from parents. Ask parents to write a letter about

their child. Have them describe areas in which they

would like to see their child improve. Have them describe their child's

personality, interests, and talents.
