Ensuring consistency of auditing skills is crucial in monitoring the compliance of management systems

Organisations around the world, as well as their stakeholders, are becoming increasingly aware of the costs associated with failing to comply with legislative and regulatory requirements. Organisations are subject to greater scrutiny of their compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements by their various stakeholders.

The perception of an organisation’s compliance performance can influence:

• its reputation • its ability to attract and retain workers and/or members,

customers, clients or users • the maintenance of employees’ morale, commitment and

productivity • the view of investors, donors, sponsors and the financial

community, and • its relationship with companies, governments, the media,

suppliers, peers, customers and the community in which it operates

The role of the auditor in monitoring the compliance of environmental management systems is crucial and organisations are increasingly aware of the need to ensure:

• consistency of performance from auditors • auditors have an advanced understanding of the principles

of auditing and best practice audit methodologies• auditors have advanced knowledge of the Standards which

apply to environmental management systems and the legal and regulatory framework in which the organisation must operate

SAI Global’s online course covers the skills and knowledge required to be an effective Environmental Management Systems Auditor

Underlying the development of this course are several themes;

• a commitment to developing training programs that can have a positive impact on an organisation, its stakeholders and society in general

• a commitment to supporting compliance and certification of an organisation’s management systems through quality training products

• an understanding that organisations rely on employees to implement and support their management systems

• an understanding that one person’s actions or behaviour can influence others and have a significant impact on the achievement of compliance objectives

• a commitment to competency based training and assessment that supports the application of skills and knowledge in the workplace

The Online Auditing Environmental Management Systems training course has been built to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills for auditing management systems in accordance with the guidelines outlined in ISO 14001.

This course focuses not only on the core auditing skills but also on communication and reporting skills which can help the Lead Auditor achieve success in the audit. This course uses a scenario-based approach to explain the complexities of a risk-based environmental management systems audit.

The online learning course is appropriate for learners if they are potential or practising auditors who lead and/or perform environmental management systems audits.

The course clearly defines the learning objectives mapping to the relevant competencies at multiple levels, including the course, module and lesson levels

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

• explain what an EMS is and why organisations implement an EMS

• describe the approach used to conduct risk-based audits

• explain how identified risks are used to determine the duration and expertise required for an EMS Audit

• determine the operational controls and procedures required to manage environmental risks

• explain the intent and specific requirements of each clause of the AS/NZS ISO 14001 Standard

• conduct an audit of an organisation against the requirements defined in the AS/NZS ISO 14001 Standard

• identify the key factors and types of evidence that confirm that an organisation’s EMS is effective

The course learning strategy recognises that adults learn best when training is practical and focused

The online learning course follows the disciplines of Knowles’ theory of adult learning (Androgogy) that specifies that adults learn best when training is practical and focused. Knowles’ theory also states that adults approach a task as problem solving, which can be effectively presented by scenarios and inductive questions. This course uses this method to ensure that the training is effective, interesting and useful.

The training applies the following levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy:

• Knowledge • Comprehension • Application

The flow of content, graphics, and high-level interactivities will engage the learner in an immersive learning experience that will facilitate easy assimilation of content, and enhance retention of concepts.

Self directed learning allows for time to reflect and develop a deeper understanding of the material

This online course is structured so that participants can work as an independent learner at their own pace, in their own environment, utilising the given resources. The online environment is as action-packed as a classroom environment usually is. The interactivities are strategically placed to give learners immediate feedback on their progress. Learning at their own pace, with time to reflect upon their learning, they will develop a deep understanding of the material, leading to application of concepts and reinforcement of knowledge.

The case study approach helps to convey complex theoretical concepts in a simple and immersive way

The course presents the learning through an engaging and sophisticated case study that is woven through all modules. This case study is a generic one, using the example of a risk-based environmental audit.

In the case study, an imaginary Lead Auditor is shown initiating, conducting and evaluating an environmental audit systematically, as per the guidelines outlined in ISO 14001:2004 Standard. The course follows her and her team as they go about engaging in discussions with the audit client and auditee, planning for the audit, using various tools to gather and analyse audit findings and then present them to the audit client and auditee. It also follows them in their post-audit activities.

The case study method helps to convey complex theoretical concepts in a simple way. It allows learners to reflect on their own situation in the context of others’ experiences and understand complex situations. This exercise sharpens the learners’ analytical and diagnostic skills and exposes them to new situations, thus facilitating the creation of new knowledge through reflection, analysis and synthesis.
