NoisesBy Danielle Caryl

The click of the clock, the creak of the stair,The squeak of a mouse and the swoosh of the air.The groan of the house as it settles below,And outside the window, the patter of snow. The scruff of the dog’s paws below where I rest,The rattle of the window that seems to face West. The jingle of bells from a wind chime next doorThe unearthly sounds of a truly loud snore. The crunching of snow under an animal’s feet,The honk of a horn from right down the street. So many noises I just want to weep,Is it too much to ask for some sleep?

Hyperbole  Hyperbole is a figure of speech in which

exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect. It may be confused with a simile because it often compares two items. The difference is that with a hyperbole the comparison is an exaggeration.

Page 11: Onomatopoeia, Hyperbole, & Repetition

Examples

• I could sleep for a year.

• This box weighs a ton.

• His eyes were as round as saucers.

• I nearly died laughing.

• I'm so hungry; I could eat a horse.

• I've told you a million times not to exaggerate.

If Only -- Highlight similes in blue, metaphors in red, alliterations in green, hyperboles in yellow & repetitions in pink.

The old man’s been stealin’She’s holding her grievance for a hundred-odd yearsWe all keep believin’That history repeats itself year after year

All I fear's that the future is worseWe have to give in to the hundred-year curseSweat in the sun like we’re digging a graveDig deep enough and our fortune we'll save

(chorus)If only, if onlyThe woodpecker sighsThe bark on the trees was as soft as the skiesAs the wolf waits below hungry and lonelyHe cries to the mo-oo-nIf only, if only

Chasing the skyA beautiful wifeYou'll make mistakes And it’s my back that breaksAnd forever my past steals my lifeTo submission I’m beatBut there’s hope beneath these feet

Blisters and bloodAnd the sun makes you blindDon’t let it eatTill it can’t help but be kindCause you know what’s importantWith your back to the wallYou can break metal chainsAnd you’re friends don’t let you fall

(chorus)

I’m a soulBut I find myself lentThat is no useWhen I’m finding my history, finding my historyI am no plane, I’m more like a featherThat is no useWhen I’m finding my history, finding my historyI am no plane, I’m more like a featherBut I can’t fly away without finding myself

(chorus)

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hallAnd the bells in the steeple tooAnd up in the nursery an absurd little birdIs popping out to say "cuckoo"Cuckoo, cuckoo

Regretfully they tell us Cuckoo, cuckoo But firmly they compel us Cuckoo, cuckoo To say goodbye . . . Cuckoo!. . . to you

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good nightI hate to go and leave this pretty sight

Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu

So long, farewell, au revoir, auf wiedersehenI'd like to stay and taste my first champagneSo long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbyeI leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye -- Goodbye!I'm glad to go, I cannot tell a lieI flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I flyThe sun has gone to bed and so must I

The Trolley Song -- Highlight similes blue metaphors red repetitions pink alliterations green hyperboles yellow onomatopoeia purpleWith my high starched collar and my high topped shoes and my hair piled high upon my head,I went to lose a jolly hour on the trolley and lost my heart instead. With his light brown derby and his bright green tie,He was quite the handsomest of men,I started to yen, so I counted to ten, then I counted to ten again.

"Clang, clang, clang," went the trolley,"Ding, ding, ding," went the bell."Zing, zing, zing," went my heart-strings,For the moment I saw him I fell."Chug, chug, chug," went the motor,"Bump, bump, bump," went the brake,

"Thump, thump, thump," went my heart strings,When he smiled, I could feel the car shake. He tipped his hat, and took a seatHe said he hoped he hadn't stepped upon my feet,He asked my name, I held my breath,I couldn't speak because he scared me half to death.

"Buzz, buzz, buzz," went the buzzer,"Plop, plop, plop," went the wheels,"Stop, stop, stop," went my heart strings,As he started to go, then I started to know how it feelsWhen the universe reels.

The day was bright, the air was sweet. The smell of honeysuckle charmed you off your feet. You tried to sing, but couldn't squeak. In fact you loved him so you couldn't even speak.

"Buzz, buzz, buzz," went the buzzer,"Plop, plop, plop," went the wheels,"Stop, stop, stop," went my heart strings,As he started to leave I took hold of his sleeve with my handAnd as if it were plannedHe stayed on with me and it was grand,Just to stand with his hand holding mine,To the end of the line.

“Inseparable” by Jonas Brothers -- Highlight personification brown & in hyperboles yellow .

Take my hand tonightWe can run so farWe can change the world to anything you wantWe can talk for hours just staring at the starsThey shine down to show us

That you know when the sun forgets to shineI'll be there to hold you through the nightAnd we'll be running so fast we can fly tonightAnd even when we're miles and miles apart You're still holding all of my heartI promise it will never be darkI know..we're inseparable

We could run forever if you wantAnd I would not get tiredBecause I'd be with youI can tell you're listening until the very endWe have done all these things

You know when the sun forgets to shineI'll be there to hold you through the nightWe'll be runnin' so fast we can fly tonightAnd even when we're miles and miles apartYou'll still be holdin' all of my heartI promise it will never be darkI know..we're inseparable

I would give it up To never let you fallCause you know we're inseparableI would give it allJust to show you I'm in loveYea you know we're inseparable

You know when the sun forgets to shineI'll be there to hold you through the nightWe'll be runnin' so fast we can fly tonightAnd even when we're miles and miles apartYou'll still be holdin' all of my heartI promise it will never be darkI know..we're inseparable
