For the third year in a row, I was invited to speak to one of the

many Snow Bird clubs in our area. The members of these clubs, almost all seniors, leave their snow country homes and spend three to four months here in northwest Florida. They have planned activities; many and varied social events and monthly meetings with guest speakers.

I was one of two speakers they had invited for this meeting and prepared, what I thought, was an interesting discussion about the economic impact they have on our area. The speakers then answer questions from the members present at the meeting.

My questions had to do with financial matters. The 300-plus attendees seemed to be pleased with my speech and appreciate and enjoy the question-and-answer session.

Then the second speaker stepped up to the podium and the Snow Birds enjoyed his presentation much more than mine. Instead of a serious talk, he provided a philosophical and entertaining speech. No one asked me for a copy of my offering, but many of the members asked him for copies of his talk. It was simple, humorous and much more interesting than my talk.

I confess that I enjoyed his presentation more than mine and asked for a copy that, with his permission, I will share

with you. He told me he’d actually heard it several months ago and repeated it for the Snow Birds. As the saying goes, “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.”

If you scour the Internet, the “Six Little Stories” can easily be found as they are very popular. Here are the six short philosophical messages:

1. Once, all the villagers decided to pray for rain. They gathered the next day to pray, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH.

2. When you toss a baby in the air, the baby laughs because he or she knows you will catch

him or her. That’s TRUST.3. Every night we go to bed without any assurance we

will be alive the next morning, but still we set the alarm to wake up. That’s HOPE.

4. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That’s CONFIDENCE.

5. We see the world suffering, but we still get married and have children. That’s LOVE.

6. On an old man’s shirt was written, “I am not 80 years old … I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.” That’s ATTITUDE.

Have a happy day and live your life like these six stories!

Hope to see you in class soon.

SPANISH SCHOLAR PROGRAMPromises a New Approach to the Language Learning Experience

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Beginning this summer, we will offer a brand-new four-part curriculum designed to introduce students to the Spanish language. The first of four “Spanish is Fun” courses will be taught by Nancy DeLisle-Brown.

“Nancy is a fantastic Spanish teacher for our OLLI students,” said Michelle Girage, Assistant Dean. “She loves what she does and it shows. She makes learning a new language fun.”

DeLisle-Brown is a longtime instructor at the College of Continuing and Professional Education. She specializes in English as a second language, leading classes for local adult learners. She holds a master’s degree in Spanish from Salamanca University in Spain and was most recently named the 2015 Outstanding Adult Educator by the Georgia Adult Education Association.

OLLI’s “Spanish is Fun: Part I” will offer an interactive learning environment, including a wide variety of learning activities to interact in partner and group settings. Each class in the program will consist of 12 students or less. The small-class approach of the “Spanish is

Page 5: OLLI Courses July - September 2016

Fun” curriculum promises to increase motivation, improve learning outcomes and create a more enjoyable learning environment.

“My goal is to help my students develop enough confidence in themselves to speak not only in the classroom, but also outside of the classroom, in the community – when there is an opportunity,” DeLisle-Brown said.

The class will provide students with

a basic understanding of the Spanish language. Students will acquire basic language skills and the beginning vocabulary skills needed to engage in simple greetings and introductions. Upon completion of the course, students will have a basic understanding of:• Words that are similar in English and

Spanish. • Masculine versus feminine nouns.• Singular and plural personal nouns. • Specific components of Spanish

culture.“This will be a great adventure.

Along the way they may encounter difficulties and challenges, but at the end of my class they will hopefully have the skills necessary to engage in a new conversation,” DeLisle-Brown said. “As a non-native speaker, I will be able to share my own experience with learning the language and relate to the challenges and difficulties that students may face when learning the language. Studying

the Spanish culture will allow a further understanding of the language and bring about a greater appreciation for it.”

The “Spanish is Fun” program can be completed in one year; however, students will have the flexibility in choosing when to begin each part of the course. Upon completing the four parts of the “Spanish is Fun” curriculum, students will be awarded an OLLI Spanish Scholar Certificate.

“The certificate program is for anyone interested in introductory level Spanish, those planning to travel to Spanish speaking countries and those wishing to communicate with neighbors in the community,” Girage said.

OLLI’s “Spanish is Fun: Part I” begins on Monday, July 11 and runs for 10 consecutive Mondays. The cost is $159, and class time is from 10am – 12pm. Space is limited. For more information, visit ccpe.kennesaw.edu or call 470-578-6765.

The Labyrinth - A Walking MeditationThe labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection.
