    Before the Competition

The 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will be a catalyst for Qatar and the entire Middle East region. Arab youth, who are already inspiring the whole world as they plot a better future for their region, will be further inspired by a new dream to play in the first ever FIFA World Cup to be held in the Middle East. Opportunities for regional collaboration and mutual investment are already being created, with a focus on long-term positive impacts for Qatar and the Middle East. Our social responsibility initiatives will continue to touch the lives of numerous people. And we will begin the process of bringing people together from across the globe to celebrate footballs transformative power.

    During the Competition

Our FIFA World Cup will enable the players to create the greatest sporting spectacle the world has ever seen. It will give fans the experience of a lifetime and provide the ideal introduction to the Middle East for traveling fans. It will offer the media more opportunities for better stories, with better facilities. The 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar experience can be summed up with a single word AMAZING!

    After the Competition

The legacy of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will last for generations. The quality of football in the Middle East will improve dramatically, drawing new fans to the game in the process. Stadiums with modular elements will be deconstructed and donated to developing countries. Technologies developed to cool stadiums and fan zones will revolutionize football in hot climates. Beyond football, and in alignment with FIFAs objectives, a higher goal will be achieved - the global unity that only football can achieve.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will also leave a lasting impact on major non-sports industries in Qatar, including real estate, tourism and media, and will serve to enhance the overall brand image of Qatar globally. With the appropriate mechanisms in place, the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will be leveraged to propel these industries and others to the highest international standards. They will contribute to diversifying Qatars economy and strengthening the private sector, playing a key role in achieving a model of sustainable development that includes the responsible expansion of both service and manufacturing industries, the development of specialized fields and the creation of an environment for entrepreneurship and innovation.

In the following pages you will find a sampling of the amazing stadiums we have proposed for 2022!

  • Lusail Iconic Stadium

    6

  • Lusail Iconic StadiumBrand new 86,250 capacity football stadium located in Al-Daayen

Will host the Opening and Final matches

Its design is inherently flexible: the stadium can be enclosed to create the perfect environmental climate for ultimate sports performance in summer and can then be transformed into an open, naturally-ventilated stadium that is equally ideal during the more temperate months of the traditional football season

Reflecting Qatari culture, heritage and scientific advancement in its form and climatic response, the building was conceived as a model of energy efficiency and a benchmark for other sports venues across the region

The stadium has been designed as a cost-effective structure by using a simple, yet innovative, construction methodology that will allow the stadium to adapt itself for a wide range of public events after Qatar 2022

The Lusail Iconic Stadium will be a landmark structure for theMiddle East, enhancing both Qatar and the regions reputationfor hosting world-class sports, cultural and social events anddemonstrating a new approach to sustainable design

The architectural concept design of the stadium references thetraditional dhow sail in cross-section and is sculpted bythe wind and climate

The saddle-formed roof will be the worlds largest cable-net roofand features a retractable or demountable central section allowing the pitch to be open to the sky

The building has a near circular footprint and sits on the primary axis, dividing its site into two symmetrical halves

The stadium is surrounded by water, and spectators passacross a moat to enter, while an outer pedestrian concourse extends outwards to the spa, hotel, accommodation, leisureand entertainment venues at the sites perimeter

The surface of the arena, accessible via one of four pitch passage tunnels in each corner, can be interchanged to suit a range of events

    Key characteristics:

The stadium creates and maintains the optimum environment for peak sporting performance

Encourages participation - the curved profile is intended to be welcoming, while openings between the sections allow glimpses inside

Adaptability - the stadium can be open or closed to allow play in adverse conditions and the roof incorporates a demountable centre section

A breathing stadium - the design makes use of natural ventilation as far as possible

Communal spirit - fostered by the curved terraces, the placement of stands at each end is designed to give supporters of each team a sense of togetherness

A year-round venue - the fixed roof section covers the seating bowl and arena, providing shade in the summer and allowing internal climatic control

Technical innovation and state-of-the-art engineering - the stadium will have the worlds largest tensile cable-net roof, incorporating computer controlled vents

Sustainable - designed to achieve the highest possible LEED rating and offer a model for similar development

Iconic - simple, instantly recognisable form will compliment the 2022 FIFA World Cup branding

The stadiums envelope can be opened completely to capture natural ventilation, or partially enclosed to enable a hybrid ventilation strategy

Four sets of openings have been provided and the building is oriented so that wind from the NNW through NNE directions is harnessed for flow both in and out of the stadium

A projected 60 percent saving on annual water consumption potentially could be achieved by reducing the use of drinking water for irrigation, integrating a grey water recycling system, utilising low flush devices and controls, specifying water efficient fittings, and recovering condensation and rainwater whenever possible

    7

  • The shading of the pitch has been arranged so that matches can beplayed during the day, while maintaining an energy efficient levelof cooling and providing adequate photo-synthetic active radiation(PAR) levels to enable a natural turf to be grown

The combination of the roof shape and its materials provides a peak PAR level in the middle of the day, with reduced solar levels into the stadiumin the afternoon and early evening reduce the energy required tomaintain comfort for the athletes and spectators

An initial pre-assessment of the scheme has been completed to helpguide the scheme towards gaining the prestigious environmental approbation of a LEED Silver award. The current anticipatedachievement is to reach the even rarer Gold rating

The design of Lusail Iconic Stadium reduces the demand on energy, takes advantage of passive strategies, and harnesses energy where prudent

The stadium has been configured to operate in three different modes. These reflect the different periods of the year and the need to shieldevents from ambient conditions, such as sand, wind, high temperatures and humidity.

    1. Natural ventilation mode - for use during cooler periods, evening events or when an outdoor venue is required

    2. Sheltered mode - for use during more difficult weather conditions, such as those during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. Mechanical systems would be used to reach comfort levels. These can be deployed to other facilities after the tournament is over

    3. Hybrid mode - for use during conditions when spectators would be comfortable but the temperature conditions are slightly too hot for the players. A low energy mode creates ambient conditions that ensure athletes/ players of an environment in which they can excel

The stadium has two side stands each comprised of three tiers

The Red Coast Metro Line will link the stadium to the rest of the nation

The metro stop is located less than 1,000 meters and fans will be ableto walk under a roof structure cooled in an eco-friendly way or use ashuttle bus to reach the stadium

  • A World-First

    Qatar Cooling echnology202216

  • The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee and teams of international climate control experts have developed environmentally-friendly outdoor cooling technologies and strategies to be deployed at stadiums, training sites, fan zones and other areas where fans, team delegations, match officials, media representatives and the FIFA family will congregate.

Target comfort parameters were identified with specific reference to local climatic conditions and FIFA requirements for players. Passive and active comfort strategies were devised for the different venue types. After the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, our pioneering architectural and climate-engineering strategies will undoubtedly serve as valuable models for other countries.

The cooling strategy for Qatar 2022 ensures outdoor comfort for players, fans, match officials and media representatives. The innovative, solar-powered cooling systems will ensure that the tournaments carbon footprint is low and the comfort level high.

The strategy has three main elements:

Focus on low-energy concepts to create thermal comfort. Apply innovative, efficient and green cooling technologies. Produce electrical energy with integrated photovoltaic systems.

Solar Cooling Concept forQatar 2022 Stadiums

Our stadiums are designed to provide outstanding comfort for both players and spectators alike. All stadiums are aligned and configured to maximise shading during games, guaranteeing that both pitches and spectator stands are not exposed to high solar radiation. In addition, the stadiums roof shapes and designs are optimized to keep the pitches and spectator stands shaded while the roof itself remains open.

The stadium envelopes are optimised to protect against wind and infiltration of humid ambient air to ensure that active soft conditioning provides real comfort. The stadiums will be soft conditioned and dehumidified so that the cooler air will create a comfort pool for the spectators and players. Ground cooling integrated into the pitch will increase the radiant cooling effect.

The soft conditioning and cooling load will be offset by a special cooling system that makes use of solar energy. The solar energy will be harvested by a photovoltaic system integrated into the stadiums roofs. The system is currently designed to a 100% solar fraction, so that all electrical energy for cooling will be offset. As the electricity harvested will be used instead of the fossil fuel required to fire a conventional power plant, the proposed solar cooling system is fuel-free.

    18

  • Use of modular construction components

The 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will require stadiums that seat between 40,000 and 80,000 spectators. Our innovative stadium concept was developed to exceed FIFAs stadium requirements while remaining consistent with Qatars existing and future sports infrastructure needs, ensuring sustainability and creating a legacy that will provide a concrete benefit for other countries. The essence of the strategy is the use of modular components in the design of most of our stadiums.

New stadiums will be built in host cities in which they satisfy expected future needs as expressed in Qatars overall development plans. Furthermore, a large proportion of the new stadiums will be designed so that part of the necessary capacity will be created by the use of modular components that can be disassembled after the tournament. Each modular stadiums capacity can be downscaled significantly after Qatar 2022, guaranteeing that no white elephants are created. This carefully calibrated mix of permanent and variable-structured stadiums ensures Qatars ability to create an optimal atmosphere for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar while maintaining the flexibility to sustain Qatars sports infrastructure over the long term.

The modular legacy - 22 stadiums for 22 new locations

After the tournament, Qatar will have a broad infrastructure of ultra-modern football facilities in keeping with its long-term development needs. Thanks to foresight in employing modular designs for several stadiums, the stadiums will be downscaled to sustainable sizes for Qatars growing population, with the modular elements used to build new 5,000-15,000 seat stadiums in developing countries. The rebuilding of these modular components in 22 different locations will make a strong contribution to the long-term development of football globally and in the local societies where the stadiums are built. In this way the modular components of stadiums used at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will make a unique and lasting contribution to footballs worldwide growth.

After Qatar 2022, the available modular components could be used to build:

two stadiums for 15,000 spectators eight stadiums for 10,000 spectators 12 stadiums for 5,000 spectators

Given the flexible nature of the modular components, the example given of three different sizes for the 22 stadiums is only one of many possible size combinations that can be created. All of the modular components could be loaded in standard freight containers and shipped to their destinations. In the case of a stadium with 15,000 seats, 134 containers would be needed for the entire structure, complete with roof and facade cladding; a stadium with 10,000 seats would fit in 88 containers; and a 5,000-seat stadium in 45 containers. All of the locations for these stadiums will be selected in partnershipwith FIFA.

    Shipping Stadiums

All modular components used for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will fit into 1600 ISO-40 sea freight containers, taking up only part of the capacity of a large container ship.

  • System Explained he ModularRe-using the stands and seats

Education City and Al-Wakrah Stadiums offer prime examples of how stadiums can be converted after the tournament into stadiums with 15,000 seat capacities. The upper tiers of the stadiums can be transformed into new 15000-seat stadiums. The remaining modular components would then be used to help create smaller stadiums, ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 seats.

New modular stadiums for 22 locations

After Qatar 2022, the partly modular Al-Wakrah Stadium can be downscaled. The upper tier, consisting of modular components, can be removed and used to build a new 15,000-seat stadium. The overall range of modular elements comprises a pool of building blocks that can be used to create new stadiums of differing sizes, custom-made to the requirements of the particular 22 locations. After disassembly, all available components from the Qatar 2022 stadiums can be utilized to build new stadiums. Qatar 2022 will thus combine two worthy goals: legacy and football development.Total 170,000 seats
