What is the Cost of Each Course?

Each course offered through Online College Courses in the High Schools is offered at a reduced cost of $366 per course. Registration is on a first come, first served basis so be sure to register early for best class selections.

What is the Online College Courses in the High Schools Program?

The Marshall University Online College Courses in the High Schools Program offers qualified high school students the opportunity to take Marshall University courses online - 100% via the Internet - for college credit while they are still enrolled in high school.

The Marshall University Online College Courses in the High Schools Program gives high school students the opportunity to learn from Marshall University faculty and to earn college credit. Our goal is to offer Marshall University courses with a method of online delivery that will expand student access to our programs, courses, and services and that will provide them with a high quality educational experience.

Our online courses use Blackboard, a popular web-based course management system. The courses offered at MUOnline are developed by Marshall University instructors. These courses reflect the same scope and depth of material and earn the same college credit offered in traditional classes.

Who is Eligible to Participate?

The Online College Courses in the High Schools Program offered through Marshall University is open to qualified high school students. Please refer to page 5 of this booklet for qualifications for admission.

The Program is also offered to qualified students, not yet high school juniors, who have received permission from their parents, principal, and guidance counselors.

Earn college credit online While still in high school!

CHM 203: General Chemistry 1An introduction to chemical science, its development, basic concepts and interrelationships with other sciences. Intended primarily for non-science majors and B.A. degree candidates.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

CHM 204: General Chemistry IIAn introduction to chemical science, its development, basic concepts and interrelationships with other sciences. Intended primarily for non-science majors and B.A. degree candidates.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: CHM 203.

CJ 200: Introduction to Criminal JusticeThis survey course examines the various components of the criminal justice system, including law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Students will be introduced to various criminal justice agencies and career possibilities.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

Eng 101: English Composition IIntroduction to academic writing with emphasis on writing as a multi-stage process, critical thinking, and fundamental research strategies and skills.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: ACT 18 or SAT 450 or COM 095.

Eng 102: English Composition IIIntroduction to academic writing with emphasis on writing as a multi-stage process, critical thinking, and fundamental research strategies and skills.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: ACT 18 or SAT 450 or COM 095; ENG 101.

GEO 100: Intro to Cultural GeographyIntroduces the basic concepts, ideas, and processes of human geography by examining the historical and contemporary patterns and processes that are shaping our world. College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

HS 220: Personal Health A survey course that focuses upon wellness promotion and prevention of various health problems.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

HST 103: The World Since 1850Major world developments and trends from the 19th century to the present and their implications for the future. College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

IST 160: Intro to ProgrammingIntroduces students to visual programming methods. College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

IST 163: Programming PracticumConcepts of software development and maintenance using C++, including syntax of the language, loops, functions, pointers, decision structures, and file processing.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

IST 264: Hardware TechnologyAnalysis and examination of various hardware technology issues that impact computer usage. College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

MTH 121: Concepts and Applications*A course for non-science majors that develops quantitative reasoning skills. Topics include logical thinking, problem solving, linear modeling, beginning statistics and probability, exponential and logarithmic modeling, financial and geometry concepts.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: ACT 19 or SAT 460 or MAT 097 or Plac 100 or MAT 097E or MAT 095.

Math 123: Selected Topics College AlgebraSolve equations and inequalities, solve systems of linear equations, study of functions (including exponential and logarithmic functions), matrices, basic probability and statistics. Applications mostly in business and economics.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: ACT 19 or SAT 460 or MAT 097 or Plac 100.

MTH 130 College AlgebraPolynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Graphs, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences.College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: ACT 21 or SAT 500.

MTH 225: Introductory StatisticsBasic probability, descriptive statistics, fundamental statistical inference procedures involving estimation and hypothesis testing for a variety of situations with wide applications. College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: ACT 21 or SAT 500 or MTH 121 or MTH 123 or MTH 127 or MTH 130E or MTH 122 or MTH 130.

PSY 201: General PsychologyPrinciples and methods in the scientific study of behavior. College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

SOC 200: Introductory Sociology Introduction to the study of human society. College Credit: 3 hrs. Prerequisites: None.

Registration deadline for New students: One week prior to class start date.

Registration deadline for Admitted Students: Friday before classes begin.

Fall Term: Begins September 8, 2008.Except for CJ 200 and HST 103, which begin August 25.

All paperwork and tuition must be received by deadline dates.

*If you have previously taken a dual credit course, you are already admitted to Marshall University.

Computer Requirements:Each Computer that you use to access your Blackboard course must have the correct settings in Internet Explorer and the necessary hardware/software. To make sure your web browser is compatible with Blackboard, please visit the Marshall University OCCHS website (http://www.marshall.edu/occhs) and click on the Tech Requirements link under Online Tools.

JuniOr anD SEniOr YEar Of HigH SCHOOlBe currently enrolled in high school or an approved home-school program.Completed admissions application and application fee.High School transcript reflecting a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0.One letter of recommendation from a counselor or principal.To take Math courses, a student must have a qualifying ACT/SAT score in the subject area - an ACT of 19 or SAT of 460 (Math). Some Math courses may require a higher ACT/SAT score. To take English courses, a student must have an ACT score of 18 or SAT score of 450 in English.
