OLYMPUS STEREOSCOPIC ZOOM MICROSCOPE MODEL SZ-Ill

The model SZ-Ill is .an advanced model of SZ which was a revolut-

ionary product which adopted the zooming ma~nificotion mechanism, for

the first time in the world in a stereoscopic microscope,. rapidly expanding

its range of utilization such as in the classification of plants, anatomy

of animals, or in assembly and inspection of modern electronic products

and precision instruments.

No outfocusing effect will be experienced and any desired magnifica-

tion can be obtained within the area of the xoom ratio 5.7. Further,

there is no "image fade away" when changing magnifications as in the

case of any former microscope.

Doubtlessly this will greatly increase the working efficiency. A set

of Model SZ-Ill is completely equipped with accessories assuring its versatile

utilization. This may be called the definitive product of stereoscopic

microscopes.

OPTICAL SYSTEM s

The objective, ocular and varif'cal lens systems are arranged aa shown above. The beams from speci- mtn prooaad into the Objective "Ob" with an angle of visual axes of g040', wherein they are turned parallel to each other. They further proceed through the morning vrriatibn system " ZL1 and ZL2" and the fixed lens- " L1 ", reaching the Prism P1 " where they again assume a 12' angle of visual axes and 45' inclination. Then the beams enter porro-prisms "P2" and finally reach the eyepieces or Oculars " Oc ". Continuous morning variation is performed by movement of the ZL lenses.

ZOOMING VARIATION LENS SYSTEM :

This system is composed of 2 sets of lenses placed and operated parallel, each set consisting of 2 groups of varifocal lenses. The change of magnifications is performed by zooming these group of lenstr and changing the focal length of the objective. In case of the magnification change from a low number to a higher one, the lower lens group (1st tens group) rises to the middle and then comes down. The upper lens group (2nd lens group) is lo\vered stright down. The magnification ratio for the zooming system is 5.7 With the use of an objective 1 x , i t varies from 0.75 x to 3 x . The following illustration indicates positions of lenses in different cases of magnifications.

Spacial Obejtive lenses have been designed for the exclusive use with SZ. The standard set includes a 1 x objective. This I x objective is built in the microscope body and cannot be removed. 0.75 x and 1.5 x objectives are also available as spbcsal acccwrim. Sina the 1 x objective is already fixed in the body other objectives, if used, must be attachad under the 1 x objective.

BODY :

This is the maill part of the rnicrcwrcope inchding a built-in objactivc and the zooming variation mechanism, and is attached to the pillar by a coupling ring. When the magnification r i n ~ is turned, zooming movement of vary-focal lenses in the inside give a continuous flow of magnifications. Each scale on the magnification indicator ring shows that its rotation by one graduation means the change of total magnification by 0.1 X . The body can be rotated through 360° in the frame of the body coupling ring, thus enabling the user to freely choose whatever position he desires.

HEAD :

The head is designed with an inclinaton of 45' to the horizontal and a 12' angle of visual a x n to allow the user to rnaintgin a comfortable posture and avoid fatigues during a prolongad abservation. This also facilitates smooth coincidence of the two images (right and left) into one. The range of interpupillary distance adjustment, using eyepieces GlOx, .is 46-74 mm. Therefore, you can adjust it to your own by turning the ocular tubes. Eye-refraction difference will be adjust& by focusing correctly on the specimen through the right eyepiece and then turning the diopter ring to focus the left eyepiece.

Inter-Pupillary Distance Adjustment

FOCUSING MECHANISM :

Focusing is performed by: (1) Sliding the body on the pillar until rough focus is attained and (2) making fine adjustment by the focusing knob. The range of movement by the focusing knob is 55mm (up and down).

STAND a

The stand is composed of a stage and a pilIar. The stage is designed to asaure complete stability of the body mounted at the top of the pillar in whatever position it may be. The stage plate is mounted in the circular rtceptacle of the stagt which is poeitioned to fit the eyepiece viewfield. The stage plates arc interchangeable ac- cording to the method of okwations employed. Whichever plate (clear or m k t d ) may be user], it must be firmly fixed to the stage by the p~vid&i screw. The pillar holds the microscope body and moves 47mm vertically against the st* and r ~ t a t a through 75' to right and left. The inner tube of the pillar, assisted by the built-in balancing spring, firmly holds the body and the coupling plate, slides up and down in the outer tube, and can be stabilized at a desired position by the pillar clamping screw.

ASSEMBLY AND OBSERVATION :

Pstts of the micmcmpe taka out of the cabinet will be assembled in the following d r :

Order of Assembly : 1. Set the focusing part onto the body supporting block and secure it tightly by the

providad scrcw. 2. The coupling ring with the micmampc will be only slightly tightened and the

body must be firmly affixed by the providad s c m . 3. Place a stage plate into the receptacle and fasten it by the clamping screw. 4. Sct the stage clip. 5. R c m m the eyepiece caps from the binocular tube and place eyepieces into a p

@tc position. There are two methods of obaewations-by rdccted light and by trans-illumination. In case of the latter, the s+l accssory (the base and the illuminating equipment) wilI be u d .

Order of Okrvation : According to the type of the observation, the pPoptr stage plate must be ud-the

clear gl= for tnnc~lluminated observation and the smoked glass for reflected light. ' HOW- ever, even in the ear# of the reflected light, if the specimen is in white or in bright colon, YOU may darken the view field by placing a piace of black board or p p r underneath the clear stage plate, so as to give a contrast.

PARFOCALITY ADJUSTMENTS :

The Olympus Model SZ-I11 is designed to de ~ar foeaI in both right and left eyepieces on all magnification settings at the standard distance of distinct vision (250 mm). However, each person has a different distance of distinct vision from the other. TO obtain satisfactory parfocality with the Model SZ-111, follow the below described procedures when focusing the image of specimen.

(1) Set the both (right and left) diopter rings at '0'. (2) Set the magnification drum at '4'. (3) Focus the image by means of the focusing knob. (4) Set the magnification drum at '0.7'. (5) If the image is out of focus, perform focusing by adjusting the diopter ring(s)

...... right or left, or both, as required. DO NOT perform focus adjustment with the focusing knob.

(6) Once again set the magnification drum at '4'. If the imagc is still out of focus, adjust the diopter ring(s) (right or left, or both) to bring the image in focus. DO NOT perform focus adjustment with the focusing knob.

(7) Now your Model SZ-I11 has been adjusted to be parfacal at your own distance of distinct vision. Hence, re-adjustment of microscope when you switch from one magnification to the other is not necessary.
